The counter point to “free” is that when you can’t recover your business critical data set after human error, natural disaster or equipment failure, no one from the “free” company will hire you after you since you are now unemployable. At 20:1 or more dedupe, I would find other ways to cut expenditures from my budget before I’d risk my career to save a relatively small percentage of my IT budget.
I did the numbers comparing a StoreOnce Backup System (dedup enabled!) to a cheap raid system running a free, dedup-enabled OS or dedup-programm and I got this result: Store Once is up to 500 times a expensive as a cheap fix that'll do the job. That's value?
