  • Very good, but... where is the blues?

  • no wonder there are asian subtitles...

  • do not watch a single paul gilbert video if you want to or play guitar...it will just demoralize you

  • "The metric system......that's right, you're a smart motherfucker."

  • Does anyone know if this is from one of his instructional videos, and if so, which it is?

  • @jeffnelson23 It's called "Guitars from Mars"

  • @AchaGuitarMan Thanks a ton bro!! Much appreciated!

  • I just threw all my guitars in the garbage after watching this. :)

  • the guy's too damn good. guess i'll just stick to my johnny winter & freddy king type licks...lol.

  • Lol, I opened another video while he played, and it fit perfectly.

  • I want a PGM Iceman!!

  • This guy is inhuman. I wish they would've showed more of his picking hand as well.

  • at 1:00 when he says "a little bit slower", he actually makes the guitar sound sounds like its teasing us, and it knows that we never really will be able to play like him..

  • That pattern he does right at 2:00, does anyone have that tabbed? I've heard him do it a million times before, and it sounds so fucking great.

  • @LTDGuitars420 i totally want that exact pattern also....at 2:00

  • @skidrowsux1977 Same pattern Slash uses for his blues, want my vids if you like those kinad licks :)

  • Goddamn you Paul!!! This is so great!

  • cool, some nice concepts

  • Guitars for sale..

  • One thing about Blues and Jazz is they can flow very well together. To see this in action, listen to players who really fit into neither yet incorporate both into their play. Here is a good listening guide Brad Paisley Chet Atkins Steve Wariner James Burton Les Paul David Gilmour Merle Travis Al DiMeola Yingwe Malmsteen Randy Rhodes Django Reinhardt Marty Friedman Joe Satriani Steve Vai Allan Holdsworth Keith Urban There are more players (especially in World Music Genres) to hear as well.
  • @vengenceownsyourass -You left out one very important player who is very good at fusing jazz and blues. One of my ultimate favorites, Larry Carlton. I know you wrote there are more players, but i wanted to post it just in case anyone is interested.

  • @fingerstylefan I had completely thought to mention him. Thanks!!!

  • I love playing up and down scales in 3rd's it makes it sound like a solo already

  • @newcott31 It will sound like an exercise if you do it all the time. :P

  • @PiotrLatoMusic That's the thing, I don't play it all the time :)

  • I LOVE IT!!!!!!!

  • Shawn Lane...done.

  • ....and you people don't think this is buckethead?

  • @o15523 paul gilbert was bucketheads teacher for many years, hence why you can hear certain similarities within their playing :)

  • What DVD is this from??? I want to buy it.

  • @jeffmach993 i want to download it

  • @jeffmach993 This is from "Guitars from Mars" which, unfortunately for us, was produced only in Japan. Even if you can find the DVD it likely won't be viewable on your player because the Japanese productions are in a different format and not viewable on most American DVD equipment.

  • I sure am glad they are translating this video teaching into Chinese

there are so many Chinese guitar players out there ....hehe

  • nice Iceman

  • Anybody know the source of this clip?

  • The playing takes time to develop however the theory really isnt as complicated as it sounds, you just have to become familiar with the terminology. Between any octave say A to A, there are only twelve notes and each note has a term ie.. root, minor 2nd (flat 9), major 2nd (9) etc up to twelve notes. He is basically using all the notes that are not commonly used within a five note pentatonic scale, which helps give it the exotic sound :-)

  • @TheTom5150 he is adding notes into the scale that are not part of it

  • @ex3vious Right, the term is chromatic for an added note that isnt normally a part of a particular scale. Now depending on where the added note is in relation to the root determines what you would call the chromatic note, ie a whole step above the root is a 9th (2nd) a whole step below would be a minor 7th. My point from the previous post bein there are twelve notes between each octave and each note has a name

  • OMG,,,, his coordination is impeccable!

  • Allen Coates/Broken man........First youtube video. Its pretty good, check it out! Thanks!

  • this is about as bluesy as my crack. I'm not saying it's not good playing, it's just not blues. Not even a little bit.

  • @verbw002 i've seen like 3 videos with this same title, which have NOTHING to do with blues

  • @jeropage95 Seems like peope need to be reminded of what real Bluues is.

  • @verbw002 he never said it was blues

    it's a BLUES SCALE

he is a rock guitarist --rock musicians also use blues scales

  • @ruthietreselan It's not a blues scale. I'm a blues player. I've watched A LOT of blues players. I've never played that and I've never seen one play that. Why? Because it's not a blues scale.

  • @verbw002 seriously? you're fretting over a technicality...I'm sure you are a blues player, but there is no fucking way you even come close paul gilbert. As far as i'm concerned, he can call the scale whatever he bloody well likes. Keep practicing and then be pedantic when you don't just sound envious

  • @whata57 Funny thing is, I don't care that I can't absolutely shred a straight pentatonic scale. I'm perfectly happy with my playing and the fact that I can put some real soul into my music. I'm not saying that Paul can't, I've not listened to him enough to be able to say that, I'm just talking about this video.

  • love his tone!!!! laney and ibanez?

  • Someone accidentally hit dislike

  • damn paul.

  • i love how the only subtitled word that is understandable is 'cool.' Also, it must be nice to have one index finger, and three middle fingers.

  • his pinky is like the ring in the lord of the rings.. he can kill everyone with his pinky.

  • (incredible shred) "yah so now you got it"....yah I got it -___-

  • fuck you paul just fuck you -.-

  • isnt that just the natural minor scale? i'm sure it is

  • @Ben0itZ no it isn't

  • @MrBadAssBoy123 ok then what is it?

  • @Ben0itZ some custom scale or something... the a minor scale contains the notes a,b,c,d,e,f,g,a... simple as that

  • its like a thunder pinkie O.o

  • Comment removed

  • i just typed for porn and Paul gilbert came out >.>

  • I don't understand a thing he said.......... T_T

  • @TheSynyster94 It's something like, "I'm really good and have all sorts of cool tricks and licks that you will never be able to play" followed by "Why are you still watching? You're brain must be fried".

  • @TheSynyster94 read the subtitles then

  • @TheSynyster94 That's why there are subtitles xD

  • @TheSynyster94 Yeah...he's one of those guys who is so schooled on musical theory and song writing that almost nobody can understand it. He's just too good for his own good.

  • Paul = shred

  • tab please?

  • paul you are an awsome player!!! thanks

  • "get a drummer." Lol

  • Fuck I love Paul Gilbert. And he ain't Buckethead you children. I like Buckethead too but Paul's playing is more tasteful. And well, better.

  • @ElJucifer I wouldn't say Paul Gilbert's style is more tasteful than Bucket's. Paul definitely comes up with more and better licks but Bucket's superior phrasing is beyond comparison outside of the Marty Friedman. Paul is more accessible, that's probably the better word when differentiating the two.

  • @Vaizorg If you're talking an album like electric tears or colma then yeah, cool, buckethead has some fucking cracking stuff, amazing melodies and note choice. But when he shreds, no, he's fast and thats really it. He plays afew awesome licks then descends into nonsense, and im saying this as a fan. So yes, when he plays tasteful, songs like lone sal bug, hills of eternity, padmasana, he is genius, when he plays fast, its all style no substance. Whereas Paul does both well.

  • @ElJucifer Yes, exactly, although that's not to say sometimes it doesn't work in his favor, when he's able to perfectly blend melody and nonsense, like in the live version of Welcome to Bucketheadland (you know which one I'm talking about) it's absolutely amazing. But it does get old, I agree. I'm also constantly in awe of Bucket's picking style, which does SO MUCH work while still looking loose and effortless.

  • Fucking Awsome!!!!!!!!!

  • These licks woke me up ..Just about to connect my guitar ..!!

  • some of this reminds me f marty friedman a little

  • He has the same gangly fingers and physique as Buckethead. Does anyone know how tall he is?

  • @William1st About 6'4.

  • @54321seb How tall is Buckethead? I know the theory of these two being the same person has been dismissed, but they're both really tall, absolutely SHRED, and there's no pictures of Buckethead anywhere. I can't believe in this day and age, with all the technology out there, that there's no pictures of Buckehead anywhere! It's so mysterious!! Oh yeah, same hair too.

  • @William1st He's not Buckethead. Seriously. And the hair thing? Nothing like each other.

  • @William1st theres also no videos or pictures of paul and bucket head playing together! since they are such good friends apparently, and paul taught buckethead you would think they would jam. weird huh.

  • @William1st There's pictures. His name is Brian Carrol. Look it up.

  • @William1st ... there actually are a couple of pictures of buckethead... and they are in no way the same person. Paul gave lessons to Brian though back in the day.. anyways other proof is that they tour at the same time and play shows on teh same day... if you can think of any other logical proof then you must really be superstitious but their playing style is extremely different as well

  • Didn't he teach Buckethead long ago?

  • @William1st He IS Buckethead

    My theory, anyways.

  • @Valcarion

that theory has been disproven a LONG time ago. his fingers are different size (paul's pinky is longer), they have been at different places at different times which is proof enough that they aren't the same person, their style is COMPLETELY different other than buckethead abusing that paul gilbert lick, their height is different, and there is a video of buckethead unmasked and he is NOT paul gilbert.

  • @GoodMetalFTW Huh. Good to know, I guess. Doesn't matter really. 2 badass guitar players. Couldn't care less exactly who is who. I just like the music, and learn from the technique.

  • @Valcarion

yeah, i just don't like it when people say paul is buckethead.

  • @GoodMetalFTW did you know that buckethead was a student for paul?

  • @Nakkinaam4

of course. i think every long time fan knows that buckethead was a student of his. what most people don't know is that buckethead's main teacher is actually pebber brown. he is a phenomenal guitar teacher and he has a channel on youtube with lessons and the likes. check him out if you haven't already.

  • @GoodMetalFTW actually i havent even heard of him, thanks for the tip.

  • @Valcarion Fuck, good point. I've never realised the possibility!

  • at 4:50 he says. "jazzy fusiony spacy sound".

  • This taught me nothing except how lame I am at guitar. I'm just gonna leave the shredding to Mr. Gilbert. Rock on, Paul!!!

  • damnet! wheres the fuken demonstration!

  • 6:14, Cowboys from Hell solo!

  • vibrato

  • any chance of getting the tabs for this lesson?....plaaaeeease!!!

  • damn, why didnt I think of that?

  • @MyManDan Don't answer that

  • @parafleet he incorporated EVERY note... (the "wrong" note is the flat-5)

  • He should incorporate the "wrong" note. That is important to blues passion.

  • Shit !!! Wow !! Killer lesson !!!

  • :O

  • Bloody hell he's good! And his tone is excellent.

  • dam the sustain of that ibanez is sick!!!

  • paul is the best teacher and my favorite technical guitar player for teaching. i like dimes crazy style and heaviness. i play low tuned dropped d and ive used some of pauls techniques which fit the way i play very well at 26 years of playing. man i wish i could play as fluent as him though.

  • alot of notes for alot of badass personality

  • this sound just like slash......

    well .....

a very, very fast slash XD!!!!!

  • WHAT DVD IS THIS?

  • Blues and metal is a good combination

  • The part with the string skipping lick was beast, it sounds so cool.

  • he fucked up this is not paul gilbert he never makes mistakes

  • this is not blues..

  • @npgm1 I don't know how you can say this isn't blues.... oh maybe you don't know anything about music. MY BAD. It may not be Albert Collins or BB King, but he's obviously playing rock/blues idioms in his Paul Gilbert-ish way.

  • @npgm1 and imglad

  • BADASS !

  • I just stumbled upon Paul a few weeks ago even though I've been playing guitar for a while. Great stuff he is passing along.

  • what dvd is this from?

  • I never get tired of seeing this clip or paul teaching.

  • amazing

  • its like showing how to play guitar like slash.happy to find it.

  • this man is so generous.. if i knew all these licks i would keep them all for meeee muahahahahahah

  • Yeah!!

  • is there tabs of this????

  • PG has a squid finger.....

  • Smooooth MoFo!

  • Paul is remarkable in his fluid, down to earth teaching style. Might be the best ever. Genious stuff.....

  • @bogattus Well said. I agree 100%.

  • Woo for passing tones!!

  • What i'd do to be taught by Paul Gilbert

  • that is the sickest fucking blues lick ive ever heard
