How sweet the wind doth blow. Brings back memories. About 6, my Dad was having his studio built. Me & sis danced on the foundations to this song. I can even remember the dance we made up.
Yea, they do rather hurl themselves in, don't they?
They certainly do attack this one with some speed as if in a hurry to get it over! I think it needs treating less as a spirited march and more as a gentle folk tune with nuance and subtle pacing. The melody survives though and must have made for a nice outdoor show!
@danielwills93 what a load of nonsense. PIPE BAND marches are c. 108, compared to Mil band marches being 120, with the light div / gurkhas etc. going up towards 140 bpm. check your facts please
@s0700332 not a load of nonsense at all. They are FACTS...
English written marches are generally played at a steadier pace (100-110) where as French marches and American marches tend to be faster (120-140+) Are you denying those facts?
Those are very basic facts for describing how different countries interpret music' tempo.
I wasn't watching the monitor when the playlist changed to this song. I actually wondered, "This list is about Vaughn Williams, so why does it sound a bit Chinese?"
A bit to fast for my liking, but nevertheless a masterful performance. Also, I don't think that there is a ritardando at the end, possibly in your arrangement it was written in, but we have the original and there is no ritardando. I am principal tubist in my senior high school ensemble. I enjoyed the whole suite, particularly "My Bonny Boy", as there is a tuba feature and I find the melodies heartening. I also love the resolution of the final chord into a major F.
really the trumpet solo sounds like the christmas song " on the first day of christmas my true love gave to me" and the bum bum sounds like hi ho hi ho is home the way we go..lol but I still love this piece
It sounds like you have some horns playing on Trombone melodies. Then again, it's probably the lack of Trombones and the eight horns that you have that are getting my attention. I wish my band had more horns. We've only got two, but we play strong alone. What we need is a Tuba and two more trombones. :P
Nice job playing this song. I can't wait to play this in my concert in June.
what a pleasure to listen to such talented musicians. It is obviously from a civilised society, in britain the government have knocked down all the band stands and drunken yobs wou be throwing insults and beer cans instead of listening and then applauding. what has the uk come to!!!
Excellent articulation and tone, however there is a lack of low brass and the trumpet dynamics seem to be all over the place. The thing that really gets me is how the tempo is much to fast compared to how this song should be played and it shows because the conductor keeps having to snap his fingers. This song is categorized as classical, not a march.
I would disagree regarding the tempo. There is always a danger when playing marches in concert programs of "dragging". The tune is meant to be quite jaunty and with a bit of spring, Ive heard marches become lethargic too many times to care. It could go a fraction slower though.
great performance. what age/grade is this, about? You've got a well balanced band here. Was this recorded on a digital camera, because it's really very good if it is. Those mics on cameras aren't very good, hence all the comments below about not hearing things. Plus you were outside.
The low-brass fanfare in the trio should have been much fuller. I could barely hear the melody over the woodwinds. Good articulation throughout, however it was a bit too fast all the way through. I also felt percussion should have had a bigger role, as well as dynamics. It was almost always at about a mf.
I recently did this in my band..I gotta say, nice..However, there were a few things that could have been better. Dynamics. More contrast in there..Thats what makes music music. Also, there's a very melodic part in the trumpet 1 and 2 parts in the trio. I didn't hear it. And I must agree with ZJH89..Too fast. It seemed rushed the entire time.
This event showcased our collaboration with a secondary school (13-16yo) band, and obviously their group was much bigger than ours. They had performed first, which kinda explain those empty chairs...
Nice performance, although I have a few discrepancies with this interpretation. I think it could've used more dynamics, as the dynamics seemed rather static on the whole recording. Also, the performance seemed a tad too fast, but it ended up slowing down after the trio. Overall, nice performance. We're actually doing this piece in my band as well.
Too fast, but nicely played despite that. The trumpet soloist was especially good as well as consistent.

'a nice march tempo' depends on where you come from :P americans march speed is usually 120+ where british marches are usualy 100-110 bpm :D

good job for the most part. the thing that really stuck out to me was the dominent clarinet sound, but it was lovely nonetheless :)
ditto on the lack of sections comment and the tempo and dynamic comments...
would've loved to have heard what the entire group sounds like together!

A brave try but a tad too up-tempo methinks...only one of the original pieces is a march!

The first and third are both marches I got the music for it today.

Where's the low brass? Trombones couldn't be heard over the loud woodwinds. Good tone quality but no dynamic changes at all. Not bad.

The percussion is at mf because it is Many Feet away from the little mic on the camera(MF geddit?).
Well played and everybody had a good time no doubt.
