its quite possible, and he's cheating anyway cause hes using drop d tuning. you dont even have to make chord shapes, you just bar the 4th, 5th ,and 6th strings with your 1st finger (in this case hes using his thumb) and they basically make a power chord. easy peasy lemon squeezy.
