What is needed to play live with Guitar Rig. can I run it through a Marshall MG100HDFX Clean channel? What would I need to have in order to play live onstage?
@mettall1981 you wouldn't need the marshall. at the most basic, all you would need is a laptop and an audio interface that has a guitar input. you plug your guitar into the audio interface, which is connected to the laptop running guitar rig. Then you just connect the output of the audio interface into to the PA system
GR is great when it comes to convenience and portability, but I can't understand why a pro with access to the best gear would use this on stage! GR is without a doubt a great product, but if you were doing a professional live show, at the very least you'd want the best interface money could buy!?
When I'm doing a gig or rehearsal, I don't even consider taking my laptop instead of my Marshall.
@1giblesp I use a split signal - the other half runs through boutique pedals into a Swart SST ... however you can't create textures with that stuff, and that's something people want me to do!
air is amazing. guitar rig is amazing. music in general is amazing. and its never going to stop. no matter how bland music becomes, it will always be there. and there will always be pioneers.
i love that last little bit talking about the band and his joining the band. its great to see how an individual who's methods almost clash with the idea of the band's own methods actually work very well together. it just goes to show you it doesnt matter, digital or analog, its how you use it.
@BATTCIHY Yeah you have to use the laptop always with Guitar Rig. I use GR3 though and don't mind having the laptop. It's pretty helpful for making any slight changes on the fly and stuff. The only downfall is you either need a mac or a PC setup well that you know won't crash on you.
yeah, I totally agree, the new "Control Room" feature brings out so much detail, if you think that mics & mic modeling aren't important, just compare the two...NI rules the sonic world...
@TheBigAmbiguous no, the processing is done by the computer itself, the interface is just a bunch of buttons properly arranged, and can be substituted by a normal pc keyboard, but that wouldn't help that much haha
Long answer: You may be able to get the controller to work with something like the V-Studio or receptor, which are basically custom linux rigs with a built in VST host... But overall an actually reliable laptop tucked away like what is done in this video would probably be the best way to go.
Ha...all the Newbies to guitar rig....Welcome to the Pain of the Digital Guitar world - Latency I hate it! Only way to get it smooth & reliable is.....Money !!!
Research the specs on everything you plug into before you buy. Not only is Latency a problem....so is the Digital Frequencies you have to "EQ out" at loud gigging volumes, that is if you are as fussy as my ears are....I also hate
digital chips Mimicking a real amp because of this reason as well.
Can somebody please give me some help how the hell i get any kind of sound from guitar rig 3 with my midistart midicontroller? Is there any toturial? I'm a super noob with this...
hey everyone :) New to this, was interested in Guitar Rig, and I was wondering, with the help of guitar rig is there anyway I can emulate the tone in THIS video? /watch?v=y15C3HU0gas
It has a distortion, Phaser, Sound Gate and (most importantly) a specific rhythmic rap delay. I'm losing my effects pedal for a while and i want to be sure i can still play this song at shows, with the help of Guitar Rig :) ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPREICIATED.
Well, i have guitar rig 3 I bought it for my bass guitar and, to be honest playing with my laptop seriously fails, it's a bit better on my PC (it has a better soundcard). Probably if I had a really good and expensive soundcard it would sound cool... but then again... i'd rather get a new floor pod
Guitar rig is really good for practicing and modeling for a sound that you already have live. But I feel that it really fails short of a high quality amp.
Sure, it'll sound better than a fender front man or one of the old line 6 spiders, but have two good players shoot off with a really nice marshall or a real ac30 or a diezel or hell, even an orange versus guitar rig and its going to fall right on its face.
I just ordered Guitar Rig 4 Pro. I will use it along with my real rig. I think this is best - to get all full dynamics from the real gear and all the synth-like sounds from Guitar Rig. I will put an amp-selector on-stage and switch between the guitar rig and the real rig - sometimes can be used both.
I am so looking forward to combine this 2 worlds together ...
When I upload any song (Not my own) onto the tapedeck is sounds very distorted, fuzzy and I can't make out what I'm hearing. Is this normal or do I need a new sound card? Please help!
Silliest thing i've ever heard. Someone who knows what they're doing with Guitar Rig will sound better than someone who doesn't know what they're doing with a real amp.
There's plenty of evidence of that on Youtube.
I mean for my money, real gear is better, and there's no way I'd take a computer to a gig. But don't write Guitar Rig off at all; in the hands of someone who isn't useless, it's pretty great.
I was responding to the vague suggestion that your real rig sounds '20 times' better than Guitar Rig. In the hands of someone who knows their sound, it wouldn't really make much of a difference.
if you are with a band like Air that would mean a lot of bending down for manual editing the delay times or using like a lot of delay pedals set at different times or changing the modes non stop. Guitar Rig definitely does focus you on your guitar playing.
It has two stereo outputs that will go to pa - I have mine hooked up to the CD channel on my home cinema amp & can get all the panning effects & flangers & stereo fx in 6.1 surround sound - HEAVEN!. it can hook up to the amp too if you have a 2 phono > 1/4 jack lead. But you wont need the amp - this does it for you - u just need an output
Love the sounds you're getting out of this. The "Sexy Boy" sound makes me nostalgic. The latter had to be GR1 or GR2 though correct? So, non of the new amps?
I love what you guys at NI are doing, GR just keeps getting better. I love it. It's great for what it is. Anyway, keep up the great work NI and Steve.
can someone tell me how his output goes through? I got some tips from web that he splits input into L-keyboard/R-guitar but I can't figure out how he manages output. As far as I couldn't see any cabinet simulation on guitar rig panel he probably uses a realy cabinet to sound either guitar and keyboard (because keyboard signal goes through guitar rig) but I think keyboard wouldn't sound as good as he plays through guitar cabinet.
Hey showerlunar - Steve here... I split my guitar signal - one part into Guitar Rig, and the other into an amp. I then blended the sounds, using the amp for the dry and punchy signal, and quite wet sounds on Guitar Rig when I was using guitar. Same for the SH-101 - we took a direct signal and used Guitar RIg for certain effects, and it was blended out front. You're absolutely right - the SH-101 never went through the amp, and I didn't use cabinet models for any sounds that we used on the 101.
Yeah the B4 is a great softsynth, i can't get enough of it.
havn't tried out guitar rig yet, ive mainly been using ik multimedia's amplitube which is pretty good but doesnt seem to have all these neat features that guitar rig does so i might give guitar rig a go.
sorry for putting thumb down on your comment was an accident but why would you think gr2 is better than gr3 Native intruments obviously made gr3 superior
I don't know, to be honest. GR3 is a good piece of kit with some great effects but something about it rubs me up the wrong way. Some of the settings on it are far superior but I think my problem is simply how "digital" it sounds (which is why I've moved away from using Guitar Rig at all, tbh).
I have the same thing in my head - is grII warmer sounding? - I mean the RKIII has better DA converters so should be better.
I think it would be great if someone figured out how to link the midi buttons of two rig controls so 1 could be the sound card & the second ones switches could be used as extra controllers
I want a Guitar Rig!! It's amazing. Sometimes i listen to musicians lik Air and i wonder what kind of effects do they use? now i c! with regular pedals it's almost impossible to get a sound like this! It's seems like u have the absolute control of the sound.. Im in love with this software!
It's never going to sounds exactly like the amps it models. I use GR3, and it's great for experimenting with new sounds. Once you understand Rig Kontrol and the modifiers, you can do some pretty amazing tweaks while playing that wouldn't be possible without software. If you want to go your own way and have your own sounds, this is for you.
great if you like to be inventive and you can't play keyboards. This guys job is to make some background noise. mind you there is roland synth for guitar too. Notice: i didn't say this thing replaces a real guitar set up..thats missing the point of the purpose. Anyway great software, you should try it.
I love reading comments. Just like being in the music industry, people will say you're good and people will say you're shit, missing the point every time. It really doesn't matter... find your sound, do what you do, and the rest will take care of itself.
Ehh yeah... busted my ass off studying guitar techniques, styles, cultural traditions, different kind of guitars, players, and so on for more than 10 years now just to... not sound like a guitarist anymore... right, that makes sense, how stupid i am.
Uh, the only way "classic" guitar sounds got that way is someone INVENTED them. Isn't it enough for you that practically every effects unit on the market - even guitar rig - is catered toward "modeling" old amps? A couple more years and nobody will ever invent anything new on the guitar ever again, because of LOLtards who just want to be [insert "guitar hero" - pun intended - here] without realizing that somebody had to create that sound with blood sweat and tears.
Yes, many folks want to sound like [fill in hero here] and some of those heros did bust thier hump finding sounds. I know I wenth through all the analog including Marshalls, Fenders, etc. But face it, when the model is called "Marshall" you expect to sound like one. And geez how many different sounds were built on a plexi?
So to continue (500 char limit, argh) my gripe is that the models don't sound like the real amps which I once owned. Nor do the effects, like the GR2 CE-1 emulation.
I never said this guy wasn't inventive, just not my idea of what I expect given that "classic" tools were emulated.
Maybe you don't understand that the comment wasn't about him as much as it was about how garbage guitar rig sounds, so flat and digital and one dimensional, Id rather one good real pedal. You are way off mate.
You didn't say that, actually, people can't read your mind over the internet. You actually did say 'maybe he can't program it', implying it could be programmed well just not by him. So I'm not so off... but anyway, I agree in a sense, I've never found a software ampsim sound I am comfortable with... but for some reason I really like pods. I think it's only a true purist who would say software will never fill the hole of analog... it's MUCH closer than it was 10 or even 5 years ago.
Fair enough I see what you mean about my comment, and I agree about the digital advances, never tried a pod though, Id give one a demo but I'm sort of happy slowly building up an analog pedal collection, coming from a digital perspective from when I first started, it was all I knew, until now, and better is better no?
I'm the opposite, I'd started with analog stuff and have been letting it gather dust as I explore digital stuff... it requires more tweaking and patience, but the possibilities are insane. Each to their own though.
I find endless possibilities counter-productive in a real sense, and although the sound possibilities are endless and interesting they occupy this same digital 'space' regardless, I think you have to have a bit of analog in there to crusty up the whole. But of course I use digital sounds and emulations a lot.

it's so digital sounding.
I mean guitar rig is great for practice and playing alone in your room.. but I would never play with it online.

Although I think the Rig Kontrol version is like 500 bux.. now that is so not worth it.
But 160ish for the one without is..
But I'd take my real rig over it anyday since it sounds 20 times better.
Some of the synth-like-weird effects though are pretty cool.

Too bad the first paragraph you said has nothing to do with what I said.
Of course a professional + guitar rig will sound better than an amateur + HQ amp.
I never said different so I don't see what you're arguing against.
Guitar Rig has some cool synth like sounds but this guy should have an actual decent amp as well for his main sound.
And I'm aware it can sound good behind someone "who isn't useless."
Look at Gustava Guerra.
That man is as amazing as some of the professionals.

It's in the special effects category. I think it's called "glass cascade" or something like that. Been a while since I've used it.
It's actually a very common effect to find, believe it or not; but very few artists use it, sadly.

Air use analogue synths, not Guitar Rig. Steve was working with them on a tour.

Steve! Woo!!

THIS SOFTWARE kicks ass,ALL YOU BELOW,SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!POINT MADE!!!MORONS ARE EVERYWHERE!
metalstance07 4 years ago
Ehh yeah... busted my ass off studying guitar techniques, styles, cultural traditions, different kind of guitars, players, and so on for more than 10 years now just to... not sound like a guitarist anymore... right, that makes sense, how stupid i am.
borreztuff 4 years ago
I second that. But I do agree that innovation is good too.
flmason 4 years ago
Well, plenty of interesting effects... But I don't seem to hear an classic guitar tones of any sort, LOL!
flmason 4 years ago
Uh, the only way "classic" guitar sounds got that way is someone INVENTED them. Isn't it enough for you that practically every effects unit on the market - even guitar rig - is catered toward "modeling" old amps? A couple more years and nobody will ever invent anything new on the guitar ever again, because of LOLtards who just want to be [insert "guitar hero" - pun intended - here] without realizing that somebody had to create that sound with blood sweat and tears.
fuzzplugjones 4 years ago
Yes, many folks want to sound like [fill in hero here] and some of those heros did bust thier hump finding sounds. I know I wenth through all the analog including Marshalls, Fenders, etc. But face it, when the model is called "Marshall" you expect to sound like one. And geez how many different sounds were built on a plexi?
flmason 4 years ago
So to continue (500 char limit, argh) my gripe is that the models don't sound like the real amps which I once owned. Nor do the effects, like the GR2 CE-1 emulation.
I never said this guy wasn't inventive, just not my idea of what I expect given that "classic" tools were emulated.

As soon as he puts guitar rig on, it sounds awful. Maybe he can't program it.
750eye 4 years ago
maybe you don't understand the concept of backing musicians, who complement a leading melody rather than trying to sound good on their own.
fox220 4 years ago
Maybe you don't understand that the comment wasn't about him as much as it was about how garbage guitar rig sounds, so flat and digital and one dimensional, Id rather one good real pedal. You are way off mate.
750eye 4 years ago
You didn't say that, actually, people can't read your mind over the internet. You actually did say 'maybe he can't program it', implying it could be programmed well just not by him. So I'm not so off... but anyway, I agree in a sense, I've never found a software ampsim sound I am comfortable with... but for some reason I really like pods. I think it's only a true purist who would say software will never fill the hole of analog... it's MUCH closer than it was 10 or even 5 years ago.
fox220 4 years ago
Fair enough I see what you mean about my comment, and I agree about the digital advances, never tried a pod though, Id give one a demo but I'm sort of happy slowly building up an analog pedal collection, coming from a digital perspective from when I first started, it was all I knew, until now, and better is better no?
750eye 4 years ago
I'm the opposite, I'd started with analog stuff and have been letting it gather dust as I explore digital stuff... it requires more tweaking and patience, but the possibilities are insane. Each to their own though.
fox220 4 years ago
I find endless possibilities counter-productive in a real sense, and although the sound possibilities are endless and interesting they occupy this same digital 'space' regardless, I think you have to have a bit of analog in there to crusty up the whole. But of course I use digital sounds and emulations a lot.

After I set up Guitar rig, I dropped my guitar down the steps and it sounded the same as this guys playing. With all the effects anyone can play.
GR is great when used for convetional tones, Very versatle, Make your $1000 guitar sound like a $300,000,00 Burst through a Marshall.
