That was close. Looks like some right aileron (up) would have helped, but I didn't see any. Maybe they didn't know what side the crosswind was coming from or going to come from. I saw a landing something like this once in Phoenix in 1995, Northwest flight 101 from Minneapolis.

Its nothing to do with the flare, this was a cross wind landing and right before touchdown the pilot failed to remove his crab into the wind causing the gear to hop.

@gamunubala if that's what you want to believe then thats fine. There is no ground situation that makes you inadvertently flare at 50ft, he landed way to far down the runway and probably got a bit slow. The 727 is an old beast with hardly any automatics so you ve got to know what your doing. The wing drop may have been caused by a gust or some unknown factor, but the landing was poor. I'm not saying I'm perfect, we all do bad landings. But that was a bad landing.

@jonny96 Agreed with Gamunubala, besides, any landing you can walk from is a good landing, and if the aircraft is still flyable, it's a great one!

I think (from what I see) that this is what happened:

1.- a little too much speed on the flare, the aircraft floats a bit (ground effect). Therefore, the PIC nose down to try to touch down.

2.- a second before touchdown, a right gust appears, thus turning the aircraft to the left. The pilot reacts quickly and recover, but touching down hard.

It was wind shear. This is the exact same runway and direction as the Lufthansa near-wingstrike last year. I'm surprised they didn't do a go around here...

Didn't look windy at all! I've landed at hamburg and it's a bit different. Try landing at Leeds bradford on a windy day! He flared way to high which nearly resulted in a tail strike with subsequent wing drop! Just a poor landing which shows lack of experience!

either the PF screwed up by putting too much aileron in during the flare, or a sudden gust or shear caused the wing to dip....had over 12,000 hours in that bird never did that !!

Ouch This happened to my flight yesterday,nearly crash landed with a 747 Quantas Flight 5 From Singapore to Frankfurt. And also the left wing nearly hitted the ground. He corrected in the nick of time but we were nearly toast.
