@Celtore1324 Yeah and they overlook the other guy who wears a different American brand of socks or watches Fox News or also is technically an intellectual as well otherwise he/she wouldn't talk about how they're economists or lawyers and such.
I'm learning latin and just learned "ad hominem". According to Wikipedia: "Ad hominem abuse (also called personal abuse or personal attacks) usually involves insulting or belittling one's opponent in order to invalidate his argument, ... This tactic is logically fallacious because insults and even true negative facts about the opponent's personal character have nothing to do with the logical merits of the opponent's arguments or assertions." Sound familiar?
The problem is that attack ads DO work. There have been studies made in the U.S. regarding attack ads showing that they're influential in changing public opinion. Look at this past election: the Conservatives ran ads implying Ignatieff was "too intellectual" and "not political enough" for Canada - never mind the fact that he had a world of experience and foreign training from traveling. That was part of the reason why the Cons won.

You people are fucked. Where was Mercer's high road speech when Martin did this? No where. How about Mercer he makes his living off making a mockery of people.
i have seen these ads their like ignatieuff was not in canada during some moments in our history i was like wow fail the conservatives must be down in the polls
I agree with this rant, but the only asshole attack ads are coming from the Conservative party, and only the conservative party. They are the ones playing dirty politics. I agree with staying unbiased, but the NeoCons have gone way too far for us not to call them on the dirty politics they are obviously using.
I will vote, I'll get involved, because now I have seen how fragile democracy is. If you don't get involved, you can't complain, and life is less enjoyable.
Smart ppl won't go into politics b/c the Liberals APPOINTED a guy as their leader that had NOTHING to do with the politics in this country for 30 years. Iggy has made political involvement a retirement plan for bored expatriates. I'm no fan of the Tories but, "He's not Harper," isn't a winning strategy. (Also, they passed over the other guy due to his HAVING political history how's that for encouraging political involvement?)
As far as "he's not Harper" goes - what is wrong with that? Even within the conservatives they are asking if Harper is the right guy when so many are chosing to vote for Liberal or NDP simply because it is not a vote for Harper
I prefer to choose a leader for the right reasons and not b/c there is no other choice.
Anyway, jkzl1008, I agree with you and that's Ignatieff's real weakness. He's a centre-right candidate so once Peter MacKay is running the Tories there will be no need for the guy who decided we needed his leadership.
The political parties in Canada have no interest in the this country, only their riding's.

How about a law that prohibits attack ads for the next election? Who do you think would agree to passing the bill and who would stall it forever?

Just wondering, but do you affiliate yourself with any party (Liberal or NDP)?
MauraAnastasia 2 years ago
I affiliate myself with whoever can get rid of Harper.

I just wondered, because I can't stand voting for any of them.

Funny how Mercer's work is considered comedy when it offers more constructive criticism than most serious shows.

I remember sitting in on the house of commons during a school trip and realising that they all act like children in the schoolyard.
Can't politicians ever grow up and fix problems instead of calling eachother names? :(

They passed over him because he's a liberal with a past. An orange past.
And Canadians know the only thing scarier then communist red, is NDP orange.
Mrmoody 3 years ago
So instead they'll APPOINT a guy who referred to himself as an American many times, supported the invasion of Iraq and supports the Bush doctrine.
UnionStayshyn 3 years ago
Wow, someone who stands up for the working man. That's really going to be dangerous to the country.
