@tlaikens, by the way, you mentioned hitting himself to help gain power but what I'm taught is learning to find the jing behind a movement and using the movement of your body to gain power. It was actually something in the video that it didn't look like the teacher was doing. I'm just saying, I'm not trying to disrespect anyone because everyone's got their own thing and does what works for them.
I just learned this from my Sifu last week. It's pretty much the same except for some variations. It's really ironic that I randomly found it on youtube.
the effectiveness of any move is in the speed/reaction time. any move anticipated can be defended. in my opinion, these strikes work best when the attacker judges the strength/preparation of their subject in error.
perhaps there is something to the form of movement connected to this art that first creates a thickness of the core of the body and then it becomes layered with what appears to be fat.
Man, no disrespect to Jeff, but he has gotten FAT!!!! Come on man, youre better than that!!! And yes, I know hed still beat the shit outta me!!! Im a speakman fan, but he needs to drop some pounds!!

@DementedDegsy I would agree. But I see alot of Kempo guys do it! I never understood why you hit your clothing. It just makes a cool sound and make it sound like you are doing more than you are. However, some of the techniques are pretty effective.

I am a martial artist for 40 years now and have seen my own grand master go up in weight and smoke a pack of cigs a day. I lost respect for them when they get this out of shape. You can't move the right way when you are 50 pounds over weight and you can see it in Speakman. I am 52 years old and still weigh 190 at five feet ten inches for more than 25 years. No excuse!
Can Mr. Speakman still do his Kenpo, can Mr. Speakman still teach his Kenpo, does Mr. Speakman have a greater understanding of his Kenpo let's say more then when he was 25 years old and maybe at 5% body fat, I think the anwser is yes to all of these questions. I am in my early 40s and I am working on my weight because I know some people think if you are heavy you can not do the martial arts.I respect Mr. Speakman's Martial Arts skills & knowledge not his body. Osu
@gomergilligan Jeff has struggled with a glandular disorder all his life. It's exceptionally hard to manage weight like that dude. Not trying to flame or start a fight. Just thought you might like to know. But yeah..hehe..alot of them are fat. They don't have to be as good anymore.
@DarkGallahad - I gotta remember that - "glandular disorder". "Hey Gom, why the hell are you so FAAAT!!!" - "It's not my fault - glandular disorder". heh heh

Speakman and Seagal were and are the 2 Speed merchants of the movie game..Speakman died very young..Late 50's? I think it was..'90 or '91?? I'm not exactly sure but If u Google his name U'll get some great info on his Kenpo..American Kenpo I think was the name of the Organisation he set up with a few others..I love watching these videos because they're inciteful..He didn't make any DVD's as such about his style of Kenpo because he felt his style of teaching was tailored more for 1 to 1..
@shadowman2192 Jeff Speakman died back in the 1990's I think my friend..I loved his films..I never saw him in films b4 yesterday..I Googled him and found out loads about him. He's a pretty interesting guy by all acounts.Set up American Kenpo..If u Google U'll find it out online..Shame he didn't make more films tho..He was a decent actor besides all the Karate..better than most of these Van Dammes and such..As good on screen as Seagal I think anyways..lol..better actor..I like Seagal 2 tho
1:00.... Cmon this dude is like a statue? ppl in real fights will move.. so the follow ups to the first 2 hits u make wont be able to land.... ( People move ) just saying :P
you know another user on one of the other videos said this exact statement as a reply to your statement here: "asking why the person doesn't move during a demonstration is kind of like asking why they dont use live rounds on you when you go to a firing/training range." it's practice, and when you're that fast, they won't have a chance to move most likely.
Kenpo is an amazing Martial Science/Art. And Mr. Speakman is awesome definitely up there with Bruce Lee and Ed Parker in my book. I took Kenpo classes in the 80's under Jack Shaumburger in Upstate N.Y. And made it to orange belt in the 90's in El Paso, Texas. I would recommend learning Kenpo to everyone it truly is the marriage of gravity and motion. After watching this I feel the need to practice again. Adieu
I love how these guys, in order to look tough, take their cooperative demonstrator and nail him as hard as they can. This happened everytime I "volunteered" to demo a technique. Ridiculous!
He isn't actually hitting the guy very hard. Most of that noise is coming from Speakman hitting his own Gi (uniform). As for your experience, you must've had some big-headed teachers. Too bad. I've even had Mr. Paul Mills demonstrate on me and he was very gentle, but the intensity, speed and strength were all there. That's a testament to his control. I'm currently an orange belt in AKKI Kenpo and don't plan to stop anytime soon.
Having started learning this back in the 90's I've forgotten how much geometry is actually taught in this art. It's a lot to learn but seeing how it all comes together is truly amazing! And yes, he may have put on weight, but ask yourself this: Could I stand there and take a hit from this man? Answer: I wouldn't want to find out.
While it is true that being in good shape is preferable to being obese, true martial arts do not absolutely require it. Arts such as Kenpo & Kung Fu have an internal structure that the practitioner must "find." Once said practitioner finds his structure, he can ironically become lazier with his technique (meaning he no longer has to strictly follow textbook motions for the techniques to work). While Mr. Speakman does appear to be over-weight, his Kenpo is better now than when he was young.
@quanfa88 If people are going to bust his chops for putting on a few pounds, can they even imagine what he'd be like if he'd never started training? He'd be worse off. And some weight gain is natural with age. The celebs who never seem to age are training to maintain that IMAGE; the non-celebrity portion of the human race will train (those of us who do train) to maintain HEALTH. Sometimes those two crossover but not necessarily. But ignorant Youtubers often don't know the difference.
@quanfa88 Just a note: What action stars HAVEN'T aged? Van Damme is way lighter than before (but still lean & can move); Lundgren has a bit of a belly now (but still does karate); Seagal is bigger (duh!); & Arnold is in the same boat as Lundgren. Only Sly seems to have maintained himself impressively & it might have to do with using Hgh (or not). And Sly's always been adept at staying lean.
Mr. Speakman could probably retire from his movies , or just phone in a few seminars a year , but here he is getting down and dirty explaining and teaching his art with real passion. how cool is that? and even guys like Chuck Norris, while i may not jibe with his style, i bet he is somewhere right now teaching people what he knows because he loves it. sure they get paid and make a living, but trust me, they don't have to get this engaged to do that. they just love it..respect.
