All those sus chords, sounds so modern even 30+ years later. What a brilliant talent. I saw Pat at Byrdland in NYC a couple of years ago. He can play those 16th note lines effortlessly and forever. He just keeps going and going... never breathes, just amazing. He's like a marathon runner. Ever tried to do that on guitar? It's impossible!! LOL BTW George Benson was in the audience that night getting inspired no doubt.
@intune1234 You're right about this tune ahead of it's time.I played this tune for some one and asked him to guess when it was recorded.he guessed "Oh....about 2006?"
@Summalogicae The album and the title of this piece i "Joyous Lake"The tracks as listed are:1 Line Games.2 Song Bird.3 Mardi Gras.4M'Wandishi.5 Pyramidal Vision.6 Joyous Lake.
Up to this day i've never heard a guitarist who encapsulates "Freedom of expression" in quite the same way as Pat Martino. John Abercrombie comes close.
Do you have his incredible tune off this same record, Line Games? There is no song like Line Games like there is no other album in Jazz, rock, contemporary, or anything else like this. Seriously, please post Line Games.
Pat is my favorite Jazz guitarist--I'm old enough to have this "LP" yes record not CD. Never could get into this--the jazz of the late 70's and 80's to my ears was just synth madness with flashes of brilliance human warmth-- this solo being one of those moments.
I saw this group perform live at a club in Evanston, Illinois called Amazingrace back in '76. I was already diggin' Martino's Consciousness record, then this fusion thing came out,...WOW!
Martino´s best "latin Jazz/Rock" album I think. He refreshed this tune 22 years later on his `stone blue` album. The band called `Joyous lake" then, like the title. I have the (now scratchy ) LP. Can anybody tel me, wether the album is available on CD ? Listen to the groove from 3.47 onwards. Joyous!
I've got it on a 2003 CD by Savoy Jazz called "First Light". It's both "Joyous Lake" and the earlier "Starbright" albums that Pat did for Warner Brothers before the worsening health problems leading to his brain surgery sidelined him.
Hmmm, this is first piece I've heard from the 'old' Pat, and please don't jump on me, but his current playing is much more sophisticated. Which you would expect, but I got the impression that he re-learned from his records, but I wouldn't recognize his soloing here.
This was 30 years ago, don't you think most musicians would gain some more sophistication in that amount of time? This was cutting edge playing at the time.
check out "sunny" from his live cd that came out in 72. it should be on the related videos. Personally, i feel that pat was 1000000000000 better before but hes still a god now!
Yes, I agree with all ya comments here.. He belongs to my few Jazz guitar heros since the mid-70s. Is this album available on re-issue CD meanwhile? If that should not be the case it would show again, who ignorant the music-industry still is...All musicians playin´soooo wonderful on that tune (imagine how young they were back in 1976 !)
I saw him do this at Amazing Grace in evanston ill in 76 right after this came out I talked to him about it at yoshis in oakland in 05 he did`nt remember because of his brain injury he is One Cool Dude
I saw Pat perform this live in Edwardsville on 4/3/1977, my birthday. It was a good birthday present! That was shortly before he stopped performing in public because of the health problems that ultimately led to his brain surgery.
