Yes that's true. I could have heard him. A lot of others in my voice studio went to his recital but I didn't because I didn't like his records. So it is at least possible that had I gone I would have changed my mind.
Molto bello!! L'Elisir d'Amore mette alla prova le capacità vocali e teatrali degli interpreti più di qualunque altra opera. Valletti e Capecchi superano mirabilmente questa prova. Grazie. Roberto
Interesting to read the comments. I'm still such a neophyte, with only a decade of full-season opera attendance. I always enjoy all the viewpoints of those who know more than I. Thanks to all, and to you, Gabba02, for posting this! Personally, I like Mr. Valletti very much. Fun to see an older clip of a familiar scene.
Actually I think Valetti is just about the worst "major" tenor in this repertoire. The three times I've heard Elizir in a big house the Nemorinos were Kraus, Pavarotti, and Hadley. Today we have Alanga and Villazon in this part. A dozen or more years ago we had Carreras, Bergonzi, and Di Stefano. Soon we will have Beczala, Calleja and Schmunk.
I believe I said "a dozen or more" not a dozen. I thought it was clear that I meant Di Stefano, Carreras, and Bergonzi when they were in their respective primes. I apologize if I was confusing.
I think that you like Spinto/Dramatic or Lyric tenors with full bodied voices. This is the Nemorino that Donizetti dreamed of. A real Bel Canto tenor like Valletti. We all like Del Monaco's Otello or Franco Corelli's Calaf or Di Stefano's Duca. But it is obvious that Valletti's Nemorino is unique and cannot be rivalled: Maybe Schipa(his teacher)...
...who sang one of the best Una Furtiva lagrima's ever. Valletti is from the times that singers rule the indusrty, not the times that industry rules the singers! Because there were more solid singers.Valletti per sempre!
True, but even in Valleti's core repertoire like Don Giovanni and Barber he is just about the worst major tenor on records in my opinion. I have always loved Simoneau's voice and style in Mozart and he is hardly a Spinto/Dramatic. He is miles better than Valetti. Similarly I have recordings of every Rossini tenor for the last century. With the possible exception of Matteuzzi and Morino, Valetti's the worst on records.
I have no idea what your beef is with Valetti's voice, but his sound is magnificent and well produced. There are much worse tenors on record, and Valetti is by no means a bad tenor. He wasn't a lirico-leggiero, he was a lirico voice. A lirico-leggiero voice is Juan Diego Florez, or Schipa. Valetti's voice has more warmth in presentation, and more depth in the middle voice. Simoneau is incredibly boring compared to Valetti.
Valetti retired and became a very successful business man. He was no dummy. My voice teacher loved him but I never did - still don't.
Valetti had an RCA recording contract. He did Octavio with Siepi. His competitors on London and Angel were Simoneau and Dermota, both of whom were better. He also recorded Almaviva for RCA. His competitors were Alva and Benelli, both of whom were better. More recently Bruce Ford is also much better.
OK Kids- My comment is: The first time i heard Valletti "live" at the old Met. i couldn't believe what i was hearing. I thought that was the most beautiful voice i ever heard. It floated way up to the family circle. Unbelievable!! Somehow his recordings, though good- don't capture the "live" sound.
Ah, Valletti--in an era of great Mozart tenors he was still my favorite Don Ottavio. "An [Italian-] American Master"--too bad he didn't record more. A real lirico-spinto tenor!
MrGuizot... I share the same ideas about Valletti... Best Nemorino and Ottavio ever... Which recordings do you have any other than ottavio, elvino, alfredo, nemorino, ernesto???
Didn't he record a "Barbiere"? I have this vague recollection of a 50's era RCA or London recording poss. w/ de los Angeles. But none additional in my personal record/CD collection. Also, Opera News did an article on him recently, if you haven't seen it already.
I would have loved to hear him live!

The voice is extremely graceful and there is full control of the vocal apparatus. This is true artistry.

Il grande baritono si chiama Renato Capecchi non Roberto. Fantastici tutti e due!!

I love CV's sympathetic character like a deer in the headlights. The singing is so delightful and Capecchi is another delight.

Bellissimo duetto.

Wonderful singing from both. I love watching these old productions. They're fun. Cesare Valletti is one of my favorite tenors.

All of these men were/are better that Valletti.

A dozen years ago di Stefano was 74, Bergonzi 71 and Carreras was declined.
All listed above are tenori lirici or even lirico-drammatici while Valletti was an excellent lirico-leggero.
