  • Bit of a rookie here, but is this Vista or something? Or something completely different/ Or shall I keep quiet?

  • It's linux ;)

  • Keeping quiet would make just fine :)

    Unless you're dual/multi-booting...

  • Sorry for this comment - complete noob here! I have XP Professional on my laptop at the mo', but I'm sick and tired of Microsoft. If I want to load Linux (Sabayon) with Beryl as well, do I have to get rid of XP? I'm nervous about downloading it and ruining my laptop which is a fairly old IBM ThinkPad. Any help?

  • Ubuntu fiesty come pre-installed with compiz, you just have to enable it (its allot like beryl).

  • where can i find this? i want it so bad!! xD (i have Ubuntu 7.0)

  • This might not be very useful but Windows Vista does the same useless shit..so what. Hopefully Linux will never reach 97% desktop market penetration (hehehehhe he said penetration hehehehehe) thus no virii....

  • linux seems to be a waste of money cause its all based on eye candy

  • Um... Linux is FREE...

  • ye ye nothings ever for free man you gotta learn that. probably bundled with spyware you cant detect.

  • man you are really stupid...instead of Windows, i have to tell you that linux is free because it is basically a student developped OS...wich simply become famous because it is powerful...and is becoming more powerful than Vista...EVEN if it had some spyware (wich is false and hardly believable)...I would chose the free spyware than the 500$ ones (Vista)...

  • ok but ill doubt we'll see the day when 97% of the market is linux...people want ease of use not fancy shmancy shit that wastes resources

  • "People want ease of use not fancy shmancy shit that wastes resources."

You sound like you don't know jack about Linux, because when people are ready for ease of use and resource efficiency, they'll be using Linux. The sad part is that Beryl's C code's designed to utilize older, slower hardware, and still run the core efficiently, unlike Windows Vista, who's "fancy shmancy shit" requires you to get a new computer, and crashes like its a new trend.

  • Read the following text carefully: Vista IS "fancy schmancy shit that wastes resources." Beryl runs on older machines. Most of the shit on the market today can't run Vista's (much much worse) effects.

  • Actually, that isn't possible. Linux is free as in freedom. You can download the code for it yourself for free, and look through it to make sure there is no spyware. There are many people who do just this, and they still can't find any.

Besides, the way Linux is set up, any Spyware out there for it needs you to type in a password to run, so you would have to run it on purpose.

  • Where have you been? Linux has no spyware. Seriously. The least you could have done is Googled Linux. Even that would have proved you wrong.

  • Linux costs nothing n00b.

  • I don't really like it but i always enjoy seeing some advances on our flat digital world... maybe with some time it could look better

  • This is cool. I can now view all four desktops at once or just the applications open on them (more useful than Alt-Tab). The eye candy is fun too. Pity it's so difficult to get my ATI card working fully in Ubuntu (ATI's problem)

  • Looks pretty ugly to me.

  • lol You people suck.

You might not find a good use to it, but some people, like me, love it. So stop making comments like "Waste" or "Unnecessary".

    idiots.

  • cool down! i'm not saying that the effects are waste, but the video is unnecessary i mean the effects were not so special to be recorded. check out linux that has cool rubber like windows! nice.

  • Wow all the people who are posting "useless" and such obviously have never run Beryl ... it adds so much functionality while still looking cool, something that cannot be said for windows; though perhaps mac.

  • Well, these animations seem useless. I bet you mean some other features when you talk about functionality but I have seen no videos posted on those. Could you post one? I'm a Linux user but have not tried Beryl because all I have seen about it has been just eyecandy and bloat.

  • The multiple desktops are extremely useful, I can now do up to 16 times as much stuff at once as I could in windows, while keeping every desktop uncluttered. Using Beryl's great window-switching features (there are alot), I can switch between 15-20 tasks in the time it takes me to switch between 2-3 in Windows. Also, transparencies allow me to look at multiple windows at once. Basically I can just do "more" at once, hence productive. Not to mention the "how cool is this" effects.

  • Multiple desktops don't require Beryl or Compiz and have been around for ages. I usually use 4 graphical desktops and occasionally couple of virtual consoles on top of that for CLI fun.

  • which theme you are using

  • Waste...

  • Did you ever actually try Beryl?

  • Unnecessary.

  • Did you ever actually try Beryl?

  • No, I wouldn't want it.

  • Is it? Then don't install it!

  • hmmm .. pretty ... but not really much use.

  • Did you ever actually try Beryl?

  • ROCK ON!

  • hakazeki, if the mac did it you would probally go fucking nuts.

  • useless waste of processing power

  • Actually it's almost entirely done using the GPU, not CPU, as I assume that's what you mean.

  • It's FAKEEEEEEEEEEE

  • No it isnt. Beryl is a wonderful thing

  • new site "you gave me an std com" you've gotta check out the site and tell your friemds

  • eh, lame. Very poorly designed

  • Do a search for FPU Ball Rollers. Funny mockumentary.

  • They looks cheesy

  • is this 0.1.3?

  • and I need this why?

  • Why would someone favorite this?

  • hehe pretty cool but a shame that i don't own a mac :)

  • Are you daft? This is for linux!

  • its linux you cock

  • 4 instances of vidlord on that cube would be un-freaking believable. someone should write a linux version seriously.

  • this is linux. Wake me up when beryl comes for mac lol

  • you mean "beryl for newbies"?

  • I like this program, but setting it up is a bitch.

  • That's pretty cool.

  • too bad it's ugly gray

  • kinda crappy....but nice try...correction...really crappy.

  • what the HELL?!

  • this shit suck's -_-

  • it's what linux does!!! not going to slow down windows any time soon! haha

  • i dont get it,and its gay whatever it is

  • woohoo... make vista even slower and more of a resource hog than it already is... good job

  • This is hardly unique, innovative, creative, or anything in that realm. These window animations have been tried and used before, and they do not exist in modern operating systems for a reason. As mentioned, they simply are not useful. Hell, they rarely even get used in PowerPoint presentations. Perhaps in 1999 this would have been impressive.

  • and it would use memory and processing power in the background.

  • Argh, that's so not useful

  • When i minimize something I just want it to disappear, not do some crazy crap. This is stupid

  • I agree with you, I dont need all this visualiztion

  • Well you're in luck as Linux, KDE, Gnome, and X-Windows are completely customisable for everyone's taste. You can take or leave whatever you like.

  • They'd better go hack some serious code than develop this flashy crap Beryl. Beryl is only good to amuse dumb Windows-users - just look at the comments.

  • The last time I checked, this looked like GNOME under Linux (Unsure what distro: Doesn't look like Unbuntu, though)

  • who are you to say what they should do? are you offering them a job?

  • Aahhhh, finnish Linux!!

  • Linux is really great, especially for free, but I can't get my wireless card to work on it. Guess I'm stuck with windows.

  • Which wireless card do you have? I am able to get my Intel 3945 A/B/G card to work fine.

  • Sorry my reply took so long. I have a linksys WAP54g V2, which in the Linux world is known for having problems. And even after I got the card finally working (I did), it can't find my WiFi access point, just everyone elses. Oh well... Oh and I still do use Linux, it's too good to pass up!

  • hahah

  • This is pretty lame, really. It doesn't seem as elegant as Vista, IMO. Still, way cool for a free OS.

  • i just installed Beryl on my ubuntu laptop and it looks great i love it =)

smooth and polished and packed with themes and feature and options - keep it up beryl team! =D

  • I want Ubuntu Linux to do that!

  • Cool, but I am sure it must slow the computer down a little.

  • Actually it doesn`t as much as vista, vista is the one that slow downs the computer

  • anyone who says macs suck probably has never used one

  • I've set up a lab full of them. Not my thing.

  • mac's r gay

  • watch my vid its way better than this

  • gettin better

  • lame

  • I can do SOOOOOOOOO better nnerd

  • yeah guys it's linux with aiglx/xgl and beryl and from what i've seen it looks way better than mac osx or vista! =D

  • I'm just going to ignore the Mac fanboys and I'm going to congratulate Cornelius for his new work! He's always capable of amazing me! Well done, Cornelius! Well done, to the whole Beryl team! I know I became a background character, but I still use Beryl daily and I'm still following development actively. Good job, guys!

  • I just want a window to open and close anything else is pointless and geeky

  • pfft, apple are just imitators anyway. and lower than microsoft who at least buy out companies, jobs is a scumbag who just tries to sue ppl out of existence.

  • Way to copy OSX, Windows fucking fails.

  • hey dipshits,

this Beryl on linux. And why do you mac boys care about anything that windows does?

    I don't?

  • nothing speciaaaaaaaaal

  • LOL! All these Elton John gay Mac fanboys are scared of Vista! LOL!

  • How cool are they? theyre not

  • cheesy

  • These are like crap versions of what apple has already done successfully & elegantly in osx.

  • haha nice ! but i prefered the beam up/burn effect, anyway well done !

  • Where can i find information about beryl. every time i search for it I find nothing helpful. I would like to install it on my test machine and see if it's any good. Does it support windows programs like lindows? Can it boot from cd like knopix? Info please :) Thank you :)

  • This would annoy the complete crap out of me. It's the computer version of dotting you 'i's with little flowers. People who want their OS to do stuff like this are just plain creepy.

  • Where can i get me that background with the sun setting or rising over the earth, that is such a cool picture.

  • looks annoying as hell.

  • Then don't use it!

  • does anything like this exist for windows?

I'm using windowblinds, object dock and all that, but I mean minimizing and maximizing and all those animations..

  • sorry, but no

  • The best solution would be to just stop using Windows.

  • oh damn..there really isn't?

seeing how much people have been able to do with PCs and homebrew I'm surprised there isn't..oh well

  • Try downloading a new shell. (explorer.exe is windows default, but there are lots out there.)

  • wow.

20 years from now we'll all be like "back in our time, the windows minimized with NO animation"

  • Which is exactly how I like it. Instant and to the point... I'm trying to close something not close something and watch a friggin movie.

  • haha tru that

  • its just animated GUI on a linux? not suprising...

  • Windows vista is better.

  • I feel bad for you.

  • You're comparing a (well-done) 3D animation to an operating system? You're a fucking tool.

Nice outcome on the effects dude. Keep up the good work. Also a linux user, just on XP right now.

  • Wasted 1:04

  • lame

  • useless

  • Of course it's useless. But that doesn't stop it from being awesome.

  • awful

  • It would be much nicer if the Beryl developers would focus on making it into a usable window manager before they spend more time on irritating bling.

  • I don't see the point in having window transitions. They look cool(not these) for 5 minutes, but when you want to do some work, they start to be annoying, I don't want to be waiting for a window to show up after the animation so I can start using it.

  • I'm with you on them being annoying when you need to do some serious work.

Linux/Ubuntu etc have enough merits to stand on their own as desktop replacement OSes without all these whistles and bells.

Sure, they are nice and all, but like xfxazknight said below, I rather just have fading and scaling effects.

  • annoying transitions. just stick with fading and scaling effects.

  • effects like this are for n00bs. not the 1337 h4X0rz who use linux every day. This might fly on my grandmothers computer

  • 1) No "1337 h4X0rz" say they're 1337.

    2) Effects like this make it the reason I love Linux. If I want a goddamn flashy OS then I can have one. If I don't...I don't need one.

Technically speaking you don't even need a GUI. You can do everything you'd ever want from a command line...but peeps want GUI and I want a fancy GUI. Or have you all lost site that Linux is about choice?

  • whats gui?

  • LINUX OS

  • its a graphical user interface

  • X-Windows

  • A GUI is a graphical method of supplying the user with the ability to interact with the software. IE: picture buttons AND ascii picture buttons can both be considered graphical interfaces so long as they "act" alike (ie both take input from a mouse for example).

  • Script kiddies love telling n00bs how theyr going to smurf their asses into the stone age. 1337$934k might be so 90's, but assholes still like to brag.

  • pretty sik

  • it's a trivial demonstration that the API works. of itself it's not going to help much, but, smoother object display and specifically animation of screen objects as they are presented and removed can help significantly with cognition. so in the long run, this can develop into more than this frivolous candy.

  • which version is that?svn?

  • can you say where can I get theme that is used in this video

  • linux lost its focus?

well it never had one to begin with...

geeks doing meaningless geeky stuff the world wont benefit from...

  • You mean like running most of the servers in the world? Did you get a good reaction this time or would you like to try again?

  • The new transitions are interesting, I guess. Meh.

  • nice novelty. but would get boring, or even annoying, rather fast i imagine.

  • Cool, but the Sabayan distro is the coolest by far.

  • Indeed... Apple realised pretty quickly that too much of this stuff quickly gets on users' nerves, hence the steady decrease in transparent/wibbly effects with each new release of OS X.

  • you are a plain idiot mofo... this is the best message for your level of incompetence and intelligence.

  • How does this improve productivity, exactly? Really unnecessary...

  • Beryl is not *all* about productivity. Gotta have some fun :)

  • Good point - wear a hat & nobody'll see it... :P

  • I think they 'd better smash some bugs out there if they hope to be the default WM in the upcoming Ubuntu version (Feisty)

  • Those transitions all take way too long, and all draw way too much attention to themselves.

While it may be pretty novel to have, I can't imagine I would go more than an hour before just becoming annoyed by all of the flipping and just turning it off.

  • Everything about a transition can be modified, including the time it takes to play.

  • To be honest though, they're ugly. They're impressive maybe I guess in some way, but they look horrible. Completely ruin the look and feel.

  • The flip-down animation is really annoying as well tbh, and the blocks remind me of a cheap tv-series transition. I've always learned that transitions are a big no-no ;)

Anyway, good luck getting your videocard drivers installed properly first before actually being able to use this.

  • U'd be amazed that in Ubuntu 6.10 automatix2bleeder does everything you need to run this in your place. So stop whining and get yo' ass movin' beatch;)

  • Apple Aqua copy for the masses without Mac.

  • lol pathetic mac fanboys are crying because beryl owned their shitty OS

  • Uh. . .no.

  • Kinda chintzy, aren't they? An Apple fade-out rip-off and a rather unprofessional-looking Powerpoint dissolve.

I like the concept, but not what we actually see here being used as a transition.

  • useless

  • then that must mean you can relate.

  • dont be too hard on yourself :-)

(eyecandy indeed but the crowd -see vista/osx- seems to love it)

  • Sorry, what the FUCK are you talking about?

  • Dont be too hard on yourself! :-)

but indeed useless eycandy that the crowd (osx, vista) seems to love

  • Awesome! :)

  • They sure look good :D
