Just wondering; can you alternate between diferent materials, such as paper or card and linen? I'm assuming it'll all bond the same with the apoxy but I may be wrong
couple of questions, where did you purchase your 220 - 600 grit belts? Just finished sanding two blades for my daughters made out of crashcarta, one is purple and the other is pink both came out great! Thanks for posting this vid. Also what compound do you use to buff the micarta?
@cre8tivesolutions I get my belts from G.L Pearce Abrasive Co. The don't have a website. Got the info from an add in Blade Magazine His 1 X 30 belts are 70 cents each and his 2 X 72 belts are $1.70. His numbers are -- (814) 938-2379 for inquiries and (800) 938-0021 for ordering only.
For buffing the micarta I use a clean wheel and white buffing compound.
@ninja6kid Yes you can. I've made a few different patterns with colored construction paper and have liked the result. I have not embedded anything into my micarta, but don't see why it wouldn't work.
@IEJP I did some searching and found that regular epoxy resin is stronger when it comes to its adhesion and resists fractures better and wont absorb water or be damaged by acidic fluids. So if I was you I would stick to that since polyester can come apart on you or fracture along with holding moisture will make it a bigger headache in the future.
Awesome video! Im pretty new to bow making but I will be making some micarta to use as accent strips in alongbow. Archers call in "phenolic" is this pretty much the same? Also can you use any type of cloth like pieces of a cotton t-shirt? From your experience, what materials will or will not work. Is there a particular brand resin that you prefer? Thanks for the great videos. Love the "do it yourself" projects!
@eccad252 I haven't done any bowyer work, so can't help you with that. As far as materials - as long as it is absorbent enough for the epoxy to soak in, it should work.
@captjeff78 I vary the amount of material depending on 1 - how thick it is, and 2 - how thick I want the handle. Remeber that you'll be cutting it in half, so it will be twice as thick as the slab you make. One way to gauge it is to clamp up you material before you put any resin on it.

@coontownburning While I've never tried it, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

do you think posterboard would would instead of construction paper?
wolfcookieo9 6 months ago
@wolfcookieo9 It should as long as you get it thoroughly soaked with resin.

can you use marine epoxy, instead of fiberglass resin?

Can you use coloured cardboard paper? and embed brass emblems into it! or basket weve layers!..so cool, the possibilities are endless.

hi again
i use this to make slingshots
i need to know what the diff is between "all purpose" resin and the clear polyester resin
is the clear one as sticky?
cause working with the "all purpose" one is a pain
its like a sticky vile honey

@IEJP I have not worked with polyester resin, so can't offer anything definitive. I would think that the working properties would be similar.
