This is also the first episode of "Space: 1999" that I ever watched. I was around 12-14 years old, and the science of the monster intrigued me. How could something that radiates that much energy survive with so little food coming in? How did it move from one ship to another? Now, I look back and am reminded...the guy who played Julini made it all work. His awesome physical acting was what sold that horrible puppeteering. I wish I could have seen more of his work.
That thing scared the crap out of me and I was about 4 years older than darthsideous 1968. Bad as the whole fried carcass thing was, the idea that this thing could just show up was worse.
Like so many others I saw this long before I watch any horror movie. I think I had one of those scrotum tightening moments. I love the spaceship graveyard but especially the alien. I had dreams and daydreams about it for years. It wasn't until I was an adult that I realized the story was about Chellini and his inner monsters. This is my favorite - now both monsters scare me.
gianni or john garko was a very famous spaghetti western star and a respected stage actor working with lucsiano visconti .sartana was his most famous role of the westerns also warterloo with rod steiger and bad mans river with lee van cleef.
I remember being told by my parents that I couldn't watch Space 1999, but I decided to anyway- sneaking into the living room around midnight after the parents went to bed, and watching this episode in the dark so they wouldn't catch me. BIG MISTAKE this episode scared the living shti outta me, and i had to take it. Great episode.
LOL and totally agree with your comment. I was 7 when I saw this episode. My bedroom had a bright white closet door and scatterd lights leaking from the window shutter would reflect off it at night whenever a car drove by the house. My older brother said that's ware the Space Dragon lived. But what was worste was that a year later he and my older counsins tricked me into going to see "Alien". They said it was just like Star Wars... and you liked Star Wars! Right? :-)
One of the better Space: 1999 episodes... but not the best. Some of the production value was sub-par... The choreography was weak; not a very believable creature. The taking in and spitting out of beings in less than a minute makes no sense. The charred bodies looked pathetic. Oh, and all it took was a hatchet to the glowing eye to kill it? They really could have done so much more with the basic story... Anyway, still much better than anything from Season 2.
@informant007 you know..i have to disagree! I thought this eat them up and spit them out charred monster of the 70's was so COOL! I do agree that only a hack to the eye from the mighty Commader was enough to put it out!! LOL! But when I was a kid????....go Commander!!! scary monster at it's best...my opinion!!!

why did the moon base alphans try and hot wire those alien ships and get to earth , or the rest of the ultra probe ship ....come on people lets get thinking all those ships all that alien life , and nobody even took a look under the hood
@MrRowney1 They didn't have time. The Moon with Alpha Moonbase was moving out of range. More importantly, as Dr. Russell pointed out, they did not have any way to be sure that they had truly killed the creature.
@Nowhereman10 dr russell is a medical doctor and should have not gave her opinion on pilots or the astronauts aboard alpha .....sieze the alien crafts and alphans can go home with such riches such high alien advance ships such weapons ....errr im getting carried away ...just cause doctor russell is hot dosent mean we gota do what she says .....now what would you do stay with her or come with us on the ships home
@MrRowney1 Huh? Did you even read what I wrote? When was the last time you watched the episode? They only had a short time to do anything before the Moon and Alpha were out of Eagle range of the derelict fleet. Without Alpha's resources, how could any Alphan staying behind on the derelicts survive for long, much less figure out the alien tech? Further, as Dr. Russell pointed out, there was no way to be even sure that the creature was even dead since it did not register on their sensors at all.
@Nowhereman10 all that knowledge ... left floating in space in seems a waste to mankind ....and yea i did read your diagnosis of there situation ....and i would have possibly lead them to make the exodus to the crafts im sure proffessior victor bergman would have suported my decision ... :)
Note to Yokai1968: Actually "It: The Terror From Beyond Space" was Alien before Alien. Watch the movie some time. No doubt in my mind that Dan O'Bannon was using that forgotten B-movie as a starting point for his own story.
@HerrEllsworth What good would the grenade launcher have done? The point was that Cellini could only kill the "dragon" by gouging its eye. All the grenade launcher would have done is create an explosive decompression, killing Cellini but not the monster.
I was only making a joke. It just seemed as if he wasn't too well-armed when he went back to face that thing. However, I'm not sure if Cellini knew that by gouging out the monster's eye, he could have killed it. Perhaps it was his sacrifice that gave Koenig the idea to smash in the eye.
wow hats off to gerry and silva anderson for a power house show . had me spellbound as a child and frozen with fear at kinda parts now and again and the music ..... long before its time
They need to bring these episodes back and attach it to a future episode. Who ever is still alive needs to be used again in the future episode. At least Martin Landu's services are required. As far as Dragon, eating a human and then spitting it out is way above horrible and US Public TVs wont allow such a seen. The guy definitely has PTSD!
My favourite episode, not only for the truly horrific monster and Tony Celini's living nightmare of a life after the Ultra Probe disaster, but the wonderful use of Albioni's Adagio in G Minor in addition to the creepy incidental music accompanying the appearances of the creature. Really gave the story an epic feel.
THIS IS IT! Finally I've found the 'movie' I remember seeing as a young tyke. I remember some 'octopus thing' that lived in an 'elevator' and ate a bunch of people. I seem to remember the creature having telepathic powers which would draw in its victims and eat them. I even remember it being killed by a guy with an axe! For years I had no clue what it was. Now, I know it wasn't a movie at all, but an episode of Space:1999!
i remember this espisode watched on irish tv scared the life out of me. One of my childhood memories unlike other tv shows knight rider , the ateam or little house on the praire really disturbing
Even if you hated the premise of the series (the moon traveling through interstellar space), they did suggest later in the series that they had traveled through a wormhole at some point. I also believe that there was something else pulling them along -- correct me if I'm wrong.
no you are not wrong thyre uncontrolled flight was pre-destined arra knew that from collision course episode for all its detractors space 1999 to me made me think and dream it was the impossibilities to me that attracted me to it when i later saw it in reruns i was only a teen when it first appeared, i get more out of it being older when i was younger it was the shows look and sets that impressed me i love space 1999.
The whole premise of the show was nuts though - it would have taken years for the moon to even leave the solar system, if it managed to escape Jupiter's gravity.
that was explained by the mysterious unknown force that guided thy're journey through our solar system i know what your saying but were talking science fiction here i just enjoyed the show still do today with the ae dvd box set.
@Nautilus1972 As one who has taught science in school, I was always amazed at how dazzling and well-crafted this show was....but that it never seemed to take the physics of space travel seriously. This episode, though very powerful, has a gaping plothole in the fact that it would take centuries if not eons for the moon or that graveyard of spaceships to drift "light years from Ultra" as Prof. Bergman had indicated.
This was the best episode of the first season and as a kid it scared the hell out of me. I am renting the whole series from netflix and I'm looking forward to seeing this one again
I still maintain...one of the most frightening episodes in any series...and aired in 1975! It scared the living daylights out of me when I first saw it. I never walked into a dark basement again and looked at it the same way! Good work here!
This is a classic tale of what kinds of nightmares & other horrors could possibly await the unwarry deep space explorers, and sadly for these unfortunate crew members they were light years away from where anyone could help or save them from the terror that befell them. Tony chellini lived to tell his fantastic & terrifying tale and no one believed him. By todays standards the special effects may be abit cheesy, but still the story & imagery were brilliant and are still timeless!
The second season of Space 1999 was a disaster. They should have stayed with the same sets and characters from season one. This first season episode was my favorite. Great story, and although the special effects are a bit cheesy by today's standards, they did the job. Gianni Garko as Tony Cellini was an unforgettable character. The use of Adagio in G minor as the background score was perfect. I sort of wish this episode was remastered with present day special effects like Star Trek.
I totally agree with you about the first season vs the second season!
The second season was terrible!!! The second season is a classic example of what happens when American producers feel they can do a better job when it comes to designs, scripts & storries and they ultimately destroyed the series.
This story "Dragons Domain" from the first season was the first story I ever saw when I was 6 or 7 years old and it really scared the shit out of me! Now I'm 41 and it STILL gives me the chills! lol
Season 1 of this show was THE BEST! Sadly some American writers & producers took control of the series and then when season 2 aired the whole look, attitude and stories of Space 1999 took a series crash & burn nose dive!
Season 2 tried to jazz the show up with corny music & even cornier special effects! They even added the groovy attitude of "Lets make luv on Alpha not war" between Cmndr Koenig & Dr Russel & introduced that wacky flirting between Tony & Mya!
Besides that you will notice that they removed key figures in the series like Paul "(Played by Actor Prentis Hancock)" & Proffessor Victor Bergman "(Played by the late great Actor Barry Morse)" & replaced them with Tony "(Played by Tony Anholt)" & the Psychon metamorph Mya "(Played by the lovely Cathrine Schell)" and then the stories got stupid,The music got ridiculous & special effects got even worse! Then shortly thereafter Space 1999 sadly went into the rubbish tip!
Totally agree. It was a pitty. Thanks for your comments and this interesting information. For the moment, I'll try to download the chapters of 1st season. Thanks again, bro.
@darthsideous1968 I didn't like the 2nd season at all, but there were a few things I did like, like Maya's character, the super version of the Eagle you see in the first episode of the 2nd season and the uniforms, but I didn't like how different it was.
I agree with you that Cathrine Schell's character of Maya was pretty cool, not to mention she was, and still is, very attractive. I also liked the swift eagles they had in some episodes. There admittedly were a few good episodes in season 2 but over all season 2 came no where near as being as good as season 1 was.
@darthsideous1968 "This story "Dragons Domain" from the first season was the first story I ever saw when I was 6 or 7 years old and it really scared the shit out of me! Now I'm 41 and it STILL gives me the chills! lol" OMG, The same for me!!! I havent seen this series since the 70s but I alwaysremembered this monster because it scared the shit out of me! I just saw a clip of it here, for the first time in 30 or more years, holy crap!
This episode should have remained as part of Alan's backstory. It would have except that there was an Italian consortium backing this show and they wanted one of their own in this episode. So Nick Tate got shafted.
yeah a remember dis one mental scars as a kid forced ta watch by brothers a cant help figure if da aliens and other sci fis where hatched from this very early proto type
Hi Fantastic story - one of the very best (the best? ) from all of 1999. I enjoyed it 1st time on TV when I was a lot younger and many times since including via DVD. Your posting provides an excellent overview and I greatly enjoyed it again.
Yep im another one of those who had the living shit scared out of me as a kid, nightmares the lot, still freaks me a bit to see this all these years later, thanks for creeping me out all over again lol
Load of ol shit greedy lol!! next thing you'll be telling me you hid roun the back of the sofa when fingerbobs came on !! get a backbone sonny ha ha ha
I think alot of movies stole their ideas from the first season of space 1999.I think if the series had not been changed it would have continued on for a third or even fourth season with the show developing and maturing and relationships developing.Sadly ,it was not meant to be.
I saw this episode one night when I was a kid all alone. My family had gone out and I was sitting there in the dark. I remeber turning every light in the house on!
This is Alien before Alien. Derelict space craft, terrifying creature kills crew, one survivor escapes, nobody believes him back home, returns to face the horror. Bloody brilliant! This is without doubt the best of all episodes made for sheer terror alone. *****
Your remarks about this Space 1999 episode are spot-on, couldn't agree with you more! This was one helluva scary episode for me when I was a pre-teen!
Oh my gosh, I saw this episode ONCE as a kid and had nightmares about it periodically for the rest of my life. After awhile I wasn't even sure if it was really from TV or I just made it up in my head. Thanks for posting Wolfspace.
I was exact same,,, 30 years between seeing it on tv and then finding the episode to download, I thought it somethin i came up with in my mind as well,
me too. I was trying to remember this episode name because there was a Doctor Who episode called Planet of Evil around the same time where an anti-matter monster killed people, leaving dry husks of corpses. Both that and this episode of Space 1999 scared me silly all those years ago.
This show gave me nightmares for years as a kid I had never been so scared in my life. Just freeking scary as all hell I think the idea that something could make you override your own will and make you willing sacrifice your own life
ha ha! saturday mornings before world of sport. I was a kid when I last saw this and scared me to death. A little bit disturbing for a five year old kid, but then again, so was dickie davis.
This is my favorite episode of the series. Despite its flaws it is a terrific story on redemption and courage. Additionally, I owe it for exposing me to the terrific Adagion in G Minor composition by Tomaso Albinoni.
I have ambitions to construct my own Ultra Probeship. I hope to find the detailed pictures of it.
Poor Chellini. He survived the first horror, been tormented by constant nightmares, endured many unproductive psychotherapy sessions, running amok and stealing a shuttle craft, returning as the lone survivor of the first failed mission to the place where the hideous beast lays in wait for him, giving it a valiant go in destroying the thing only to find himself the final victim. Dispite the make-believe monster and all, this was the most dramatic and heart-felt epi in the Space: 1999 series.
I'll bet that creature smelled like burning ass hairs. I'll bet it smelled really bad when Konig killed it, like someone getting a perm while taking a shit with liver and onions cooking all at the same time.
That tentacled horror gave me nightmares for years!!!

I was probably about four years old when I saw this episode. I had no idea what was going on, but it scared the everloving Hell out of me.
Then I saw the 'Devil in the Dark' episode of Star Trek. You know the one, with the man-eating deep-dish pizza.
Oh, and I had got hooked on Doctor Who at the same time, late Pertwee era and early Baker with the really freaky monsters.
Is it any wonder that I slept with a light on until I started sleeping with my first girlfriend?

The second season was terrible!!! The second season is a classic example of what happens when American producers feel they can do a better job when it comes to designs, scripts & storries and they ultimately destroyed the series.
This story "Dragons Domain" from the first season was the first story I ever saw when I was 6 or 7 years old and it really scared the shit out of me! Now I'm 41 and it STILL gives me the chills! lol

I am totally agree with you. First season was the best, better effects, better histories. Dragon's Domain was the best.

Thanks for the reply.
They even added the groovy attitude of "Lets make luv on Alpha not war" between Cmndr Koenig & Dr Russel & introduced that wacky flirting between Tony & Mya!
darthsideous1968 2 years ago

@michaelhviper
Thanks for the comment.

I saw this when I was 9. I think I've never been the same since! Scary as hell, but it was the best series on television.
jonesy97 2 years ago
Probably the best episode of the entire series! IMO.

This episode should have remained as part of Alan's backstory. It would have except that there was an Italian consortium backing this show and they wanted one of their own in this episode. So Nick Tate got shafted.

Hi Fantastic story - one of the very best (the best? ) from all of 1999. I enjoyed it 1st time on TV when I was a lot younger and many times since including via DVD. Your posting provides an excellent overview and I greatly enjoyed it again.
Thanks for sharing

I think alot of movies stole their ideas from the first season of space 1999.I think if the series had not been changed it would have continued on for a third or even fourth season with the show developing and maturing and relationships developing.Sadly ,it was not meant to be.

I remember seeing this as a kid, and I still get chills from that thing! It makes my hands want a phaser rifle (oops, wrong show).

This is the one episode that has stuck with me. The bodies popping back out definitely made an impression on 7 year old!

I was exact same,,, 30 years between seeing it on tv and then finding the episode to download, I thought it somethin i came up with in my mind as well,
robbie77300 2 years ago
I must have been about 6 when I saw this, and I was bloody terrified LOL
Now I'd have to say that its got to be the best episode from this great series. Even worthy of a full length movie remake with better effects.
dunamission 2 years ago
me too. I was trying to remember this episode name because there was a Doctor Who episode called Planet of Evil around the same time where an anti-matter monster killed people, leaving dry husks of corpses. Both that and this episode of Space 1999 scared me silly all those years ago.

If you only ever see one episode of Space 1999, see this one.
Unfortunately, this is way ahead of all the others. The other episodes don't even come close.

Thank you so much for this terffic summary clip.
My many thanks to you.

Dispite the make-believe monster and all, this was the most dramatic and heart-felt epi in the Space: 1999 series.
odiemodie1 3 years ago 3
I'll bet that creature smelled like burning ass hairs. I'll bet it smelled really bad when Konig killed it, like someone getting a perm while taking a shit with liver and onions cooking all at the same time.

That's the most disgusting thing I've ever read! But you are probably right though.
