  • this didn't help at all.....

  • AwF sayz it cant erase ROM than it stops

  • Hey I got a Sapphire 4850 with framerate stutter, has this worked for you so far im trying to apply it myself.

  • This does indeed help! I also had to disable Hyperthread and Speedstepping in BIOS. All my games are so smooth. Could not play Battlefield 3 before this. Game was a giant mess of judder, stuttering and rubberbanding.

  • will this work on ati 5670?

  • Haha what the hell, it can't find my graphic card with Winflash & BSE and i have a HD4870..

  • When I've had a game stuttering, it's always been the application that is at fault not the card or the drivers.

Basically, you're talking about powerplay. I used to have a 4870 and that would clock the GPU core down when it wasn't being used. The reason it would clock itself up and down for no reason was that windows xp doesn't have vsync on the desktop, so the GPU is trying to render as many fps as it can, even when you move the mouse cursor.

  • LOL "..I'v ebeen doing this stuff for a long time and I know what exactly I'm talking about... " LOL By bye GPU

  • @MrUsedTampon well lets see, by adjusting the clocks to the factory maxiumum permanently it wont kill the card because it was built for those frequencies duh! example if the frequency while gaming is 850mhz then the card will run fine at 850mhz constantly unless there is poor ventilation which is the builders fault amd would never use frequencies that harm the card as i said I KNOW WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT YOU IDIOT

  • @MrUsedTampon People have tried this everyone i know is happy with this fix im still using the same card today that i first did this fix for, no problems at all

  • @ausgrey Plz mate im on an ati radeon mobility HD 4300,and the game ''battlefield 2 :bad company'' stutters for me,will this fix my problem ?

  • I discovered the other week that this had nothing to do with the clocks. (At least for me) It was the Nasty bandage's on the voltage control chips. Witch caused it to get to overheat. {Also Some times, Games Dont use triple Buffering or because vsync cant be forced. d3doverrider Fixes Those problems.

  • Why can't my RBE find the video card...? Ridiculous, I just want this issue fixed for me here.

  • ehh?? so ur forcing the card to idle at load speeds and voltages, i wouldnt be surprise if ur card died a month later.

  • God bless you! Your are a legend!!

  • I must note to everyone with an ATI card. They STUTTER. Why? I don't know. Some games it's a VSync issue. You turn it off in Modern Warfare 1 and 2 and no stutter. Happens in Fallout 3.

The trick is, if you get more than 60fps all the time, limit your max FPS to 58. If you get less than 60 limit them to 30. Fixes Far Cry 2, Fallout 3, Mw 1 and 2, GTA IV and possibly many other games. I hope ATI fixes this problem in the future.

  • sorry that was wrong user! but i hope it helps you

  • This tutorial is very great(Y) I dit it with my Ati 5850 and it stills stutters in games:/ Can you say what may be wrong?

  • it could be something running in the background which is stealing cpu cycles also i will need to know all your specs of your system

  • @ausgrey

    Amd phenom x4 3,4ghz black edition, kingston hyperX 2gb ddr3 running@ 1600mhz, sapphire ati hd 5850, MSI 785G-E53 motherboard, silver power 600W, windows 7 32 bit.

  • @Penisheart On my mobile 5870 I get bad stutter in GTA IV and Far Cry 2, everything else I've played is great. Try frame capping your games, it fixed all my issues with Far Cry 2. GTA IV has been more difficult, I still don't know what the issue is, it only really stutters during the day time, frame capping it helps too.

  • i want to try this with my card i get stutters but im so scared incase i brick it :(

  • Great tutorial. This used "week old" 4870 I picked up today is quite a bit smoother now, although not nearly as good as my lower spec 8800 GTS, which runs games far better than this card and smooth like butter. This one, although much improved, still isn't close to the flawless 8800 GTS.

However, I have used your settings of 750mhz across the board. It runs at just over 60C in game thanks to the excellent cooler used, so I think I'll go for 800 and maybe 850 throughout and see what happens.

  • Update 4870: 1. Save bios (your video card BIOS) 2. Upload new stok bios (techpowerup) 3. Flash new stok bios 4. test new stok bios 5. Mr ausgrey fix (optional) Update 4870x2: Same as above, note you have 2 bios on this card, one master and one slave, flash master then restart, flash slave and restar again. Note that ausgrey fix involves increasing the minimum fan speed! Note that you will se a power warning in REB (ignore it, faulty warning) Thats all folks
  • Hi all, many thanks to Mr ausgrey :)

    My specs:

    PowerColor HD 4870X2 2GB GDDR5

It's the same story with the x2 card, you have to remember that there are to bios for this card, one master and one slave.

    Do not mix them up..

I also edit the auto fan speed...

    min 40% at 50C, target 70C, max 95 100%

  • very nice guide man. Excellent !! I noticed before that the core clock wasn't stable , even in 0 load. That fixes it. Thanks!!! I have an hd4870

  • I have the HD 4850, 512 MB (Asus) and it worked great! I used the overclock settings that I have RivaTuner set to anyway (standard settings, I still had stuttering). 683 Mhz core, 1069 Mhz memory and 1.084v.

  • I get small stutter with the HD4870 X2,not much but it is there and annoying the heck out of me.Take Vsync off it goes away.Think your great info would fix me up with this.I have Windows 7 64bit.

  • you could try it but im unsure of what difference the x2 model has so this fix might need to be modified for the x2. I cant try it out because i dont have an x2 to do it with

  • Cool, thanks for the info ,i will give it go,well at least take a look at both GPU with RT .Glad to see some out there able and willing to share their PC knowledge.

    Thank you.

  • I did it yesterday and fixed the stuttering ...now i'm afraid this could do something to the card ....it's idle temp is 59 and about 70 while playing..will it decrease the VGA lifetime or something ?

  • It shouldnt because i ran 2 of them with the fix and have never had any problems with them. also radeons do get quite hot under load and should be able to withstand over 90 even but if you have any concerns you can always manually adjust the fan speed in the catalyst panel

  • does this work for the 4890?

  • I havent had a 4890 to test it on but if you try the the tutorial with the card you are doing it at your own risk

  • i got an problem when i click on search for the 4870 bios i get an error '' cannot find discrete AVI Vido Card '' any solutions?

  • im not sure what to make of that as ive never come across it

  • Did you try that fix on Vista 64bit?

It seems RBE and atiwinflash are not working with my OS.

    thank you.

  • I have not tried this fix on 64bit os, howerever it should not matter what os you are using because my tutorial shows you how to keep the clock speeds from fluctating

  • This is very helpful for people who has this problem, im sure it's appreciated.

    5 stars!

  • I sold my 4870 and got a GTX 280 because of the stuttering. Why couldn't you havhe made this guide earlier! I was planning on crossfiring them as well.

  • it took me a long time to figure out the major flaw in these ati cards
