This cartoon was made during the war. The Japanese were the enemy. We are too particularly politically correct in this day and age to recognize our enemy for who they are and it's nice to see our forefathers were not ashamed to share their disgust through the means of the media. Such cartoons were shown before feature movies to instill patriotism in the public and to raise money for the War Bond cause. Of my fondest memories were billboards that said; TRADE IN YOUR SCRAP TO BEAT A JAP!

Kudos to Popeye for winning the war for us. A lot of people cry racism when they see things like this, well try to imagine the time this occurred in. This was an era without the internet, where all you had to go on was what you heard on radio and read in the papers. Besides, cartoons by their very nature are supposed to be wild and completely different from actual fact. Hell, Daffy Duck fought the Germans and Donald Duck sided with them. All Popeye did was beat the Japanese up. Big deal.

Holy shit! That scene where he swallowed the gasoline and firecrackers and started exploding was one of the most badass thing's I've seen in wartime cartoons. It's also the most badass imitable things they must have ever shown in cartoons.

In wartime people use any means possible to gain advantages, including racism in the propaganda. The true test is whether the US acted in a racist manner AFTER THE WAR.

@qbzzt This sort of propaganda creates a sense of superiority amongst the Americans, and that was something that the people on the front and back home needed. Remember Pearl? That hit right at the heart of the American people. They desperately needed every scrap of moral boosters that they could find. Dehumanizing the enemy doesn't sound that bad of a thing in that situation. Makes you feel superior, and easier to kill 'em. That's why you shoot at cardboard cut-outs and not dolls in boot-camp.
