Game needs more guys like Gibson these days. Can you imagine what he would have done to Ortiz or bonds if the did their little home run celebrations? The next at bat there would have been a good chance they were going into a vegetative state!
Back then pitchers used a different mentality. When you played with Bob, that day you knew it was a different deal with him on the mound. You were going to war that day. This is the way Reggie Smith described it. He actually is a much different man these days. He just had that how dare you step on this field and think you are going to beat us mentality. His bark is bigger than his bite. And I know for he is my uncle.
bob gibson was one tough sob. i am sure he is a nice guy off the field, but on the field he was a mean cuss. maybe it is the competitiveness, maybe its the intensity. but this is the same attitude that ty cobb and bill dickey took to the field. tough as nails, obliterate you and enjoy doing it style
Bob Gibson is great. One of my favorites books is his autobiography, "Stranger to the Game," which I have read about four times now. I remember him starting for the NL in the 1972 All Star game. Recently, I saw his 17-strikeout performance against the Tigers in the '69 Series (on MLB Network). Paraphrasing Pete Rose (referring to Brooks Robinson), Gibson belonged " to a higher league."
I'm still scared of Bob Gibson.

Look at all those guys sneaking inside thru the door to peek at the two greats in the studio! I bet they had some urgent business in there . . .

@Sugalean Your uncle was a great pitcher, but a major asshole.

@Sugalean He actually seems pretty congenial. It'd be cool to shake the hand of the fellow who posted a 1.12 era. Amazing stat!

Well, Gibson was an asshole, but I think Cobb belonged to an exclusive club of assholes

Correction. That was the '68 World Series. I just realized I wrote '69. Of course, the Mets won it in '69 against the Orioles.
