  • I saw them play my high school in grade 10 which would have been 1986. They smoked weed in the boy's lockeroom and were never invited back. Most students hated them, I thought they were great. Did some Howlin' Wolf , Doors, Stones....

  • The least popular band I've ever seen and the best damn show I'll ever see

  • "It evaporates"...love Gordie!

    Gord you are awesome!

  • "It evaporates"...love Gordie!

  • gord gord gord

  • I got the chance to see the Hip at really small venue in Austin, Texas called stubs BBQ back in the late 90s. Still one of the best shows I have ever seen.

  • i vow to boycott KFC until they pull their ads from youtube... along with any other company that makes me watch a mini advert before a video on a social media site.

  • I said "I will blow you if you fix this guitar problem," and he did so... *cough* anyway.

  • at what point does gord start talking about his experience on SNL?

  • Joe Chithalen.

  • i love this interview

  • does gord downie say he would "blow his guitar tech at 6:03

  • Canadian music is so underrated. I like The Tragically Hip, Rush and The Guess Who, but I gotta say that April Wine is my favorite Canadian band by far.

  • 38 minutes into this - Thank you for saying that. As an expat Canadian I cringe at the worst of the national 'pride' and the provincial attitudes when I witness them. Here, I meet old Gozitans who wax poetic about their decades in Canada (60s to the 80s). That Canada is gone, if it ever even really existed.

  • God Bless Gord!!!

  • sometimes i wonder how contrived both offerings and responses are in forums like these. after all, with 20 - 30 years invested in the business, you've heard it all... you've been asked it all... surely you're well prepared and are able to have your words at the ready. it just seems so formulaic to me at times.... and above and beyond what, i think, the common man'sability to answer similar questions would be.

  • Gord's a dancer.

  • canada oh tragic and hip this is your music

  • great stuff from gord but that interviewer is such a piece of shit lol will not stfu

  • Comment removed

  • go gord!!! go hip!!!

  • TTH - Best Band From Canada - EVER ! Same 5 guys since 8th grade. Truly unique, truly talented, truly the best.

  • All you can ask is careful consideration.......great quote.

  • Whatta babe...

  • Jian keeps taking this interview back to the 1990's and insisting on doing this in a chronological style. How about questions about ANYTHING that they've done in the past 10 years?? I'm surprised Gord doesn't get fed up with this line of questioning. How well do you remember what you did 18 years ago, how much does that reflect who you are now? Jian looks down and drones on with "In 1996 you release... blah blah blah" like Gord's on trial or something. Zzzzzz.

  • Good intro Jian, couldn't have said it better myself..

  • Great show --if only the ego maniac who runs the show would shut up a wee bit more and let his guest speak :-P

  • mmmmmm, yeah, mmmmm, yeah-UNEDITED interview-great stuff-mmmm, yeah

  • This is a great interview, and Good Quality video too! I am going to see Gord live at a festival in Salmon Arm BC this summer, really looking forward to it!

  • love the interview, LOVE Gord, love the CBC, but wtf look how old that Laptop is!

  • lol. soups getting cold...

  • aaaaah, that's a great anecdote about the SNL show! Man! I thought that was a conscious choice to say "Tragically Hip" instead of "Fabulously Rich"...

  • Ah this is great. Jian and Gord.

  • Oh and BTW AW came from my neck of the woods and I saw thaem when I was in High School, they rocked then and did for a time when they could still fill stadiums. That era was however short compared to how long the HIP have been filling arenas in Canada.

  • The discussion of greatest ever is a subjective conversation, the sort of thing that,s been going on for as long as people have had opinions. I do submit that the body of work and the longevity of the HIP is something that must be considered. It has been my OPINION that they are the best ever from Canada, because they have continued to evolve and have remained completely intact for such a long time. April Wine was great for a time and Rush never really strayed from a certain style. Go Hip

  • @pistolpedro122 yer buzzin', pistol. RUSH has chunks of bands like The Hip, in their stoole!!

RUSH is to The Hip, as a Red Barchetta is to a Kia.

    pllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllleze.

(just fuckin' with you, i like the hip, but this is the most painful interview i have EVER seen-ouch!!)

  • it's all opinion. the hip are my favorite canadian band, and favorite band in general, but i recognize that other people might not agree, a completely subjective matter

  • You can't compare A.W. and Rush to the Hip. Each is unique, and, especially after watching this, you can hardly say Downie or the rest of the band has ever tried copying the sound of another's work. It's ridiculous to compare things that are on a completely different plane

  • JayA, I concur. I was merely responding to the opinion that the Hip are the best Canandian band ever. As most likely most of the posters are under 35, they probably don't appreciate A.W. and their history. It's a shame they didn't make it bigger in the States. Very underrated.

  • epic introduction haha

  • we r the same got me thruogh rehab i listened to it every day, the exact feelin is the best

  • id love to see gord downie and quinton taurintino write somethhg

  • Two best writers on the face of the planet Gorde Downie and Eddie Vedder

  • Two of my favourite Canadian icons! One from Moxy Fruvous, the other from the Hip!

  • G's intro makes him look like a tool. Love the guy but all he had to say to introduce Gord Downie is that he's GORD DOWNIE nough said!

  • 52:10 his head fits perfectly into the Q

  • There's more worms that earth in the afterlife!

  • Greatest band ever! Gord is a master lyricist! Master musicians! No one is better! Period!

  • I would also like to point out that Gord Downie is a GENIUS. The band is the best group of talented men. LOVE THEM!

  • Best band EVER. I live in Kenmore, NY and have seen them 25 times. Saw them in Hamilton, Ontario twice and will be seeing them again in Salamanca. Woo-HOO!

  • And don't you wanna see how it ends!

  • I wish they had stuck to their old sound for We Are the Same, it was a disappointment to me. Oh well, still the best Canadian band to date!

  • 24:00 wow the hips first trip was to RENFREW!!

  • I love how at 54:03 Gord can't help but mention the BBT interview.... Made me laugh.... "News of rudeness travels fast, perhaps your acquainted with what I'm talking about"

  • story please?

  • Amazing.

    That fucking inspired me!

    time to do some 'damage'

  • "Kurt Cobain reincarnated sighs...and licks his face" -Don't Wake Daddy

  • I think children will be studying the Hip 200 years from now in school, amazing music and amazing Canadian ambassadors ..... Great interview

  • its hard being infront of the eye of the beast, watching your every move and every sound judging you against the wall.

you must know this is hard for gord being 50 and knowing how human his ideals are and seeing how his foundation for his life is based on a magical dollar, it must be hard, i have so much fuckin respect for this man, so humble, he knows this guy is just doing his job, and he's being honest as possible. long live hte message of gord downie. come back to london gord,

  • Oh Gordy baby....sigh!

  • And piss on all of yer background

And piss on all yer surroundings

    Courage, my word

  • It didn't come it doesn't matter...........

  • Courage......

  • your worrd

it didn't come it doesn't matter

    Courage

it couldn't come at a worse time

  • DAY FOR NIGHT.....

not and.... sorry, just bugged me.

  • Yaah bugged me too.

  • Great interview!

  • Epic.

  • Funny, I thought "we are the same" referred to people across this world. It didn't dawn on me that he was referring to the band 25 year's ago.

  • he said fuck this and fuck that

    And this guy's the diplomat

  • does he have handlers like most celebrities

  • Best Band Ever.

  • When I was young and naive I never paid much attention to The Hip, thinking they were old and outdated.

Now that I'm older and more mature, I've finally come to appreciate their songs and understand what the lyrics are all about. They've easily become one of my favorite bands. Ever.

  • same here man, I'm 20 I grew up listening to the hip in my dad's truck in the garage on the radio, I was never a huge fan but now that I'm older I consider them the greatest band in Canadian history.

  • really? bands like the tragically hip, our lady peace, matthew good band and the tea party have been in my house as long as i remember, one of the first songs i ever liked was bobcaygeon and poets.

  • You rock then, I agree 100%.

  • @RickyTomatoes Couldn't agree more. Young and dumb and thought The Hip were just a band my parents listened to, but they are truly an amazing band!

  • @RickyTomatoes - I saw them when I was 14, it was the second concert I ever went to. Wasn't really into them, like you I thought it was old people's music. But the older I get the more I appreciate it.

Oh snap, I think that means I'm getting old :P

  • @RickyTomatoes I'm 14 and I love em and really appreciate the lyrics and embrace the fact that they are Canadian legends.

  • you wanna see awesome ,then just watch the Blow at high Dough video...tell me the Hip aren't the best!?

  • Yes, one of the best indeed!

Something about their music brings back good, strong memories of my hometown (Toronto).

  • my favorite is blow at high dough along with

    -nautical disaster-greasy jungle-grace too-100 meridian-50 mission cap-lookin for a place to happen-courage-ahead by a century-love is a first-in view-new Orleans is sinking -38 years old-pigeon camera-little bones-twist my arm

    -and wheat kings

  • AS a musician. I appreciate this. Talking about yourself must be tough. Especially with people out there that like to take the shit out of you. That's what a lot of lonely insecure people do. I thought this was intelligent and interesting. If you watched the full hour and hated it, you are a lonely sod looking for happiness =)

  • Actually there is nothing pretentious about this at all. Just two smart people talking about an interesting topic. That's not pretentious. Pretentious is being niave enough to think writing this comment does anyone any good. If you don't like this, focus on other things please.

  • um, I'll focus on whatever I want, thanks.

smart is relative and interesting is definitely up for interpretation, and this interview is about as uninteresting as it gets FOR ME. and who knows what does anyone any good. you?

I get that ur upseting urself reading my comment...I hope u feel whatever there is for u to feel. :) can't heal it 'til u can feel it!

  • that was my comment/I was signed in under someone else's name.

    god bless (whatever god means).

  • You're absurd. Try to stir the pot as hard as you can bud, "whatever god means." You sound like an overachieving 15 year old.

  • other than Jian using the word "uber" there was nothing pretentious. I guess you don't like the hip. Thanks for letting us know. I for one was wondering your opinion, and now I can rest easy. cheers.

  • this is a long video but its awesome

  • Escape is at Hand for the Travelling Man, one of the lesser known, great Hip songs. On Phantom Power, really listen to it. Pretty moving.... for me.

  • It was our third time in New York

It was your fourth time in New York

  • Finally, Gord Downie has never really spoken so clearly about his career.

  • A lot of the credit for that goes to Ghomeshi - he knows what to ask and how to ask it...and then he takes time to really listen to the response.

  • great interview,

awesome he touched upon so much, The Rheostatics, The last of the unplucked gems, i love that song!

    CBC rocks!

  • "We don't do bad gigs, Jian."

  • Great interview Jian! Props Gord!

  • saw the Hip for the 1st time at riverfest-I was 10! Going to my 4th show in a few weeks in sunny Victoria. I wish I could tell them all how their music has seen me thru the trials of my life so far, been the soundtrack of my inspirations. Thanks you guys, and thanks for rockin the old tunes too! Meet me behind the arena for some BC hospitality!

  • Gord Downie is a wonderful human being!

And also, I have to comment on the exceptionally great quality of the video! The video quality seems new and improved! Thanks Q team for your awesome work! :)
