  • subtitles would have helped

  • Spear guy: Look, mine is bigger than yours, ha ha!

  • I loved 3:51... That's skill there.

  • the best scene is where the one samurai cuts the others neck in about 6:48 :D

  • Brilliant!

  • Last scene... holy shit.

  • Love this film. Does anyone know how I can get my hands on the original short story it's from?

  • 0:22 most epic warcry ever

  • is this more like aikido technique?

  • So many people ignore the use of the mune. Although this is a movie, what a great display of heiho.

  • COOL......

  • I love this because they used actual martial artists rather than a bunch of show-offy actors that know nothing about "discipline".

  • this is a fantastic film, choreographer is otake risuke.........well they dont come any better than that.........tenshin shoden katori shinto ryu. otake is without a doubt the best ive seen

  • He does not cut em right? or that style holds the sword inverted? and cuts?

    somebody please explain

  • He's not cutting them. Thats why they get back up and keep fighting. He's holding his sword that way so that the blade isn't contacting them when he hits.

  • Thanx amigo!!

  • @MarioGiMo its just how he uses a sword to not kill basicly

  • Tsuji Gettan sword school

  • great

  • this is great but a lot more people could enjoy this better with english subs

  • LOL the yari part was so funny! He fell right into the bushes lmao!

  • This is a pretty cool scene, but the abscene of music is very jarring for me. Music usually sets the tone of a scene in a movie. Here there is no music and the scene kind of suffers.

  • The Yari fight scene was indeed directed by Otake Sensei (my teacher). He has the full script of that scene (as shown to me) and some very special pictures made in the Dojo (Japan). He also told me how he teached the main actor the technics. Wonderful story & movie.5 starts !

  • Sweet! *****!

  • Yari fight is definitely based on Katori Shinto Ryu with little modification. But it's no suprise since Otake Risuke is mentioned in the credits.

More Mugai Ryu as i remember was in the beginning of the movie, with iaijutsu.

  • Thanks for posting, I must now purchase this movie, this man is intense and relaxed, just some of the esoteric elements of Iaido that I have noticed.

    Man this is good.

  • This guy gives a very good name to Mugai Ryu Iaido

  • IT was convenient how they attacked him one by one and the beginning of the last clip there, but still, this is got to be the most realistic katana battle I've ever seen.

  • Japanese politeness man, gotta love it.

  • one of the greatest countrys Japan and is my favorite country to!

  • that scene with him fighting the guy with the Yari was awesome!

  • Very great fights and cool movie ! ^^

  • 凄いですよ!

  • Seems more like Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu, which is taught by Otake Risuke and Yoshio Sugino.

  • i'm not sure what you are comparing it to ("seems more like") but yes it is Katori Shinto Ryu. Otake Ritsuke is credited in the movie.

  • The spear guy is, yeah. The others, not so much.

  • @looking4fun18

Just out of curiosity, which parts of the above video reminded you of TSKSR? Any particular scenes or characters?

  • The the Daimyo testing Ihei with the live spear (4m 15s - 5m 30s )in this motion picture was Mifune Toshiro's son, Mifune Shiro.

  • Yes, that's right.

  • love the way he miss placed the way to sword was around... for like 30 secs easy mistake to make well forgiven overall good sword work.

  • His sword is meant to be turned around. He does not want to kill them at first.

  • ohh that makes alot of sence thanks

  • they do that a lot in the television samurai dramas too. kind of silly when two guys have reversed swords and they are fighting twenty guys that are trying to kill them...

  • lol yea hes 1 brave nutter =)

  • The main character in Dora Heita does the same. The point is hardly that it's "silly" but that these people go out of their way not to kill if they see an alternative.

  • i don't think it's silly in the context of this movie but in shows like Mito Komon, i think it's silly!!!

  • I don't know the TV shows you're referring to, but in the examples I gave it's done because the character is like that. Mind you, I wouldn't like to be whacked with the blunt edge of a katana. It must hurt like hell.

  • @textthing why is it silly not to kill? isnt it silly to kill when you dont have to?

  • I love this character. He is at once the most gentle and most badass grandpa ever.

  • This video is great. Its almost like somebody managed to bring a camera back in time and record everything.

  • Really nice video... Gives the impression of Aikido sometimes, by the ability to avoid attacks. I would be very interested in finding the movie

  • It's from one of Kurosawa's last screenplays, and was made shortly after his death.

  • To be clear: It's far better than I have seen in most movies.

  • Great movie! Finally some choreografics that are right. Besides some people, having a good ma-ai, but keep waiting until the main character is ready for them.

  • i like your word 'choreografics' ! well it can't be perfect, it is still just a movie but it's definitely in my top 2 fight scenes.

  • Anyone know where I can find this film?

  • Try ordering from japan..maybe yahoo japan or something. Not on region one as of yet...:-( I dont have a multi region player so havent even bothered. I would have hoped Criterion would have picked this one up by now...if it were only so simple. b e a u t i f u l film!

  • As I understand, Otake-sensei is the Shihan of TSKSR. If he is the fight choreographer, how is the swordplay Mugai Ryu? What is the difference between sword and fight choreography? Are the two sword choreographers exponents of Mugai Ryu?

Excellent video by the way. I wish there were more movies with this sort of choreography.

  • Actually nevermind. I can see katori shinto ryu in that soujutsu/yari/spear segment.

  • Well the solo kata that the main character does are supposed to be from MR and his sensei mentioned and flashbacked to is Tsuji Gettan. The credits make a distinction between the two and list the respective people and their arts.

  • The solo kata performed are standard Mugairyu iaijutsu kata, adopted into Mugairyu from Jikyoryu years after Tsuji Gettan's death.

The noto (sheathing of the sword) is not Mugairyu. Okamoto Yoshiharu is the 15th soke of Mugairyu.

  • Okamoto Yoshiharu is the 15th Soke of M R. The solo kata practiced by the main character in the beginning of the actual movie are of standard M R iai kata.

  • @nii87 get a life

  • @nii87

In fact it's quite simple: one word is missed, _spear_ fight choreographer is Otake Ritsuke, as Mugai-ryu does not teach spear. All the other fights seem to be Mugai-ryu for the main character and Sinto-ryu for his opponents.

  • Cool. @_@

  • That is it :) excellent perfect
