Has anyone commenting seen this film as he moves closer the bus tips more and more and the gold slides, the original idea/solution as Michael Kane suggested/hinted in the clip, that was cut off imho. was to drain the petrol from the bus and hence lighten the load at the rear then move the gold one by one or (by taking all jump suits off make a noose to pull the gold:).) The 'scientific' theory that won just elaborated and vastly improved survival chances of all members of the job.

@mentalist555,your analysis is spot on,those who think they should have passed the gold blocks upfront one by one conveniently forget how close to toppling over the edge they were,they had to act fast to equalise downward drag,there was no time to move gold initially,they had to stabilise the weight problem as you point out with great urgency,but others always know best,dont they!

The coach is just about to tip over,and needs all the men to move upfront immediately to give them any chance of stabillising the downward forces.If the man close to the gold picked up a gold bar his own weight would have momentarily increased,and that may have caused a sudden weight imbalance in an area just enough to generate a further down force momentum,so their first instincts were spot on:stabilise weight imbalance,that buys you time to work out a solution,moving gold first is very risky!

@mentalist555 We did a project on this dilemma at college,duplicating all the known facts from the movie,and moving the gold first before would have almost certainly resulted in the coach toppling over,for the sound reasons you point out,nothing to do with fancy leader problem solver or lack of imagination,this is film drama not reality,so dramatic license is involved,it's entertainment,but we prooved scientifically you dont move gold first,and all of us thought you could,but we were wrong.

im glad they never made a sequal to this story would have ruined it. leave it there its a classic. i hate the fact that they called the latest films of the same tiltle as they did, its an insult.

I'm glad there was no Sequel as it keeps this one a classic. Plus sequels are never as good as the first films anyways.

The thing you need to remember, they are up in the Alps, with no signs of life, and a road with little to no traffic. If they loose the coach, it's gonna be a hell of a walk back to anywhere! And if they did manage to keep the gold, they ain't gonna be able to carry it cus it's too heavy. Further more, the police are still looking for them so carrying gold is gonna make them stand out from the crowd. So yes, they need the gold AND coach to get away with it. So it's still a mystery, not solved :)

when the bus first goes half over the cliff, there all lying downa nd one of them is close to the gold, he should of immediatly just started passing that gold down to the front. but instead they all moved to the front leaving the gold behind!

You would not have to smash that glass to let one out . Just one jump out of the front door . Cant help but wonder if that had happened in reality with real gold just what would have happened . The coach was front end heavy with the weight of the engine and gear box mounted at the fornt , add to all the bodies it is poible it should just ballance with the half a ton of gold at the other end . However they would still have to get the thing back on the road

add the rocks in last hold on wouldnt the coach have been pulled over the edge by the weight of the gold by the time they find enough rocks to balance the gold weight wouldnt it be easier for one of to go into a village they went through knick a truck with some tow rope attach it to the point where the coach it balanced & pull the back end back onto the road?

i am sure that when i first saw this film that the gold did go over the edge along with the bus but all the people jumped out and i cant find this verson any were and if people think i am rong then just check out the VHS verson of alien 3 and then the DVD verson the ending is changed

Yep you dreamed it, there was never a version where the coach went over the edge. It almost did for real in filming, the 2nd unit film crew were filming in a helicopter, as they got close the down draught tipped the coach. The crew and cast had to grab the front bumper to stop it going over! The helicopter was told to back off, they did whilst still filming. Watch the end of the film, it ends with this aerial footage! I have a video of the making of the film, crew, cast and original still shots.

I agree with Gertilish,but,in actual fact,they were going to make a sequel,detailing how they got the gold back,but,the film company ran out of money,and the idea was shelved,how do I know this? Its on the 1999 30th anniversary video,with interviews and xtra footage!!

i just wondered, did anyone else think about the fact that they were on the RUN?!? if you really think about it, they'd be draining the oil and puncturing the tyres, okay, so the gold would survive, but they'd have nothing to get away in and they'd get caught. the solution fails!

Move everyone to the very front of the bus where the drivers seat is, move every moveable item in the bus to the very front, have the smallest man take off all of his clothes, leave the clothes in the very front except for a shoe, crawl to the back, use the shoe to bust out all of the back windows, and very slowly move 1 brick of gold to the front, then eventually start doing it with 2 bricks and then 3, and so on. When the bus has landed firmly on its front wheels, drive off with the gold

depends on how much fuel is in the tank and where the tank is. The scientists did not mention how to drain the fuel nor indicate where the tank may be. And they should only break the glass near the bus back. Not all the middle ones. Also they should all climb out of the sunroof at the back and stand on the roof in case anything happens.
