I saw them play my high school in grade 10 which would have been 1986. They smoked weed in the boy's lockeroom and were never invited back. Most students hated them, I thought they were great. Did some Howlin' Wolf , Doors, Stones....
I got the chance to see the Hip at really small venue in Austin, Texas called stubs BBQ back in the late 90s. Still one of the best shows I have ever seen.
i vow to boycott KFC until they pull their ads from youtube... along with any other company that makes me watch a mini advert before a video on a social media site.
Canadian music is so underrated. I like The Tragically Hip, Rush and The Guess Who, but I gotta say that April Wine is my favorite Canadian band by far.
38 minutes into this - Thank you for saying that. As an expat Canadian I cringe at the worst of the national 'pride' and the provincial attitudes when I witness them. Here, I meet old Gozitans who wax poetic about their decades in Canada (60s to the 80s). That Canada is gone, if it ever even really existed.
sometimes i wonder how contrived both offerings and responses are in forums like these. after all, with 20 - 30 years invested in the business, you've heard it all... you've been asked it all... surely you're well prepared and are able to have your words at the ready. it just seems so formulaic to me at times.... and above and beyond what, i think, the common man'sability to answer similar questions would be.
Jian keeps taking this interview back to the 1990's and insisting on doing this in a chronological style. How about questions about ANYTHING that they've done in the past 10 years?? I'm surprised Gord doesn't get fed up with this line of questioning. How well do you remember what you did 18 years ago, how much does that reflect who you are now? Jian looks down and drones on with "In 1996 you release... blah blah blah" like Gord's on trial or something. Zzzzzz.
This is a great interview, and Good Quality video too! I am going to see Gord live at a festival in Salmon Arm BC this summer, really looking forward to it!
aaaaah, that's a great anecdote about the SNL show! Man! I thought that was a conscious choice to say "Tragically Hip" instead of "Fabulously Rich"...
Oh and BTW AW came from my neck of the woods and I saw thaem when I was in High School, they rocked then and did for a time when they could still fill stadiums. That era was however short compared to how long the HIP have been filling arenas in Canada.
The discussion of greatest ever is a subjective conversation, the sort of thing that,s been going on for as long as people have had opinions. I do submit that the body of work and the longevity of the HIP is something that must be considered. It has been my OPINION that they are the best ever from Canada, because they have continued to evolve and have remained completely intact for such a long time. April Wine was great for a time and Rush never really strayed from a certain style. Go Hip
it's all opinion. the hip are my favorite canadian band, and favorite band in general, but i recognize that other people might not agree, a completely subjective matter
You can't compare A.W. and Rush to the Hip. Each is unique, and, especially after watching this, you can hardly say Downie or the rest of the band has ever tried copying the sound of another's work. It's ridiculous to compare things that are on a completely different plane
JayA, I concur. I was merely responding to the opinion that the Hip are the best Canandian band ever. As most likely most of the posters are under 35, they probably don't appreciate A.W. and their history. It's a shame they didn't make it bigger in the States. Very underrated.
Best band EVER. I live in Kenmore, NY and have seen them 25 times. Saw them in Hamilton, Ontario twice and will be seeing them again in Salamanca. Woo-HOO!
I love how at 54:03 Gord can't help but mention the BBT interview.... Made me laugh.... "News of rudeness travels fast, perhaps your acquainted with what I'm talking about"
its hard being infront of the eye of the beast, watching your every move and every sound judging you against the wall.
you must know this is hard for gord being 50 and knowing how human his ideals are and seeing how his foundation for his life is based on a magical dollar, it must be hard, i have so much fuckin respect for this man, so humble, he knows this guy is just doing his job, and he's being honest as possible. long live hte message of gord downie. come back to london gord,
When I was young and naive I never paid much attention to The Hip, thinking they were old and outdated.
Now that I'm older and more mature, I've finally come to appreciate their songs and understand what the lyrics are all about. They've easily become one of my favorite bands. Ever.
same here man, I'm 20 I grew up listening to the hip in my dad's truck in the garage on the radio, I was never a huge fan but now that I'm older I consider them the greatest band in Canadian history.
really? bands like the tragically hip, our lady peace, matthew good band and the tea party have been in my house as long as i remember, one of the first songs i ever liked was bobcaygeon and poets.
@RickyTomatoes - I saw them when I was 14, it was the second concert I ever went to. Wasn't really into them, like you I thought it was old people's music. But the older I get the more I appreciate it.
