Dog fights are the thing of the past; a good fighter now a day is all depends on their radar power and weapons system; after the korea and vietnam war; there is no such thing as Dog fights any more; majority of the aircraft shot down by anti aircraft missiles and gun from the ground or beyond visual missile or fire and forget stuffs; all the fancy movements are just a show

@powerofthroughts reason why there is no dog fights is absolute advantage of US air force over the quality of their enemies. US and its allies (mostly Israel) have been shooting down what? 2nd or 21/2 gen fighters with missiles (syria, iraq, egypt, serbia...) , which is easy since the older soviet jets don't even have decent radars to detect the lock-on until like 10 secs to impact. Even older 3rd gens like F-15 and F-16 are way harder to shoot down with missiles. ever heard of top gun?

China now has a side intake version of the Mig-21 w/ a nose cone, advanced radar, engines, avionics and a modified double delta wing. There are sufficient hard points for two medium & two short range AAM. Jl-9 is a good 3-generation plus fighter for most 3rd world countries. In a dogfight it can hold its own. However it could not survive a BVR missile attack from 4th/5th generation fighters. It has a limited endurance of only two hours. With afterburners on this reduces the range even more.

Good, philmonster, you and I are agreeded that a good, capable missile(AMRAAM) can bring down a fighter jet(any fighter jet). China possess a number of types medium range air to air missiles(equivalent to your AMRAAM) that can bring down F!6, F18, F15 even the F22 ,when given capable radar tracking supports.

After reading some comments, I am amazed at how delusional some people are. I would eat my hat if these could even think about competing with an F/A-18, of any model. An F/A-18A+ with a full load of AMRAAMs would eat a whole squadron of J-7s!

The upgraded J-7 is a good little warplane. this is the truth. armed with modern electronics and guided missiles. it can confront the F16, F18 and F15. Because they are reasonably priced. you could have more of them. dogfight capablity won't matter if you are outnumbered. J-7 can fly supersonic.

I don't know nearly anything about the J-7s..all I know is they are based off the Mig-21. Why do you say the J-7 is superior..I find that hard to belive.

The J-7 has been upgraded with modern aircraft technologies many times. Over FOUR DOZEN upgrades were made to the basic J-7.

Many nations are replacing their MiG-21s with J-7s.

Newer versions such as the J-7E, J-7G, J-7G2, etc, can match planes such as the F/A-18.

with the right amount of upgrades, any existing jet airframe can be turned into a formidible fighter. only the aerodynamics of the jet such as low manuverability would stay the same.

besides, the F18 sucks big time compared to the tomcat it replaced, low fuel capacity, short range, slower speed, small weapons capacity and NO AIM-54.

only thing thats got it going is advanced avionics, smaller size and manuverability.

I know with the right amount of upgrades anything can be made into a formidable fighter..but the Mig-21 is just getting old, the thing has terrible manuverabliity. I"m truely surpriesed the things can still match speeds of modern aircraft..so the only thing they'd be really any good for is recon and interception am I right? But the F-18 Super Hornet is compleatly designed from the original F-18.

Again, you are so wrong with regards to the manuverability of the MIG-21. US and Isreali pilots will tell you the exact opposite cos the last thing you want to do is engage a mig-21 at close range. it is a nasty bird. But thank God for BVR weapons.

ok why are you guys comparing j-7 with f-18. j-7 is defensive and f-18 carries out strike missions. j-7 could never match f-18's. but the latest ugraded f-7BG version is way superior than mig-21's.

The newest versions of the J-7 is described by pilots as their "little F-16". New J-7s have better performance than the F-18 and more features.
