Having come out to my parents 3 months ago I watched AreYouSurprised's video, and all of the emotions/uneasiness/awkardness/fear/determination came rushing back. I feel for that brave soldier, I wish him and his family all the best. I also hope he realizes how much he has helped us out here as YT and social media has helped him :D

Your work with Bryan as advocates for LGBT people is just as important a method of defending liberty as is serving in the military. @depfox I'm currently in Active Duty for the Army as a 68w and joined for the benefits(you could also transfer your G.I bill benefits to your kids or spouse, depends). My mom needed ALOT of convincing b/c she's anti-military, also because my brother was joining Marine Infantry and me the Army so a recruiter came over to talk to my mom and answered her questions. I would think ahead where you wanna be in the next 5 years.

I happen to know R.P. personaly, and have known that he was gay for a while. Now I never called him out on it because I have a cousin whom is also gay, and i can somewhat understand how hard that be to come out to everyone. Not real sure how i picked up on it, but never had a problem with it because thats just who he is. As for his girlfriend C.G. was more than likely never told for a reason, what that reason is i don't know.

Personally, I think a decision like that is Don't forget, Jay, that being the breadwinner for a family is also a way of both supporting your country and, being an out gay dad is a way of supporting the lgbt community. Jay, I just get the feeling that, it's not good timing. Whatever the opposite of premature is... It just seems like, you've had your time to serve, you did it well, now you have two beautiful children, you're married to the man of your dreams, you have a family, a home, all of the advocacy that you do...I would assume that you'd feel pretty content, and that going back in is sort of something you shouldn't do at this juncture in your life. Only if it is a deep, burning desire, should you do so.

I think it's a decission you both have to make together and if it's truly something Bryan don't want I think you should honor that request. Jay, I think it's a great idea that you want to serve again, but you currently have a family that the military won't recognize (unless both your children are biological). You won't be able to give them the benefits or receive the financial help with family separation that the military gives to those who do have families. There is still some battles to be won for equal benefits with the LGBT community, but if you fight from the civilian side, we'll do what we can on the inside - A Gay Army 1LT

Good luck to the two of you whatever decision you make. Military service is honourable, but families have to be considered, too. It has to be a choice that you make together and that you are both comfortable with.
It is nice to see people coming together and supporting Randy Phillip's coming out process. He has a done a great thing for all gays in the military, and he should be applauded for that.. He is a perfect example of why DADT had to be repealed.

@depfox I'm currently in Active Duty for the Army as a 68w and joined for the benefits(you could also transfer your G.I bill benefits to your kids or spouse, depends). My mom needed ALOT of convincing b/c she's anti-military, also because my brother was joining Marine Infantry and me the Army so a recruiter came over to talk to my mom and answered her questions. I would think ahead where you wanna be in the next 5 years.

I happen to know R.P. personaly, and have known that he was gay for a while. Now I never called him out on it because I have a cousin whom is also gay, and i can somewhat understand how hard that be to come out to everyone. Not real sure how i picked up on it, but never had a problem with it because thats just who he is. Jay, I just get the feeling that, it's not good timing. Whatever the opposite of premature is... It just seems like, you've had your time to serve, you did it well, now you have two beautiful children, you're married to the man of your dreams, you have a family, a home, all of the advocacy that you do...I would assume that you'd feel pretty content, and that going back in is sort of something you shouldn't do at this juncture in your life. Those opinions have nothing to do with being gay. I'm proud of AreYouSurprised. I teared up during his video because it reminded me of coming out to my mom and just I wish Jay the best if he reenlists. I hope we see more open soldiers :)

Excuse me if I'm misunderstanding, but I was under the impression that you were currently a member of the Sheriff's Department. Does that not already put you at risk? And putting your name and face out on YouTube could also cause you trouble from anyone who recognized either of you as gay men who are trying to make a difference.
Far be it from me to try to influence either of you, but those are the facts, yes? Life is a risk, you just have to decide the importance of your decisions.

Jay, I think it's a great idea that you want to serve again, but you currently have a family that the military won't recognize (unless both your children are biological). You won't be able to give them the benefits or receive the financial help with family separation that the military gives to those who do have families. There is still some battles to be won for equal benefits with the LGBT community, but if you fight from the civilian side, we'll do what we can on the inside - A Gay Army 1LT

Jay, I know you're very passionate about everything you do, but I am kind of with Bryan on this one. You're the main financial support of the family, and I don't think the military has thought through of prepared for the families of gay servicemen at all.
Also, Bryan's already going a bit mad from being housedad, don't leave him all alone! ;)
