He's giving her an objective I'm a studying actor and one of the things that's so crucial when you're acting is the objective You can't just say the lines ask yourself What do you want? What are you doing? And that's what Meisner was asking her, What are you doing? And he gave her a suggestion try doing it as if you're teasing me, so that's what she's doing teasing him And your decision has to be a verb which tease is so it's doable That tad bit of advice changed everything. AMAZING!!!
its funny at the start of part 5 how it seems as if sydney pollack(who trained with meisner) is teaching dustin hoffman(learned form strasbergs teachings). hoffman looks so confused and sydney is just try to simplify it for him, to show him what its really about.
@jsterninmoser - No Dustin Hoffmann studied at The Pasadena Playhouse originally before studying with Strasberg. His close friends Robert Duvall and Jon Voight studied with Sandy.
to gmounit- if you are genuine enough, on stage or in life, you will be believed and thus understood by those of which you share the scene with, again, on the stage or in life.

does Anyone else notice the fact that when your talking to an actor they are perpetually acting and i find it better not to know someone is or was an actor because once you find that out about them they seem more fake and u can really start to analyze that they are acting im just saying i wouldnt want to be an actor because my friends and everyone else who knew would assume i am bein fake more often then if they didnt know i was an actor but im not saying i wouldnt want to be good at acting.Hmmm
i don't really agree with that. everyone does a certain amount of acting in their own day-to-day lives, as a defense mechanism. it is a natural adaptation to being a social organism. professional actors are no more or less genuine that any other person you will meet in your life. there will be some who "pose," and some who do not... just like other people who don't act for a living.
to GmoUnit- I'M AN ACTOR AND WHEN I'M NOT ACTING.........I'M NOT ACTING PERIOD END OF STORY. IT IS YOUR OWN PRECONCEIVED PREJUDICE AGAINST THOSE WHO ARE ACTORS THAT LEADS YOU TO BELIEVE THIS. BECAUSE YOU WANT TO BELIEVE THAT ANYONE WHO IS AN ACTOR "SEEMS MORE FAKE" THAT'S WHAT YOU BELIEVE. BUT REMEMBER....JUST BECAUSE YOU THINK "SOMETHING" IS, DOESN'T MEAN THAT "SOMETHING" IS WHAT YOU THINK, AND I HOPE YOU UNDERSTAND THAT. THERE'S A REALITY AND TRUTH TO EVERYTHING......SEEK IT BEFORE YOU JUDGE
That last exercise between Meisner and Frances proves the greatness of this mans genius. It was so much more interesting and unique after he gave her the adjustments. As a studying actor It has helped me immensely to have the privilege of seeing this video documentary. Thank you for posting this.
If you like Meisner's teachings, also check out Uta Hagen -- There's a 3 hour masterclass on Youtube that she teaches, and her book "A Challenge for the Actor" can be bought for very little money on eBay. She teaches the same principle: Find the character within yourself, and react spontaneously and truthfully to the circumstances the playwright gives you.
@AtLastOnTheGround I've seen the masterclass on Youtube and I loved it. I also own her book & use alot of her techniques in my acting. Her, Meisner & Adler are for me the 3 main teachers whose techniques help me to get me where I need to be as an actor. Adler was the first teacher I got into because of my love for Brando & the effect she had on him. But I must admit Meisner & Hagen changed alot for me as an actor but I'm grateful for all 3 of them.
