I use the default text in game, it does drop hits. Most notable was a hammer of wrath for the kill with no other damage going on. combat text showed 22k with 19 over kill. nothing on screen.

I don't know if you guys are doing this, but what works well is recording the audio on both ends (ie. Hengest records his voice, Towelliee records his), then afterwards you can overlay them, and have room to play with the audio levels, etc.
