Although I think this performance was great and the judges were wrong to say it wasn't, still, if she'd stayed with this style, she might not have won in the end. Fortunately, the public saved her to go on to the next round. She listened to the judges and her winning performance was terrific also. She can also go back to this style later if she wants to. It's not like what the judges said was written on two tablets and delivered from a mountaintop.

She's not covering Janis Joplin, she's covering Erma Franklin, Aretha's sister. Erma was the first to record "Piece of My Heart" long before Janis Joplin was on the scene. Erma's version is "Before They Were Hits. Vol 1. and can also be found here on You Tube.

Well, Bianca is fabulous no matter who's songs she covers. I've watched her videos of her covering Taylor Swift, and accompaning herself on guitar, and in some cases, she does them better than Taylor herself(and she, too, is a h*** of an artist)! Bianca is also a talented guitarist, too. She plays really well.

binaca is really a good singer......she sings high notes like the other singer but i think her style of singing is kinda old...old ways.... and her pronunciation of the songs is not clear....but she has a good voice
Well. "MagandaPhilippines", the reason she sounds like that is because she is doing the song the same way Janis would have done it. Miss Joplin was not always easy to understand and she sometimes slurred her words. Bianca is staying "true to form" here and doing a real good impersonation of Janis Joplin, and having fun while she is doing it. Not bad for an eleven year old, huh??!!

I can see how my comment could be misinterpreted. Not ref'ing to this particular appearance - but other appearances. Sneaker boots, odd swath pulled back over the top hairstyle she's been sporting. She's got pretty hair, it isn't always styled flatteringly.

She was 12 and trying to win a talent contest. Given what I've learned about how AGT is run, they likely told her to do those songs. The goal was to quickly play to her strengths in a way that a mass audience would digest. The fact that she won would seem to bear out they were good song choices.
Whatever Disco has said or done, that's no excuse for anyone else launching personal attacks on anyone; also, it's a good idea not to get into pissing contests with a creature you think might be a skunk. Two options, perhaps: 1. Don't reply to anything they say. 2. Complain to YouTube about them. I've actually seen option 2 work. I looked for some early videos of Celine. The quality of the videos made it difficult to judge voice quality, but overall, early Celine had issues similar to Bianca's - over-stressing her voice, some off-tune notes, etc. There's no doubt Bianca needs to study, train, and develop her talent, but so did Celine.
"JSteph1950", if you go to her website and forum you will find all about what she is up to and the tours she has done recently. She is quite busy and is trying to keep up with her schoolwork and spend time with her family and friends. I can't imagine what it must be like trying to keep up with all of that at the young age of 14.
I looked at her site, saw that she was doing some performances about every 3 months. The engagements listed on the left of the home page don't have a year associated with them, so could have been in 06 or 07. She is just 14, I know, and seems to have lots of ambition, so I haven't written her off at all. I'd be more interested in hearing what she's doing to get more training. Celine Dion was a brilliant young star, then went through a long dry spell, then went super-nova.
I don't agree with your assessment of her talent to confidence ratio, but sometimes confidence, along with the will to do something, is enough to get the job done. She had fun while doing this hard song. Most of the time having a lot of confidence means that you are certain you have the resources to achieve something special. I met a pro football player once who thought that he didn't have any special talent, but he had a lot of confidence in his abilities. His team won the Super Bowl that year.
I think Bianca has a tremendous amount of confidence, and a huge amount of talent - but much of her talent is "raw" - she hasn't had that much training or on-stage experience. (People like Christine Aguilera went through incredible training as Mouseketeers.) So, I think Bianca needs to catch up in some ways. And I do wonder why there has been no news of her. There's so much more to singing success than just talent & confidence. Could Bianca be just another one-hit wonder....?
Actually, for this particular rendition, that comment makes perfect sense. I think that some parts of her singing here are beautiful and "heartfelt", while other parts are screechy and affected.

Just curious: Who do you think sings really well? While this is not one of Bianca's best performances, sometimes it's a questions more of the listener's taste and preferences than the singer's abilities.

On this particular song she is a "mimic". She may not possess the individuality or flexibility that will make her a long lived star but the fact that an 11 year old child mimics Janis in both voice and movement so well is the amazing part. ..and you can call me stupid if you like. This is the first time that I have commented on a video on youtube. I would just like to point out to the people who said that it was great except for the awkward movements; she is imitating Joplin in that as well. Janis Joplin threw herself at the stage in the same manner. It is almost as if the young girl studied videos of Janis Joplin singing the song and copied the movements that she saw.
No idea why critics or "judges" were so critical of her. The voice is amazing. Yes, her movements were a little awkward, what did they expect? She's just a little girl!
Then again, you gotta learn to take harsh criticism if you want to make it.

I do disagree with your weighting of her talent. There aren't very many people in the world who have the talent to be able to imitate Janis Joplin so credibly. There's tons of raw talent beneath the imitation, but kind of like you said, the imitation gets in the way of showing the talent.
I think Janis will wink from heaven from heaven to Bianca because she recorgnizes she is well represented in this cover...THAT GOOD. Vastly underrated by the judges.
I really couldn't figure out where the judges were coming from on this one - except the screechy part really was kind of screechy. It almost seemed like the judges didn't like an 11-year-old girl singing such a "mature" song - too sexy, perhaps? Also, I thought Bianca's body movements at times were awkward. But still, the rest of the rendition was beyond good if not brilliant.
She's certainly not Janis Joplin. It's like Simon Cowell said when he signed her to Sony records - Bianca is "potentially" one of the best singers he's ever heard. She's incredibly talented, but needs a lot of polishing to make her truly a world-class singer. Anyone expecting her to sound exactly like an adult with years of singing behind her needs to remember that she's just 11-12 years old here.

She is as close to a Janis reincarnate as you'll ever see. Part of Bianca's choice to sing this song is to show her admiration of a special talent......and....she nailed it!
The first Bianca Ryan vid I saw was her audition for America's Got Talent, and I was blown away by the depth of her talent - but even in that performance (as here), there are some rough edges. That doesn't say she doesn't have immense talent, it just says she isn't as experienced as she will be. Her videos at YouTube are a mix of mostly unbelievable sound with a few minor glitches that, with time, will be polished away. Overall, her native ability is nothing short of astounding.
I dont think this is great. She sounds like she strains her vocal cords too much. I think because her voice is mature for her age, her parents took advantage of the fact that shes young with a strong voice, but if you imagine an adult with her voice, it's not great.
She did indeed push herself too far - or tried to do something (the screeching sound) that really doesn't suit her style. She does much better in other performances. What I find amazing is the parts of this performance that are good, where she's not pushing to hard. Not just good there, but superb. There's a very notable difference between Janis and Erma and Bianca's style resembles Janis more.

binaca is really a good singer......she sings high notes like the other singer but i think her style of singing is kinda old...old ways.... and her pronunciation of the songs is not clear....but she has a good voice

Well. "MagandaPhilippines", the reason she sounds like that is because she is doing the song the same way Janis would have done it. Miss Joplin was not always easy to understand and she sometimes slurred her words. Bianca is staying "true to form" here and doing a real good impersonation of Janis Joplin, and having fun while she is doing it. Not bad for an eleven year old, huh??!!

It always makes me wonder what these people are talking about I can clearly understand everything Bianca's singing,there are other super stars that I've never been able to figure out without looking up the lyrics,Elton John for one If it weren't for the computer I would have never known what the hell he was sing about,even with it I still sometimes wonder

I can see how my comment could be misinterpreted. Not ref'ing to this particular appearance - but other appearances. Sneaker boots, odd swath pulled back over the top hairstyle she's been sporting. She's got pretty hair, it isn't always styled flatteringly.

She was 12 and trying to win a talent contest. Given what I've learned about how AGT is run, they likely told her to do those songs. The goal was to quickly play to her strengths in a way that a mass audience would digest. The fact that she won would seem to bear out they were good song choices.

I looked for some early videos of Celine. The quality of the videos made it difficult to judge voice quality, but overall, early Celine had issues similar to Bianca's - over-stressing her voice, some off-tune notes, etc. There's no doubt Bianca needs to study, train, and develop her talent, but so did Celine.

She is quite busy and is trying to keep up with her schoolwork and spend time with her family and friends. I can't imagine what it must be like trying to keep up with all of that at the young age of 14.

I looked at her site, saw that she was doing some performances about every 3 months. The engagements listed on the left of the home page don't have a year associated with them, so could have been in 06 or 07. She is just 14, I know, and seems to have lots of ambition, so I haven't written her off at all. I'd be more interested in hearing what she's doing to get more training. Celine Dion was a brilliant young star, then went through a long dry spell, then went super-nova.

I don't agree with your assessment of her talent to confidence ratio, but sometimes confidence, along with the will to do something, is enough to get the job done. She had fun while doing this hard song. Most of the time having a lot of confidence means that you are certain you have the resources to achieve something special. I met a pro football player once who thought that he didn't have any special talent, but he had a lot of confidence in his abilities. His team won the Super Bowl that year.

I think Bianca has a tremendous amount of confidence, and a huge amount of talent - but much of her talent is "raw" - she hasn't had that much training or on-stage experience. (People like Christine Aguilera went through incredible training as Mouseketeers.) So, I think Bianca needs to catch up in some ways. And I do wonder why there has been no news of her. There's so much more to singing success than just talent & confidence. Could Bianca be just another one-hit wonder....?

Actually, for this particular rendition, that comment makes perfect sense. I think that some parts of her singing here are beautiful and "heartfelt", while other parts are screechy and affected.

Just curious: Who do you think sings really well? While this is not one of Bianca's best performances, sometimes it's a questions more of the listener's taste and preferences than the singer's abilities.
Also, take a listen to Bianca doing "I believe I Can Fly" on the Today Show. (I don't have a link for you.)

On this particular song she is a "mimic". She may not possess the individuality or flexibility that will make her a long lived star but the fact that an 11 year old child mimics Janis in both voice and movement so well is the amazing part. ..and you can call me stupid if you like. This is the first time that I have commented on a video on youtube. I would just like to point out to the people who said that it was great except for the awkward movements; she is imitating Joplin in that as well. Janis Joplin threw herself at the stage in the same manner. It is almost as if the young girl studied videos of Janis Joplin singing the song and copied the movements that she saw.

No idea why critics or "judges" were so critical of her. The voice is amazing. Yes, her movements were a little awkward, what did they expect? She's just a little girl!
Then again, you gotta learn to take harsh criticism if you want to make it.
I really hope this girl makes it, and I hope she doesn't water herself down to be "pop"
I want to hear her sing her heart out. That's the whole appeal.

An excellent point - it makes it more clear to me now why the judges reacted so negatively to this performance.
I do disagree with your weighting of her talent. There aren't very many people in the world who have the talent to be able to imitate Janis Joplin so credibly. There's tons of raw talent beneath the imitation, but kind of like you said, the imitation gets in the way of showing the talent.

I really couldn't figure out where the judges were coming from on this one - except the screechy part really was kind of screechy. It almost seemed like the judges didn't like an 11-year-old girl singing such a "mature" song - too sexy, perhaps? Also, I thought Bianca's body movements at times were awkward. But still, the rest of the rendition was beyond good if not brilliant.

She's certainly not Janis Joplin. It's like Simon Cowell said when he signed her to Sony records - Bianca is "potentially" one of the best singers he's ever heard. She's incredibly talented, but needs a lot of polishing to make her truly a world-class singer. Anyone expecting her to sound exactly like an adult with years of singing behind her needs to remember that she's just 11-12 years old here.

The first Bianca Ryan vid I saw was her audition for America's Got Talent, and I was blown away by the depth of her talent - but even in that performance (as here), there are some rough edges. That doesn't say she doesn't have immense talent, it just says she isn't as experienced as she will be. Her videos at YouTube are a mix of mostly unbelievable sound with a few minor glitches that, with time, will be polished away. Overall, her native ability is nothing short of astounding.

I dont think this is great. She sounds like she strains her vocal cords too much. I think because her voice is mature for her age, her parents took advantage of the fact that shes young with a strong voice, but if you imagine an adult with her voice, it's not great.

She did indeed push herself too far - or tried to do something (the screeching sound) that really doesn't suit her style. She does much better in other performances. What I find amazing is the parts of this performance that are good, where she's not pushing to hard. Not just good there, but superb.
