  • Sublime. Excellent.

  • j;d;florez la perfection rien a dire on ne fait pas mieux he is the best i love......

  • Gorgeous lyrical in the best bel canto tradition! Great idea to sing outside. As to the comment anout the piano, bull! It sounded fine considering it was being played outdoors! A voice like this comes once a generation; in the 40; we had Bjoerling, in the 50's we had Corelli, in the 60's Gedda, the 70's and 80's Pavarotti. Florez will carry that torch just fine, thank you!

  • the best!

  • JDF is incredible, but if you like this aria, check out Ramon Centeno's rendition, not with great audio quality, but one can still appreciate his great talent.

  • just so gorgeous

  • Good piano or not, Florez is always so professional, not speaking about his beautiful singing. Always trying to give his best, even if the audience would not really care or appreciate. I love his style.

  • Brings me to my knees everytime

  • When I hear Florez's beautiful lyric tenor voice, I am moved to tears.

    Bravo, Maestro

  • You'd have thought they could at least provide a good piano!

  • Yeah -- I was just thinking the same thing!

  • Beautiful! and 'pretty' but Corelli... AYYYY!

  • @westlifeizqueer

Eh, c'mon, don't be cruel. Comparisons with Corelli are not fair or either allowed.:-)

  • livello artistico -scuola media musicale ............

  • partiquino en epoca de los grandes tenores

  • no kraus but not bad..this song belongs to kraus, the master....

  • Truth to tell, Florez's voice is not the best for this aria or for Bellini in general. His is too small, too thin, and too inexpressive for Bellini. You need a more ample voice that the singer can shade in various ways. That is why heavier tenors do better in the role. Florez has become a cult in which often proper criticism is silenced or not allowed. He is not beyond criticism. He is not God; nor is his singing perfect.

  • mhh, i have a diffrent opinion. florez voice is nearly perfect for it, ok he has not a voice like pavarotti, but he still has a nice lyric voice with good high notes. and for singing bellini u need a lyric voice not a spinto.

    Pablo Meléndez-Haddad, ABC, 4 August 2008

Emecé, El Diario Vasco, 29 May 2008

  • why does everyone focus on complaining. apparently a good majority of the people who listen to this video think JDF is a good singer. Why worry with comparing him or pointing out flaws that other amazing and older tenors accomplish? just sit back and enjoy the beautiful music while you can. time passes by so quikly why are we worrying with these trivial scruples? just enjoy!

  • @movieluvr69 why compare? this man has gift. we should all be grateful we are able to witness his art. singers like this happen once in a lifetime. i thank god he is singing during my lifetime.

  • he sounds good to me. WHy are people such haters?

  • I agree. He's pure magic. He may not be a Pavarotti, a Bjorling, or a Corelli....yet. But those are very high standards to be compared to. It's like saying that Lionel Messi is not a great footballer because he has not yet shown himself to be as great as Pele. Florez is a joy to listen to any which way you look at it.

  • I think it's funny comparing Florez to Corelli. Yes, they're both tenors, but it's still like comparing Michael Jordan to Tiger Woods.

  • I will have to agree with you. I love how pretty Florez's voice is. It sounds like the sweetest violin bowing the melody. However Corelli stirs my soul with his fearless approach to the melody. Total unabadon and fire. It assaults my ears in the must beautiful way, each time I hear it.

  • bravo Juan Diego. The rest of you, I mean the most recent posts, can't recognize a beautiful, natural voice when you hear it. Corelli was great, and there will never be another, nor should there be. What's lost, has been lost forever. Juan Diego Florez is the best, most consistent commercial tenor on the operatic market today. Don't be haters, and live the present. Stop comparing. What use is it?

  • What kind of dumb comment is that? Florez is a tenore leggero while Corelli was a spinto. No correlation whatsoever. Why do you even compare?

  • you are right

  • raythespian; Are you reading all the reviews here LOL.How many of them like you Praise this Tenor? in Florez's case i say tenor loosely. Can all these people be wrong? How could you possibly compare this guy to the Great Franco Corelli you must be quite out of your mind mad.

  • problem is with modern marketing .the money making machine needs fodder NOW.hes good and could be great in years to come if left to develop naturally, but already we hear reports of his voice cracking at the top

  • florez sounds like homer simpson with vibrato.

  • Corelli... definitely the best...

  • No, Lauri Volpi!

  • ...man it was soooo refreshing to hear Corelli sing this after this wimpering, practically effeminate rendition by Florez....He is definately OVERRATED!

    aa

  • ...barely a tenor....more like an alto...

    aa

  • moron

  • oh common I was just teasing.....but Diego's sound is to wimpy for my tastes...he's like a castratti....I like a tenor with some body to his sound...something more substantial..The young Pavarotti had a beautiful lyric line in the upper register but he also had a nive round fat middle sound that threw the upper register into sharp relief in contrast..........so if you chose to listen to a "girly" tenor go ahead, but don't expect a lot of respect from us mach guys!! LOL!!!!

  • yes I have always thought the same, barely a tenor, more like an alto.

  • The sound there was good, I was there.

  • Gracias Juan Diego, me hiciste llorar!!!

  • Ha ha, love the mum telling off her kid at 4.13! This is sensational singing, he has a long career to look forward to.

  • Is Juan lip-synching here? His mouth does not move with the words in most of this video.

  • The image is out of sync with the audio. Happens often during conversion to .flv format for YouTube.

  • Who is the accompanist?

  • Uno dei pochi fuoriclasse della lirica contemporanea.

  • this is sung with such lovely bel canto legato and good taste. it is a joy to watch.

he has impeccable technique, and a gorgeous, delicate, lyrical voice in the tradition of Alfredo Kraus. if he's smart and sticks to this repertory he should have a long, fabulous career. bravissimo.

  • He has more of a light tenor voice rather than lyric.

  • Bell Canto tenor, definitely. Still amazing!

  • yeah he does thats what he said he had at least

  • A lot of these arias need orchestral backing to support the singer. Piano backing doesn't cut it. Florez has a very good voice but should be singing songs that suit a piano backing.

  • Proud of being Peruvias as such a talented tenor! Viva Florez!

  • You being peruvian got nothing to do with Florez being a good singer, got it??

  • Learn how to read. Never said being Peruvian is related to the way he sings. I'm just proud of him, and happy he was born in the same place as I was.

  • Bravo!!!!!!! It might just be the New Zealand winter but I just goosebumps while watching this. Such a shame that the video is not synched with the audio, however

  • sounds like a diego schipa volpi.

  • A miraculous voice that is firm and virile with impeccable technique. It is a pleasure to listen to a voice with so much warmth and expression.

  • What a dreamlike voiceT_T; I was imprinted by Giuseppe di Stefano's Arturo, so I still like sweetful lylic tenor's Arturo such as Florez:D

  • A superb singer!

    Bring him to Houston!

  • Bravo!!!!

  • Che bella voce....

  • Hahah, you go ahead sing it... Bravo Juan Diego, keep on rocking us!

  • I don´t like it. It´s a really good voice. But I think he is not a great opera singer. It´s a matter of taste...

  • It's also an odd choice for a relaxed, outdoor concert. He should be singing Neapolitan songs and other popular arias. He doesn't need to stick to Rossini and Bellini for a festival.

  • i agree, listen to kraus for this song

  • There is something about this man's voice and singing here that touches my heart. I hope the entire video will eventually be available commercially.

  • Bella voce, ma avrei gradito maggior calore & immedesimazione... voto 7. Migliori Giacomo Lauri Volpi, Kraus e Pavarotti.

  • I think he is better suited for the Rossini & Donizetti roles. For the Bellini - he is best for the ELVINO in LA SONAMBULA. The PURITANI demands a bit more heft than his basically sweet lyrical sound.

  • He's a great singer.

  • He's not bad... but I'd rather hear a tenor with a more dark tone sing this stuff... like Miguel Fleta, Luciano Pavarotti, or even Ramon Vargas, who started out singing the same light, fast repertoire that this guy sings.

  • Video out of sync otherwise it was nice. Bet his charming good looks have the ladies following him everywhere.

  • Open space, not a classic Tenor, but EXCELLENT performance.

  • Actually, his light tenor voice is more "classic" than the big lyric voices needed for Puccini or Verdi in the later 19 century opera. Following the demise of the castrati singers, Rossini was interested in the natural high tenor voice needed to sing his Bel Canto tenor roles. Bellini also composed some of his music for these light lyric tenors, as in this aria.

  • I agree, his light voice is perfect for Rossini's Opera's, p.ex. Lindoro in the barber of Sevile

  • his voice aint soft... i think the sound itself is soft...u gotta turn up the volume...

  • Small yet very beautiful voice. Nice legatto and good breath management. He was swallowing saliva too often, was it that the weather was too dry, or maybe he was sick? Who knows. Very nicely placed high note. Great job!!
