So this means that a diver coulda been caught in the snorkel of a firefighting heli I dont know if anyone remembers that myth about a divers body in a tree miles from any water.
1. If it didn't make sense economically they obviously wouldn't use them. 2. They can suck up 10000 litres of water in under a minute, drop it on a fire, turn around and do the same thing, relative to the proximity of the water source, in a matter of minutes. So yes, they are very effective, if not the single most effect fire suppression tool ever created.
It's only a "dayboard"....a navigational board placed on poles for the markings of the channel. Some have lights on top, but it's certainly not a bouy per se!!
There's a rear facing seat behind the pilots and a window to look out and monitor the tank and snorkel.
Also the pilots have bubble windows that allow them to stick their heads out and see the end of the dangling snorkel, very useful when trying to dip it into a tank.
They have glass panels in the floor of the cockpit. All helicopter have them to see under the aircraft during lifting operations. The pilot and operations chief can see everything going on under the aircraft, cameras aren't needed.
I work on this helicopter and I have some great footage riding in the back seat of this helicopter from this last fire season. I lucked out and got to ride just before they stopped letting mechanics ride during fire ops. It did not suck the buoy up, it got hung up on the cage at the bottom of the snorkel. As for the back seat pilot station, it is rarely ever used to fly the crane from and there are only a select few pilots who can.
N6979R has a nice brand new paint job as of this month.
Sweeet I know that AC. I wonder if anything got sucked up the snorkle, the back seat is not used during fire fighting operations. I bet they were moving around trying to get the bouy to fall off.
Wow thats so cool, Ive actually seen these Skycranes fill up at the Tahoe Nat'l park there was a small fire nearby, its almost like a giant dragon fly !
the back seat pilot station is only used during construction work if it is used at all. Since the pilots have bubble windows up front, they can place loads just fine from the front.
sucking the life out of the earth... awesome!

Was the boy okay?
MikeOxsmells 10 months ago
@MikeOxsmells Its a bouy, not a boy. A boy is a human, a bouy is a floating object in the water that may have multiple purposes.

For the cost and danger involved in putting such a small amount of water on a potentially massive fire - do these helicopters realy make sense?

there is a rear facing seat for the crane operator, it has a crew of three, pilot, co-pilot, and a crane operator.
