I wish to thank you as this review as I've become a big fan of this version- I own the soundtrack. While I have seen the show on youtube I do wish there was some offical release
You may remember trying to send me the video of this Phantom video in January. I realized I couldn’t receive it because you have to be friends with another YouTube user to send videos. I’ve tried looking for a video of this play every place I could think of. I’ve contacted Theater Under the Stars in Texas where the original production took place, and I contacted Glory Crampton who played Christine.
They responded but said they did not have copies for distribution. I even tried emailing Arthur Kopit but never heard back. So, could you please tell me where I could find this extremely rare play strictly for my own viewing, or could you please try sending it again? If you don’t mind accepting my invite, then perhaps you could kindly send the video to me. Thank you so much; I can’t tell you how much I want this play and how frustrating it has been not to find it!
Oh, could you please PM me the link to the bootleg. I don't approve of them, but I'm doubtful that this Phantom will ever come around here, and it's my favorite! I would appreciate it very much~ :)
I'm so glad that you did a Gaston/Erik montage! I remember when I first made that connection a few years ago, and I was rather stunned and pretty much those exact thoughts went through my mind.
Thank you sooooo much! I was looking all over picking out scenes I could find from this original play... of course I just stopped by ones with different actors and such -- *sigh. And then I came across this. Where can I find the rest of the play please? I really need to see the whole thing! Also, is this still playing anywhere or have they stopped showing it? Thanks again =)
I love your reviews! Keep up the good work, Phantom Reviewer : D Would you mind telling me where you got the bootleg for this show from? I'd love to see it.
I remember first getting the soundtrack when I was in 7th grade, and even though some of the songs are so-so and some of the lines are a little cheesy, this version has a really special place in my heart. True, the ALW version is REALLY well done, and the music is spectacular. But, at the same time, it lacks some depth in the characters. In this version, you really get a lot of personal moments with the characters, especially Erik. I also love Richard's performance and the unmasking scene. :)
I loved your review, but please, don't be so cruel reviewer, I really love the Takarazuka version D: The 2004 one is so good! I think it sounds better than the american, please, give it a try. It's got nothing to do with lesbians! OK, they're all actresses, but that's why it sounds so good! Please, be a little more tolerant.
(BTW that walking iTunes preview was so funny, I couldn't stop laughing :D)
Great review. You know, there are hilarious sketches from collegehumor about some kind of phantom of the opera parody. Check it out if you want to, specially the one called "Phantom of The Catacomb". Though it's too silly to make a review out of it haha.
I still say "You are Music" is the loveliest song in any Phantom musical, even if the musical had its weak points (and as TPR points out, the main theme rips off Sweeney Todd)
This version totally gets less credit than it deserves, I think. While I adore ALW's musical, in the phantom fandom, it sort of runs out waving its arms in front of all the other things made going "LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME!" and it can get a bit annoying. Even if the music isn't as catchy in Phantom, you've inspired me to at least check out the soundtrack! Thank you for the great review.
The ending 2 this is way more sadder than Webber's. Atleast he lived 2 make a sequal in that 1! I like this Phantom a lot more than Dance. He has a fab phantomy speaking voice, he has that edge - loved his 'I'm nt used 2 killing people' bit and he FRIED Carlotta. That has got 2 b the best thing I have ever seen, except 4 mayb Raoul dying in the Englund version. Getting fried beats a bag of rats anyday. If any1 died it should hv been Raoul as punishment 4 using words i cnt even spell
Not to nit-pick, but it's a bit unfair to charge Yeston&Kopit with aping other artists when the artists you mention have done the same thing. Are you sure that Kopit didn't take his Phantom theme directly from Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique's 5th Movement as Sondheim did? And maybe ALW fell asleep while listening to Puccini's Girl of the Golden West, but 'Music of the Night' didn't come out of his own head w/o help. Otherwise, it's a great and entertaining review.
I'm glad to hear you found this musical decent as well. I remember seeing it in high school, before I was able to see the ALW musical. I still listen to the soundtrack now and again. I love how in goes more in depth with the characters, and Christine finally has some sort of personality.
I still remember the first time I saw a production of "Phantom" thinking it was ALW's. I was rather confused once the show started :P Anyway, excellent review! Can't wait for more :D
I totally loved this! I honestly love the music of this musical, and unfortunately have no way of seeing this musical, like most people. So I'm going to have to agree with DarthxErik and ask for the link because I would SOOO like to see it!!!
