Agreed. I'm a Islander Fan from way back before they ever won those cups. Gillies was as tough as they come and he was not a dirty player at all. Fighting was something he did only when he had too. Defending a teammate was usually the reason. Every once in a while some young punk would want to make a name for himself and show the league how tough he was so he'd take Gillies on. It always ended badly for that young upstart.

Gillies was the single scariest hockey player ever. In 1980 he smashed the hell out of the Bruins by HIMSELF in the first round of the playoffs. The so-called "toughest team ever" got carted off to a hospital one by one by the big man.

Not really true. In fact, Gillies had a high number of penalty minutes in the minors before getting called up.
His role, because of his presence, was to protect his teammates, but he was really not a true enforcer. He never had over 100 minutes in a single year.
In the NHL, he was the true first power forward, in that he could fight very well, score goals and was a beast in front of the net.
When Gillies played for the Regina Pats he was the left winger on a line with Denis Sobchuck and another player, both of whom scored a ton of goals. A big part of his job was to protect them, which he had to often especially since Denis like you like to shoot his mouth off a-lot.
Gillies never joined the Trottier, Bossy line(trio grande) on the norm until the 1979-80 season. Arbour always had Gillies on a line with Billy Harris.

Fight almost reminds me of when Rangers Goal tender Dan Cloutier was beating the shit out of Islanders goalie, Tommy Salo. And i think the fight between George Mcphee of the Rangers and Dave Langevin (who was an Isles Defense man) was way too brutal to be put on any website. I never said i was happy about it. All i said was this clip reminds me of that incident. That i saw live. This Clarke Gillies video was before i was interested in hockey. I wouldn't of know about it, if i didn't see it on here. But...Cloutier did get involved because Salo decided too. If he knows he's soft...either stay out of it (too avoid a beat down) or get involved and take your lumps. He was the third man in and depending on ones opinion, it could be regarded as a noble act or a stupid one.

Not really true. In fact, Gillies had a high number of penalty minutes in the minors before getting called up.
His role, because of his presence, was to protect his teammates, but he was really not a true enforcer. He never had over 100 minutes in a single year.
In the NHL, he was the true first power forward, in that he could fight very well, score goals and was a beast in front of the net.

Hospodar was one of the all-time dirty cheapshot artists, but when you saw him interviewed off the ice seemed like the nicest guy. I saw a game where a player (I think Mark Napier, no tough guy fighter) was just skating by him and Hospodar cross checked him in the mouth & knocked out half his teeth.
I remember this game. There was a lot of pre-game talk that the Isles were gonna get Hospodar because of earlier incidents, and sure enough they did. It was hockey justice.
