I think it's really awesome that you got to see a whale shark, not many people say they can!
But I agree with abbearman, You shouldnt be touching them..the skin is about 4 inches thick but it could become infected if the mucus covering is broken, so touching them is highly disscouraged and not recommended.
There are not that many sightings in the Gulf of Mexico in retrospect. To my knowledge it is a very rare occurrence for them to be so close to shore as well. It was fun!
