Wow I never associated Brent M. with a distorted Eric Johnson Esque tone. Its actually pretty cool to hear him do - I bet he still maintains his clean chicken pickin chops too......
I just got Brent's Smokin' Section and other than the little clip off of the end of this video, it's not that country. It's pretty jazzy up until that point. Really nice but I would also like to have an album that is more like "hot wired".
@alanQ119 Not sure. I work with him. He has been a good friend for years. I knew he had a keeley on his studio board. But neither him nor I particularly like them. I use a saffron squeeze I got years ago
@alanQ119 Saffron is tough to get. I don't think the Way Huge guy is making them. But it was one of the smoothest I've ever played through. I personally like the Keeley. Very nice pedal
Trucks is great, Brent is great. We are not talking about Mick mars and Ce Ce deville. Both of these Musicians are a strong part to shaping the music world.

i dont care who derek trucks is if i see a guitarist who impresses me i will say so brent mason doesnt impress me much if you new who i was you wouldnt be insulting my musical intellegence or playing, if you want a musical knowledge contest fire away
and its not like Brent Mason is indisputably one of the best guitarists alive, as in, its not like hes the top studio guitarist around nowadays or anything.
and its not like derek trucks got handed the torch by Warren Haynes himself or anything.
youre right, YOU know better, because you know how to strum basic chords.
Harryballswhatever,... When You've been recorded more than any other guitarist in the History of the fricken world, please... I want to be the first to know. You get real.
Ha good one. If only you had any idea who "Derek Trucks" was... And I'm somewhat impressed you recognized the general key he was playing in, just maybe do a little research before criticizing the best players in the world next time. :/
Well done man! If Brent Mason doesn't impress you, you are dead or completely stupid. I have a bunch of instructional videos, and his is among the scariest. If you knew who I was..........what an inbred.
Brian, should this hot wired pedal sound good in a tsl 100 marshall. 4 power tubes and 4 preamp tube setup? in the clean channel. Thats what i have now. i just bought the hotwired, well my gal, she bought it for me for xmas. Dyin to hear it on xmas day?
@crobins333 Because the producers/artists are so insistant on a type of sound (and it really could be any sound), the session musicians have to be prepared for any request and be able to get the sounds the producers/artists require. It is all about versatility these days, any sound at any time...
@wampcat ok thanks i thought you might say something similar actually. curse of modern music i suppose. personally i think those big rigs are the perfect way to strip the soul from someone's playing!
@wampcat But going straight into your amp has a certain kind of sound; some like it, some don't. It's not better, just different. If you love the sound of delay, or a good overdrive pedal then who the hell can tell you you're wrong? Personally, I hate the sound of most amp overdrives; just way too dirty. But plug a good transparent overdrive into a good clean and you're talkin. It's about doing what sounds great to you, what inspires you, not following some elitist rule that "simple is better".
you know more than us brian but i know several years ago that was the case. a twin in a showman case! nashville lends to more raw amps sounds now more than ever.i suspect the rack hardly ever gets used.
he had a twin amp put in a showman head. alot of those heads are loaded down to thd hotplates and and run through his effects rack. nashville has changed to straight amp sonds now. the rack stuff is almost taboo. just a phase. it will come back around to rack shit. just watch and see!
actually no... I put that system together for him. The hotplates aren't even hooked up (removed since then). Some guys use racks still (even brent - he does have a preamp, delay, and chorus rack mount available in case he ever needs that sound) but the music and producer depict what equipment is needed by the desired sound. That's an authentic showman head too, I promise you. :)
@wampcat Thats a hell of a system to put together, I just play in a bar band and some stadium gigs with a tribute band, but I use a switching system with axess electronics as the buffers, how do you get all those amps to run safely
Ever since i heard Alan Jacksons "I'm in love w/ ya baby, but I don't even know your name" or whatever, I was blown away by the lead work, only to come to know it is Brent Mason in all his glory...wow..smokin stuff..
Got the chance to see Brent play recently and meet and talk to him afterwards. I'm very happy to say that besides being one of the finest guitar players on the planet, he's also one of the most down to earth and humble guys you could ever meet.
Hey jazzguitar33, are you some kind of idiot or something? Brent Mason overrated? I'd love to see you try to keep up with him. How about you come back and tell how bad Brent Mason is once you've played on a few top-selling albums. Mason is one of the msot versatile out there. The guy plays every style imagineable. Can you?
hey brian. whats up man. i signed up for the podcast here awhile back. im a big fan of brent and brents tone{who isnt LOL) i play alot on broadway in nashville whenever im not at school.we just got home from there actually. are you based out of nashville?
Perhaps one of the most versatile, with chops to spare. Best? What day is it? Who's judging? Now if he would just get more of his stuff out in public. Skip the front men, just play. I don't want to listen so much to Alan Jackson or any of that crowd, just Brent and his crew...

That drives me wild that he uses the delay instead of Chorus. I always thought he was using thick chorus on Alan's early stuff.

There was a time when the the only effect the guitar players in Nashville used between the guitar and the amp was a cord....

yep - unfortunately the music industry has changed so much that that's not even a possiblity anymore. In the 80's guys were going direct in - no amp!

Fender made made a Twin reverb II in the 80's in head version under Paul Rivera when he ran the place

Its from an English manufacturer called Cornford - not sure which model.

its not English. amps there are Genz Benz, Matchless, Marshall, and the Fender all head. Then he has a few different speaker cabs.

The second delay setting you use is not a triplet, its a dotted eighth note. It sounds like a triplet, but over 4/4 time its not technically.
subinbar 4 years ago
It's actually a quarter note triplet. Three notes for two beats.
