Funny, I never knew he played in gnr until a couple of days ago. Was slightly aware after listening to old freak kitchen and thought he sounded pretty cool.
I never quite understood this best guitarist argument either. As a guitarist myself I never considered one's technical abilities and theory knowledge as a barometer for judging who's a better musician than who. As the late great Shawn Lane once said, it doesn't matter what technical level you're at as long as you produce good music.
I'm working my way thru a "10 greatest shredders" list and this was 4th (its not a top10). This is really, really cool and I dont normally like the OTT guitar buzz
I absolutely insist Guthrie is a better guitar player, but he says Ron is, so who the fuck am I to argue. Certainly #1 and #2 though, chose your order ;)
After Shawn Lane passed there are only a handful of players still continuing to pioneer experimentation with guitar and guitar sounds, Ron Thal being one of them, and also Mattias, Guthrie Govan, Buckethead, Christophe Godin, etc. They don't have the same impact as Shawn did but I'm sure glad they're around.
Bumblefoot just did the theme music for "Brimstone & the BorderHounds" the Animated series based on the book. great intro !! You tube it !! hes also going to be one of the voices in the cartoon !
There comes a point when you can't compare guitarists anymore. When it comes to Buckethead, Bumblefoot, Paul Gilbert, Yngwie Malmsteen, Jason Becker, John Patrucci, Jeff beck, Chris Broderick, etc. There is no better guitarist.
Depending on their style they specialize in their own skills, techniques and sounds. That makes them all different, and thus more unique listening pleasure for us.
There is no best guitarist, they are all gods for fuck sake
malmsteen is a pioneer of the shred genre, but he failed to evolve and can be very repetitive. some people like guthrie govan and buckethead are able to use their repetitiveness while still doing new things and making it hard to catch, but malmsteen never really learned to do that. he uses the same patterns and ascends and descends across the fretboard the same way far too often. i say bumblefoot because of this.
@CyValkarion The piece's structure actually reminds me of certain Chopin (et al) etudes. Take Op. 25 No. 10 for example: crazy octaves in the intro, slow melodic middle section and then a recapitulation of the insanity.
Ps: Lane rules and his album material is very well put together as well. His live stuff is always blazing though.
@Spider3717 Spider is really witty. Unfortunately he failed to comprehend that this entire song was made with just one objective in mind: the biggest over the top wank piece imaginable (to consequently enter an absurd shredding contest). Therefore little spider here sounds a bit ignorant. You know, dissing something he doesn't understand the basics of. Like every other loud mouthed internet badass...
Bumblefoot is legendary! He was able to go from being underground, to being in GUNS 'N ROSES! Guns 'n Roses was legendary, but it's just too damn bad they broke up ;_;
@emhass - I don't think they ever split lol. I have Ron as a friend on facebook, and ever since he accepted me, his page is being updated with whatever country he is in on tour. They might have just had a break from touring possibly.

@emhass I love new gnr but I get where you are coming from. I mean sure it is a different experience with old gnr but if slash got together new gnr wouldn't be much different I mean Axl would still wanna play chinese democracy songs and both of them wouldn't have the amount of energy they used to have a long time ago so no jumping around like they used to.
@diablo9333 That sucks. :( Oh and one more thing. I have the Encyclopedia of Heavy Metal, and Ronnie James Dio even wrote the foreword! But my friends STILL dont understand it's a valid source of information even though Dio himself said that it's the best metal source that he's had! Guns 'n Roses is CERTAINLY metal!!!!!!! Right?

@maestrodecapilla no te comprendo, si un wey toca mas rapido que esto, y no importa que sea tapping, me diras que no es rapido? es obvio que si puede hacer esto con la tecnica del tapping, sera mas rapido con el plumeo

@ketchupisevil Whoops, my bad bro; you're right. I guess I just kinda saw the similarities between the two songs, as they both shred "happily", if you get my drift. My bad.
sorry, but this doens't impress me near as much as guys like Robert Johnson, Link Wray and Eddie Cochrane. Honestly, guitar work like this and songs by Dragonforce, Steve Vai and Malmsteen just aren't as impressive. For the most part it really is playing fast for the sake of playing fast. It's impressive they can move that fast, but doesn't make them anywhere near the best. Just my opinion so no one needs to go into a rage over this.
@kingjollygreen - There is a difference between being a great guitarist and great songwriter. I agree that these guys are great at guitar, but not necessarily as good at songwriting. However there are some real gems in their albums that cross the barrier, for example "tender surrender" by steve vai, is full of emotion and great righting, it has shred in it, but its like a test to see how much you can shred while remaining mellow and tasteful, its like polished, shred mellowness
true, but steve vai isn't always the best performer. it drives me nuts when he overuses the tremolo and bends every note of tune. he is a great songwriter, but as far as performing goes he bends a lot of his notes out of tune which is a big no-no for me.

@tmvestbo He married my cousin and he told her that is was the worst decision of his career because he doesn't drink or do anything like that. Everybody else in the band does.
Even though i'd love to be able to play this, I wouldn't give up my slow (albeit shitty) blues jams any day. Much more rewarding as an artist, than to wank for 3:15 and call it a song.
@Zeraninator What about being able to do both? Are you implying that Bumblefoot can't play slow blues because he can play fast? Not that it's relevant, it just kind of irks me.
Why the hell is everyone splitting hairs about what makes a good musician? Stop wasting time and just appreciate the music.

Even though i'd love to be able to play this, I wouldn't give up my slow (albeit shitty) blues jams any day. Much more rewarding as an artist, than to wank for 3:15 and call it a song.

@Zeraninator Then go watch slow blues videos and shut the fuck up.

Did you get the general message I was trying to convey on my comment? Obviously not, you fucking asshat.

@Zeraninator Go fuck yourself. Everytime you'll try to answer me, I'll come back to insult you. It's up to you. OK?

This is an answer to your comment.

@Zeraninator Ha! Ha! Funny! But you didn't insult me, so I won't insult you. Ha! Ha! That was actually funny. Coming from you, that's a surprise.

Coming from me, that's a surprise? You don't even know me...
Unless that was a hidden insult. Stop with the mindfux, kay?

@Zeraninator Artist??? Cool !! What stuuf have you done?? I love blues

Anybody is an artist. It;s what you make of it. That being said, i'm not professional, nor have I recorded anything.

@Zeraninator What about being able to do both? Are you implying that Bumblefoot can't play slow blues because he can play fast? Not that it's relevant, it just kind of irks me.
ShredST 1 year ago
I don't believe I implied that. I know I said i'd never be able to do what Bumblefoot is, but I don't think I said the opposite.
Oh, and I appreciate you not being a complete ass like almost everyone else in the comments section.
