if yall think about and one scary fact...if a tornado came down in hutch and didn't go back up...we'd all be fucked...it would bounce around like a pinball and destroy the town! but that would wipe this god forsaken town off the map! But in all respect i was about two miles away from that tornado at cenntennial road , i lived on bloomville...but we couldn't see it because it was raining so hard.
This is a ridiculous video - It looks so much worse in this video than what it was....It lasted about 20 minutes and no tornado touched down in Hutch. Tornados don't hit Hutch it is in a valley and in the history of Hutchinson there have been no tornados. There have been many in Nickerson and Willowbrook but none in Hutch. We did get plenty of rain and the sirens were going off and it was scary at the time but nothing happened. This video should be called "Spring/Summer in KS".
Tornado's are no joke, I have been in two and they are no fun. I was caught outside when a tornado touchdown on the Iowa State University Campus and a mile away from the one that touchdown about a month latter in Ames, Ia. Both Sucked big time but have to admit they were pretty interesting to see them both.
I loved the gust of wind before the precipitation started falling. Perhaps that was pressure gradient force winds from the tornado touchdown (since it was at the front of the supercell). How far away was that tornado touchdown from you?
Here in the Seattle area, that amount of rain is equal to an average rainy fall day. There's been a few tornadoes in the Puget Sound area (Two in Tacoma caused some damage), but I've seen two: One in Custer by the Canadian border and one in my hometown. there was a VERY definite rapid swirl and a funnel trying to form, but it travelled southeast and died out after 2 miles.
Do you know Michael Jay? Went to school @ Barclay with him. When I first saw "Hutch"; it was 20 below 0 & the toilets froze solid on the Amtrak train!!! I got off the train at 4 in the morning & prayed my ride fm Barclay was there.
Thanks for sharing this, I am glad that Hutch didn't turn into another Greensburg. Family is from Greensburg, and I have been to hutch a few time, if that had happened in Hutch so many more lives would have been lost
I should add we left in 98 & are now 1800 miles away on Cape Cod; where the worst thing we worry about is a freak hurricane. I remember a lighting display I've never seen the like of & twisters touching down near us; but Haviland has never been hit in it's history. I know those great fplks there are doing all they can for the victims. Stay safe, Glenn
I studied for the ministry back in 97 @ Barclay College in Haviland; how surreal watching coverage of Greensburg, where we went regulary. My wife & daughter will never forget the eerie sound of those sirens or the storms, that are second to none; & i lived in Texas too!
Hey man, thanks for your concern, but its all good now....that tornado was just a brief touchdown, so thats good, and we should be alright tonight, but i wish it would stop raining
That is scary and when I heard the sirens my heart went from my chest to my throat. You guys should be breathing a sigh of relief. I can't even describe how I feel after watching that.
Some say hutchinson is safe from any "big" tornados due to the bowl it sits in but im just waiting for our Greensburg...

You know you're a Kansan when, instead of taking cover, everybody goes out on their front lawns looking up for a damn funnel! I love it!
Centennial is a north/south county road 1 mi W of Nickerson RD...4th & Centennial is a good 9 miles W of downtown Hutch...
Hey...Dave Freeman! I remember that weather man!

Man...I bet you guys were worried when you heard the sirens - they sound so scary and eery. Especially when that rain came down.
How far was the tornado away from you? Just asking since the wind doesn't seem very strong...
Take care!
