Bugsy's rude, but, I agree {winces}. This a little too on the beat, and syncopated, swing is hard to explain. If I may, rhythmically, this is what happened when disco copied funk - it lost it's behind the beat edge and fizzled out, but great funk lives (aka Prince). I've come to realize that the only reason I was indifferent to Orleans music is because I'd only heard so-so Cajun. "Treme" schools me weekly, I'm still learning. Prof Longhair, 'birth Brass, Trombone Shorty, etc.
Case if the whites? WTF are you talkin about. This video has horrible sound quality, but Marcia Ball grew up on the Louisiana/Texas border and is legendary in Austin and New Orleans. Look up her cover of "Louisiana 1927" or really any decent sound recording and you will see what I mean. She is the real deal. Go crawl back in your ignorant cave.
Racism always prys itself into everything. Music is music. Its meant for all colors and ages. Not to segregate by color. I'm just glad we have music in our lives to express ourselves and celebrate life. Please, Get over the race thing. I love the blues. I'm white. I love all the black musicians and singers right along with the other races and nationalities. If people put as much into helping one another as they do cutting each other down. We would be just fine. Think about it. Love to all.
Yea, so I guess Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, Rush, Led Zepllin, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Madonna, and Stevie Ray Vaughn all have a case of The Whites too. It must not be that bad then.
Anybody, regardless of color can play music if they practice, anybody regardless of color, ethnicity, or race can write books about, direct films about or make art for and about ethic groups and races other than their own. The Spike Lee thing about Paul Simon is and was bullshit. Wake up, (some)dark skinned people (see the posts below) the world isn't swallowing your bullshit anymore.
case of "the whites" - oh man, I cannot believe a comment like that!! You have a serious problem and issues. I'd suggest either finding a therapist or going to a Marcia Ball show.
no amount of brainwashing by a therapist could make me forget the sounds of Guitar Slim, Sly Stone, Aretha Franklin, Hank Ballard, James Brown, Eubie Blake, The dixie Hummingbirds, Jackie Brenston, Ike Turner, Ray Charles, Big momma Thorton, Leadbelly, Cleophus Robinson, Wynonnie Harris, Jimmy Liggins, bo diddly, john Lee Hooker....
after hearing the music mentioned, how could marcia ball be anything but "white"?
If I have to explain that to you, you'll never get it. Don't worry about it. Just go watch some Captain and Tennile videos and you should be able to understand what I'm talking about.
They were:
the King and Queen of the Whites.
If by then you still fail to understand the "Whites" ...
...Just start singing along and pretend we never had this conversation
Marcia's website has her bio " Born in Orange, Texas, in 1949...grew up in the small town of Vinton, Louisiana, right across the border from Texas...1970 set out for San Francisco...Her car broke down in Austin, Texas, and while waiting for repairs, she fell in love with the city and decided to stay..."
Marcia and her band turn in three hour sets with just one break. Zinnington, you need to be hip before you can judge others that know the meaning of the word. She has the best band and the finest performer I have seen. I would recommend "Presumed Innocent" and "Peace, Love, and BBQ" as starter albums. I think you will see what I mean. Cheers....
About 20 years or so ago, Marcia Ball did a PSA for the "Don't Mess With Texas" campaign, and I had an immediate crush on her. See how her leg bounces back and forth? When she's on a regular piano, she taps the leg of the piano with her foot as she plays. She was wearing a short red dress in the PSA and was quite a hottie back then (not that she looks bad now).
Ive recently been to Austin and was lucky enough to see Marcia Ball at Antones, and it was a night i will never forget, Antones 23rd June 2007, highlight of my 10 days in Austin. Thanks Marcia.
and i thought we tore it up pretty good and the crowd was havin fun.
well, when marcia started, the first 30 seconds into it, the crowd forgot all about us.
then in the sons of hermann hall a few years later don was havin a terrible time playin with a headache, i turned him on to B.C. POWDERS, and in 10 minutes he was back strong. i love you guys.
Marcia Ball is my favorite performer. I go to her performances whenever I can. I can't wait to go on the Delbert McClinton cruise next year and spend a week listening to Marcia and her friends!

I saw Marcia @ Lafayette Square in New Orleans, she was great. She is a dedicated musician, tours contiually and is a great supporter of New Orlenas, it's music & culture!
An amazing talent. I remember a few years ago, I think it was Rolling Stone that reviewed one of her new releases, might have been the one with this song. They called her singing average, and her piano playing adequate. Never read that rag since then, Marcia is always gonna be in my top ten.

Marcia Ball reminds me of what it would have been like if my Junior High School Music Teacher tried to get hip. LOL.

Great clip with the added bonus of a great performance from Pat Boyack on guitar.
