You must see the DVD "Tosca: I Live For Art". The great sopranos discuss their careers. They discuss the famous tenors that they performed with. When they got to Di Stefano their face would light up, they said only Di Stefano could give them the 'shivers'.
I agree 100% 10oppera! In those days a 'man' was supposed to be tough, to give it his 'all', they smoked, they drank, and they didn't wear work gloves for fear of a callous. Critics are journalism majors who can't do anything but write criticism I'm glad he gave it his 'all' and didn't hold back, we are luck to have his music.
I'm often reluctant to say "the greatest" because voices are often just different. That said, has there every been a great, sweeter, more flawless lyric voice than this? The best "Che Gelida Manina" on record. Bravo, DiStefano: you are alone.
Ia am a tenor,i know every technival detail there is!But I do not fuckin care,if he did not have the best technique in the world!I do not care if his passagio was too open!It does not matter if he lost his voice. What i do care, is that his voice, his Charisma, his passionata was all that counts. He gave us more than anyone else,he gave it all,his voice too.His voice came straight from his heart, thats it...that is the thing music is made for,to enjoy it!Every other explanation is unrelevant.!

Its good to see an actual tenor say this!
That is just how di Stefano feels and sounds to me, too.
As if he knew he was sacrificing his voice, in the long term, but was willing to do that, to get the most beautiful sound a man could make.
