You can see he's got the steering turned right but he locked the brakes and skidded - if he'd taken his foot off the brake he'd have got steering back and made the turn!

90% of people will not get off the brakes to regain steering control, they instinctively belive it would be counter intuitive.

That's true, but kind of unusual, most cars now are designed with the windshield adding structural rigidity. As in a rollover the roof is much less likely to crush in with the windshield intact.
