Neil Shicoff in Werther ( Aix-En-Provence 1979)

A terrific, and under-appreciated, tenor. I heard him quite a bit in the '70s, then i understand he moved to Europe to avoid unfair, anti-male alimony rulings.

It is always, when all is said & done, that appreciation of an individual performance is a response very subjective in nature. Listening to Schiccff surpasses the subjective test, only

regret missing out on the available repertoire where he excels for too long, such a wonderful

voice, his Kuda Kuda is marvellous, this aria from Werther is a delight.

In any setting "Werther" not seen such amazing duet. Literally "sparks opens". Shicoff - the best Werther. Kaufmann - Koch inferior, in my opinion.

@tamusya06 Если бы их ещё и записывали...Увы!Вообще в инете есть информация о Шикоффе.Говорят,у него был нервный срыв после разрыва с женой.Поэтому в этот период он был очень нестабилен.Потом вернулся на оперную сцену.Вот,например Ромео 1982 года есть на ютуб

@DalilaCarmen Мюнхенская 1984-го года записана. Во всяком случае, на неё есть ссылки, в том числе американских сайтов по продаже дисков, но заказывать без какой-либо гарантии очень рискованно). YouTube, конечно, здорово, но полная съёмка живого спектакля - это несравнимо. Тем более, в случае Шикоффа.

ive worked next to shicoff, and you cannot imagine the deafening sound standing next to him. Incredible buzz!!

It was a greater voice in both quality and size than Bergonzi, not as much exquisite phrasing as the latter but not far behind. He too like Bergonzi made every note he sang count. He was the best tenor of the 80s.
