I envy her for being in a sorority because I want to be in one so badly, but need to work on my grades right now. I like how she talked about the certain projects she was involved in and her experiences in Whitewater, it's so easy to relate to!
Teamwork, creativity, and initiative—all great qualities I hope to fully develop by the time I graduate. It’s great to hear her talk about all the projects she’s worked on. Great advice on networking effectively (face to face/in-person) and following up.
I liked that she talked about being in a sorority. I'm in a sorority and I'd like to think that it is going to help me in my professional life. First because of the social aspect, and also because of constantly working with other people and really working in a team. Also I think that it will help with my networking and hopefully getting my name out there and really getting to know the people in my career field.
Its funny to me how she can have accomplished so much in her career and along somes social media and thers something new she has to learn about in order to compete in her field. PR is forever changing.
Ms. Oxley's advice about teamwork is key. She's on point when referencing that you have to get along with people to be successful. I also like that she spent her time away from Wisconsin for some time. It's reassuring to know that moving away can be a great experience for networking and understanding how others work in your field. It's so interesting to see where your career can take you. I like that she was able to work with NASA!
Ms. Oxley's advice about meeting people within the business community and local community to serve as mentors is really intriguing to me. I never thought that everyday people, regardless of proffession could be a useful networking tool. By meeting people from all around you can tap into their network of people which is very important in moving towards your desired career.
I love that UWW has always had a positive influence on its students throughout the year. Ms. Oxley is very informative and really knows what she talking about. She has some very great experiences with her past careers and is still continuing to prosper. It really shows you where you go professionally with your UWW degrees.
Learning how things have changed is interesting. Hands on experiences are very important in school because it forces students to think outside the box. Its important to get out and meet new people particularly older people. They can give you advice on things they've experienced that you can't read in books. Meeting with people that have done it before will give you a leg up on the other potential employees. DM
Teamwork is huge to PR, and the rest of your life. I think that it's really interesting that she mentions them. It's nice to see her different jobs and how the experience helped her. She is very active and I hope to be involved with my job/s as much as she is. It's nice to see all the jobs she's had experience with and I think she is very successful as a PR practitioner.
I admire the fact that Merri has taken every bit of information and experience in her professional life that she obtained throughout her work career and time at UWW and transformed it into her ability to own her own company. She is definitively somebody to look up to in the PR profession.
It's great to see that what you learn now can really be applied in your future. It's clear that her career is not even close to being over. I like thinking that when I'm older I'll still be very active in my career.
To hear about all her experiences, it seems like she used all of them to further her success by creating a company and other organizations. She has accomplished a lot, but is still learning things like social media.
Merri has plenty of experience that has definitely helped her reach where she has reached in her PR career. She has been involved in a lot of activities and her diverse work experience would have definitely made her a competitive person.
Hands on experiences are definitely those which we can appreciate the most. A lot of what we were required to do for this class I was completely lost on, but I eventually figured it out. I really enjoyed the words of advice she had to offer and the need for students to take advantage of different social media outlets. She's a busy lady, which is great. It seems as if she experiences something new everyday! Mentoring and good adivice is something every college student needs.

It was different to hear from an older alumni member from UW-W. She enjoyed footballs, interaction and classes. We sound very familiar even with age difference. She mentioned that team work was the biggest skills she received from college, which I would agree with. Stephanie B
I thought her advice on networking was great. She made a good point that not everything can be done on the computer. Face to face time does play an important role. Also, I agree that time management is important in every area of your life, but especially in your career. Sarah W
Her words of wisdom is what stood out to me the most because she stated that in college you shouldnt spend money that you dont have and that some assignments your professor gives you make you think creative which prepares you in the future. Her day is pretty busy, but she shows a strong desire to help out and network with people she doesnt know each day.
It's interesting to have an older UWW alumni person because even though the wars were different many other things were exactly the same tons of years later.. Being able to work for applied logistics for one of her first jobs in her professional career has got to be AWESOME!
I like how she emphasized the importance of team work. Especially being in a sorority of many girls. Her work history is impressive too. Not only has she worked in Wisconsin , but also in Washington. I really liked how she started her own business.
I love how Merri Oxley's interview is very diverse because she talks about how teamwork is very important in the workplace and how hands-on experiences are great. Starting her own company called The Communication Team is an awesome idea and the Space Day project is very creative!
I likes how Merri stressed how important learning how to get along with others and teamwork is. After all this is what public relations is all about. She also mentioned having initiative in public relations is crucial because no day is the same so one has to be ready to take on anything.
Merri Oxley is very inspiring and had a great time going to school during the Vietnam War. It is very important how she included the hands on skills she learned as well as team building with her sorority sisters and living on campus in general.
I like how she brought up that team work is something that you learn all throughout college and how you need to use those skills in the real world. She seems very accomplished in her field and has done great work
I like that she really brought things to the average college kids life as far as building team work by staying in the dorms and also by her being in a sorority because a lot of people are interested in greek life. I also thought it was cool that she worked with scientist from all over the world. That's a good opportunity and that's also good networking.
I like that Merri spoke about really taking that initiative and jumping at the chance to help out your professor and taking those opportunities. I also like that she is using social media, like LinkedIn, it is just another reminder how important making those connections really are.
I have to agree. College forces us to learn how to get along with many different people. I think it's pretty cool that she had an opportunity to work with so many different people in D.C. It sounds like it was very rewarding for her. It's also pretty cool that she owns her own company.
I would have to agree with Merri when she said that she learned team work and money managment while she was at college. This is so true because learning how to make it on your own and get along with many different types of people is key to success in the business world.
Hearing words of wisdom from someone in a totally different generation is great. She started with a totally different set of tools but has done an amazing job of changing with the times and is still very successful. She is an accomplished woman and as much as I hate it, she makes a great point that team work is a must in being successful.
I thought it was interesting she worked with scientists all over the United States
Time management is important and team work is also huge! A lot of things have remained the same and it was nice to hear all of her work experience and advice from someone that is from another generation.
Teamwork is huge, not only in your profession but in everyday life. I agree that taking initiative is very important in you achieving your goals. Her experience with Space Day seemed like a lot of work, but very interesting. It's nice hearing from someone who graduated from UW-Whitewater many years back.
I like how the generations show the differences from when they went to school and what we are doing now, like how she talked about the Vietnam war in this video. Also I liked how she talked about team work and that you gain experiences even in the dorms that you carry with you for the rest of your life.
I liked this video because it shows the difference in generations since she was in college. It is also interesting to know that a lot of things have remained the same. It’s true that a lot of things are challenging but your professors won’t give you work that you’re not able to work through.
I really enjoyed hearing from someone who comes from a completely different generation that I do. She is very successful and inspirational in all the things she has accomplished. I also particularly enjoyed listening to her since she lived out in the Washington DC area and that is where I will be interning this summer.

It's nice to hear from an older generation of UW-Whitewater Alumni and how things are still generally the same for the most part. Ms. Oxley is very accomplished and has built more than one company. I like that she's moved to different places and worked for different companies to find her place in the PR world.
I liked that Merri emphasized team work and that she uses social media. I also like that she said that she doesn't have an average day, "every day is different and that's what makes it fun." Something else that Merri said that was very important was getting out into the community and going to business events in order to start networking, Face to face communication is important. And having a great mentor can be very beneficial.
Many of the experiences Merri gained while at UW-Whitewater, such as learning how to work together with others as a team, are still a part of what students take away from the public relations program today. Merri has had a lot of interesting jobs since graduating but being able to work with clients from her own business seems very rewarding. - Jaime S.
I thought it was interesting to hear advice from someone who graduated from UWW so long ago because she has so much under her belt that she has a lot of advice to offer out. Even though she is not a recent graduate, I like that she still utilizes LinkedIn and Facebook. She has had a lot of interesting jobs and was able to start her own company which makes me hope that I will be just as successful.
I love the fact that she didnt just recently graduate and still had great advice on how to establish yourself later on in life. I also agree with her that face to face communication is very important.
She is a great example of a person who has been in the PR field for a long time. she also stresses the importance of getting out in the community and making connections with them because you can learn from them and use them to make your life a little easier. It was great to see that although she graduated years ago she still is so current in the public relations world today. Although the years has passed whitewater still holds true to the Greek system being strong and how it can be similar to working in a work environment. Team work is key in all business adventures. I loved her advice on meeting people in our community and to get a mentor to help them further there career.

It was fun to see that Merri was a Greek while she was in Whitewater. She appeared to specialize in branding and re-branding organizations which is a huge part of the PR field.

Its great to hear that not everything is being done on computers. Some things need to be done face to face. I like how everything is really laid back with the music and setting. It's nice to hear how things have changed over the years and all of her experiences.
The music was very relaxing and soothing and made it seem real. She was apart of the greek community here as am I . She has done a lot in her life and made many accomplishments.
I loved the relaxed setting in this video, it made it seem so much more natural giving her experiences. I also loved the casual speech and setting because it felt like she was actually talking to me and not a camera. I am also very proud to say that she is an Alpha Sig alum! I am proud to say that Merri Oxley is an Alpha Sigma Alum as well as an UWW Alum. I think she makes a great point when she says that face to face communication is important, especially with the different generations.
Merri talks about the importance of being involved. Not only was she involved in meeting people and networking but she was also involved in orgs on campus and living in dorms. I think this is key to learn early. The more you experience yourself to group activities the easier it is to get used to a career in the PR field.
She advices that being able to reach out to people and meeting others is important when you are in college and in a field such as PR. Networking is key. It will give you more opportunities for experiences in the field as well. - SH
I really liked her advice to be able to work as a team and to take initiative in college. I also liked her stories about all of the different kinds of work she's done. She seems like she's had a really well rounded career with lots of exciting tasks. I also liked that she gave us advice to go out and meet new people and new businesses, and then to follow up with those people.
I agree with Merri on being socialable. Social media alone will not get the career you want, putting your face out there as well as networking and showing firms what you're capable of is a very important part of getting your name out there.I do that by going to job fairs or campus events and find that it definitely helps.
I like the fact that Marri said that us students should learn to communicate not only on the computer but to communicate face to face. I also liked the fact that she gave us the advice to go to business events. I think that is a great idea to get connected with companies who you could work with sometime in the future.
Her advice on meeting people in person than following up stood out as good advice I know I will be using in the future.
