  • hey i have a sony vaio vgn-fj1s, with intel gma 900, i think it uses the opengl 1.4, would it run with all effects in os, perfectly?

  • @Airezful i mean the 3d animations

  • @Airezful should be fine. according to google search

  • Am I the only one who prefers GNOME over Unity?

  • @AtomMp3 i like gnome too.. thats why im using UBuntu11.10 gnome desktop!

  • 11.10 lags worse than 11.04 IMO

    or what iexpereinced

  • I have a intel core 2 duo

4gb ram will it work good?

  • @ExpertCMX perfect :Try live cd first to make sure everything works

  • @ExpertCMX I'm posting this from a Lenovo t60p with core 2 duo and 2GB of RAM. Everything works perfectly and its faster than my previous OS by quite a margin (Windows XP). You have nothing to worry about!

  • @jarroyo1031 Dude i think XP was the best OS ever made by Microsoft :D , oky guys, dont worry, i have a decent PC gear with technolgies like DDR 3, CUDA, Pixel Shader, Dual CPU, SATA ... etc and i did test many and do mean many drivers, codecs, programs ... etc Evreything work`t incredible so far and the best thing is Ubuntu 11.10 its a free software

  • wow nice wallpaper :)

  • @KeepSharing31 Templo de Debod, Madrid. At first glance I know what it is and where it is ;)

  • tree tree tree!

No wonder the irish economy's in tatters.

  • I have a problem that's driving me insane. I just installed 11.10, but it simply looks like crap. The login screen is a flat pink, and the UI just looks outdated - the best way to describe it is Windows 2000. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks

  • New Ubuntu seems like a mashup of Windows 7 and OS X

  • hey I've just installed Ubuntu I haven't used a linux based OS before should I start learning how linux kernel works ?

  • @Mykonos900 I'd learn some basic terminal commands, but I've been using Ubuntu for over a year and have never worried much about kernels at all.

  • @fallofshadows omg ! you ppl ever hear about a word ``progress`` ? why dont you use MS-DOS its also free !

  • Compiz seams like a hit or miss nowadays. Back under ubuntu8.04 it ran flawlessly but now i don't even dare to install in fear in fucks up the whole system(it done it multiple times). Well, i don't need those fancy effects anyway *sigh*

  • HOW CAN I GET CLEAR TOP PANEL LIKE YOURS ?

  • @7eoj Thanks it really worked !!!! i tried this stuff for about 3 hrs and whollaa it started working!!!!!! :D

  • is it safe to run compiz with intel i3 graphics accelerator?

  • @piezoelectron should be fine the i3 is a fancy name for the newer dual core processor.

  • @novelldesktop Is it okay for Dual Core? I have it.

  • bee careful installing compiz make sure your graphics card is supported

  • @novelldesktop is intel atom ok? (it seems to run well)

  • can i active compiz effect in virtualbox?

  • CompizConig didnt work for me,..... even after restarting and rebooting :(

  • How to get that wobbly effects dude????

  • @Ateeq72 Take your time with changing compiz settings, my advice would be click.wait. see if it worked and then carry on....IMO if you go all click happy youll get a crash/not work. This all depends on your machine though, yea!

To get compiz settings manager just use the software centre or open a terminal ctrl-alt-t and run:

    sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

to get extras (more crazy effects not in software centre) run

    sudo apt-get install compiz-plugins-extra

  • I have tried this ubuntu and ... i like it!!! Guys just give it chance!

  • Has anyone tried to run live ubuntu from a (persistent) usb3 stick ?

    What are performances ?

  • @quantum290 it depends on the quality of the usb drive speed quality i mean .

  • @novelldesktop

Of course it depends on the usb drive, i'm interested in concrete performances of concrete drives.

I hope someone who runs live usb3 can compare the speed to a usb2 drive.

After all the difference is supposed to be noticeable no matter of the drive model.

  • @quantum290 USB 2 is 30mbits per second, USB 3 is 50mbits per second. I use OCZ Rally2 USB 2.0 Flash Drive 30mbits per second just about good enough a little lag when running ubuntu from it.

  • @novelldesktop

usb3 is much faster than 50mbits/s.

I have one (Kingston DTU 16gb) which has 88mbytes (sequential read) and 62mbytes (sequential write) per second, that is 700 and 500 mbits/s.

Although it's much slower with small files (4kb: 5.3 and 8.3 MB/s) it is still a huge difference comparing to a usb2 stick i tested (0.1 MB/s write, with small files).

That's why i expect a great improvement in performances of live usb3 persistent ubuntu, if bootable usb3 is possible at all

  • i dont like the appearance

how do i change it to something more practical

    less effects

  • Cool US 64bit 11.10 rocks!!

  • How do you get those shaky effects on the windows when you move them around?

  • pasame tu wallpaper

    pass me your wallapaer please ( ;

  • I HATE 11.10. Im back on 10.10... My comp ain't FAST but it isn't exactly slow, though it does run on 32 bit. Can't wait until taxes come back next year to upgrade to a new comp. This version slows me down in an annoying way. Not too BAD, just aggravating. Oh, can't I switch where to close the screen? (left or right side)? Shit MSI mb, 3gb RAM, Athlon II 240x2, 2.81GHz processors, Nvidia geforce 6150se nForce 430.

  • @JesusChristisMuslim Yes mint 9 was the BEST os i ever used dont like the newer mint/ubuntu hate to say that i use windoz 7 now but miss mint9

  • Kubuntu 11.10 is much much better stopped using Ubuntu after v10.10 of Ubuntu. Ubuntu 10.10 Rocked, but the newer version made some unnecessary changes such as having icons on the left of the screen among many.

  • Irish accent is new to me! I really like it!

  • Madrid ^^

  • @imtanantoor RecordMyDesktop, great program.

  • pint pint pint pint pint pint pint pint pint. pint pint pint pint....Ohh! god now i need a beer.

  • OMG i love that dragging effect

  • how you recorded the screen please tell me the name of the software.

  • 4 pint 1 pint 7 pint.. and tank you again!

  • 4 pint 1 pint 7 pint

  • Funny thing: I use gnome (Unity off) and I can't make the compiz work (I have it installed, I turn on the features in configuration but they don't work)

Does that mean that in order to use Compiz I now have to get used to the inferior (it's inferior right now, though there is potential in it) Unity UI?

  • I can't get Compiz Settings Manager to launch

  • where do you get that wallaper from i will subscribe if you tell me :D

  • Love ubuntu!

  • I was so unimpressed with the Unity desktop. It felt to me like change for the sake of change.

  • you sound eerily like Ed Byrne!

  • @jasbk have been told that before

  • sempre a assapar com ele viva ou ubuntu

  • :S Do all Irish people pronounce gnome as "gu-nome" & nvidia as "na-vid-ee-ah" like that?!?

  • @CrypticalK GNOME is actually supposed to be pronounced as guh-nome, and I am American.

  • Can somebody explain to my why Linux/ubuntu? I've heard that's a good sistem but whats the difference betwen Linux and Mac OS X, Windows 7/8?

  • @ota97 MacOS is made by Apple Inc. Windows 7 is made by Microsoft. Linux is made by many programmers not affiliated in a company. Windows 8 is not out yet.

  • @yetanotherperson1210 Dude I know all that you just said, i'm not stupid, but whats so special with Linux?

  • @ota97 Its free. You can get most distributions of Linux for free. It is also much more secure.

  • The Irish has one of the coolest accents in the world. Great review BTW. Ubuntu's coming along nicely indeed.

  • What are you using to record this? I've tried a few different apps, but they all turn out to suck...

  • @altjxx gtk record my desktop

  • I just dual-booted Windows 7 and Ubuntu and though Ubuntu is complicated, it's a lot faster than my Windows 7. Working on Triple Booting Windows 7, Ubuntu and OS X Snow Leopard. Anyone had any luck on triple booting?

  • Dumping 11k worth of Microsoft stock.... installed Ubuntu 11.10 last week.... Unbelievable!!!! This OS really surpasses Windows 7 for ease of use, stability, creativity and the WOW factor! Powerful stuff man!!! Switching over completely to open source...the way of the future!!!!

  • You're very Irish. Just thought I'd state the obvious.

  • Ubuntu is getting more detached. The out of the box experience it dreadful now. 2 years ago it had most of the software I needed. Now they have removed the majority of my favorites. And the interface is not useable if you work with files and folders a lot.

  • @JoelB3783 You hadn’t actually tried Unity.

  • @fitoschido I am using it right now. It is not for multitasking, I am a power user.

  • i want to ask a question.... in this video you have mention that you are using pci e graphic card, do you download the nvidia driver? or you just use what they call xserver nvidia?

  • @KLIA91 using a nvidia 6610XL pci16 graphics card and installed the additional drivers nvidia 173. type add in dash

  • @novelldesktop thanks.... one more thing i just installed this version of ubuntu yesterday. the problem is my wifi working fine yesterday. and this morning i can't connect to wifi, it's keep connecting and fail. hmm a ubuntu with no internet for me

  • @KLIA91 can you use the wired Internet instead, its hard to know what wrong i need more detail

  • lol same CPU as mine Q6600. Had it since late 2008 and it's still a great chip. the OS is amazing its just a shame I have to use so much windows only software :/

  • @Antimalwaregeek That is what Wine is for.

  • @DH1234561 Doesn't support the programs I use daily. Its a great OS just a shame I can't use it with my programs.

  • awesome video :D Ubuntu with unity is actually awesome! :)

  • tree pint zero pint zero pint eight :)

  • it just need a touch screen pc

  • "Linus Torvalds called GNOME 3 an 'unholy mess' and said that the user experience is unacceptable, adding that because of GNOME 3, he has ditched GNOME for Xfce. He said that Xfce is a step down from GNOME 2 — but a huge step up from GNOME 3."

  • Why the fuck don't i have the shut down icon on the top right of my screen? I have version 11.10, and the only way i get it to appear is if i switch user to "guest" and even when i chose shutdown after i go to guest it does nothing but go back to the switch user screen and request the password which it of course it doesn't need because i am "now" a guest so once i click on Login after i have tried to shutdown, it does exactly that!, then i am back square one.

  • @blade004

Yep, that's 1 of the many reasons I installed the Gnome Shell. Unity is great if you feel like learning a lot of new things, new places to find the old things you are used to, don't mind missing things (LoL), etc. But I want something that is Not flashy, etc... I want something that just works well and that's Gnome 2D for me.

  • Looks really cool... But i have some questions.

One - what about system requirements? I have a nine years old PC and i'm afraid the performance would be not good. Well, maybe that's stupid question, but i just want to know.

Two - unity is strange... unfamiliar. It's really better than normal gnome?

And three - should I change Lynx to Ocelot? Or better to replace xubuntu? Or maybe run it in VirtualBox (or something else)?

  • @EstelNoquelle make sure your the old pc has 1GB of ram DDR will do, Pentium 4 3.0 GHZ will run Ubuntu 11.10 make sure the graphics is supported. look at Ubuntu weekly news on Google. Type UWN on Google .

  • @novelldesktop it has 768MB of ram and Pentium IV 2.0GHz :)

But there's run xubuntu 10.04 and it workin' normally, but i don't like it.

But thank you for answer :)

  • nice background ...

  • Hahaha, "pint." Cheers.

  • can i have a link for wallpaper

  • I don't know if it's my laptop (dell inspiron 15r), me running wubi, or if Ubuntu 11.10 hates me...but I can't make any changes to compiz. Any suggestions?

  • mahahaha i have ubuntu 11.10 kernel 3.0.0-12-generic gnome 3.2.0

  • Hey, can you please tell me how did you personalize it?, like the "start" button and the notifications bar for example?

    Thanks.

  • Nice background, it's the Temple of Debod in Madrid.

  • 3 pint 3 pint 5 lol

  • a few tings jaaa?

  • mac ripoff but good!

  • So in 11.10 you can use the desktop cube with Unity? If so then AWESOME I love the cube!

  • it's like a fee MAC

  • It seems unity is now has no conflict with compiz...Good work :) enjoy the release

  • Wow... Ubuntu is so laggy and bloated. Look at how long it takes to close a window @0:40

Windows is so much faster nowadays. Especially Windows 8 - it BLAZES.

  • @livinglegend1187 I am using windows7 right now, and I am itching to put Ubuntu once more, because it is slow and drives me insane. You should realise it appears to be slow because 1)there is a heavy screen capture program running 2)this is not the final build of the operating system.

Check out elementary Luna if you want to talk about speed, lets see windows match that.

  • @livinglegend1187 but that could be a dated hardware issue...

  • @livinglegend1187 your out of your mind... Windowz does not even compare in terms of speed....I have both, and Windows is installed in a way better and newer PC. Windows is the bloated bullshit and Microsofts LEGIONS OF SHEEP will never break the chains and move onto the freedom of open source. continue to pay for sub-par because that is all your going to get from Microsloth. They had XP for 10 yrs and now a new OS every other year , sounds like someone is unsure where they are going. HACKS.

  • @Tylerdurdin1 No, YOU'RE out of your mind. I have both installed too and Ubuntu has become a POS. Windows 7 is blazing fast and Windows 8 is shaping to become way more faster (the beta was faster already).

Please tell me, what freedom do you have while using Ubuntu that you can't have on Windows?

  • @MrAnooxy To be fair, the only difference is the philosophy and personal opinion and philosophy.

  • @livinglegend1187 That is only because he has so many compiz features turned on his computer can't handle it it's not the OS but the Settings and the PC

  • ubuntu 11.10 looks much better :D and it's gnome 3, double win w00t

  • Hi Sean =P

  • Comment removed

  • it does have a lot of osx touches... i like it!

  • ubuntu works on any configuration thats why it is the best and i cant wait for the full version to come out i use windows an mac on my macbook and i think ubuntu is way better

  • I like ubuntu becouse of the classic :D

  • I'm using Ubuntu 10.10, Firefox 6.0.2 Stable and have joined the Youtube HTML5 test, this video plays because its in flash, I'm looking for WebM containers so I can post how it's not working. :shrugs:

  • so you still can't choose the unity panel position?

  • @Arverick88 you have always been able too, you just need ccsm (CompizConfig Settings Manager)

  • I guess I am one of the few people who rolled over to Unity and after a bit of growing pains accepted it as my new desktop environment. I for one cannot wait for these improvements I have 11.10 marked on my calendar. :)

  • What screen capture software are you using?

  • Ubuntu 11.10 looks beautiful.

I can't wait to make a review and use it.

Excellent review! You're the only Linux Users who hasn't made any negative comment about the latest changes for Ubuntu.

Love the accent, by the way!

  • @MicroHelper theres no point complaining, its a waste of energy. thank you for the comment

  • @novelldesktop really is uselessi use fluxbox or install gnome-panel am still on ubuntu 10.10 and will be for a while but might switch to mint or debiam

  • @novelldesktop I hated the death out of 11.04 because all the problems but there is no way I can possibly hate this one. Guess what is being installed? 11.10!!!

  • @TWILisawesome firefox is now on a rapid release development cycle, meaning a new version every few months. You won't really see any drastic changes between versions from now on, but it is changing.

  • Good looks ...........

  • Looks good. I gotta take another look at it

  • Personally, I'm a power user (I use keyboard to navigate and usually don't touch the mouse) and I find that Unity slows down my productivity. However, The eyecandy in Unity is quite appealing, especially the new dash. I'm an OpenBox user on ArchLinux, so I am able to navigate quickly.

Love the vids, keep up the good work, eat your vegetables, etc.

  • What happened to firefox 5?

  • There are lot thing that will gone wrong in the latest release of Ubutu. I mean the Ubuntu button in the left corner on the panel is now replaced with icon on dash, the new power cog (God damn what was wrong with the old beautiful button) and the stupid zooming and cube effects (they don't even hide the dash and the panel wtf) which looks in the same way even now.

  • @fakaras99 Yeah I don't understand why they would put the Ubuntu button on the dash and still leave that giant taskbar on top.

  • @AlphaFlockFunnyBiss touch screens needs a big button

  • @novelldesktop But honestly who would use this for touchscreens? You need a much better UI.

  • @AlphaFlockFunnyBiss ON a 10in touch screen would be nice, 10 hr battery life, ARM processor. some day maybe.

  • @novelldesktop Someday but the UI still has to improve otherwise it would just be like having Windows 7 on a tablet. That didn't turn out so well.
