  • who in the hell won ?

  • Rod Roddy would've been great in this

  • 1 person is stuck in the past. You're among friends.

  • The first three song played in this groovy showcase (best based to me on my oldies station WCBS-FM 101.1 in New York and its famous DJs, notably "Cousin Brucie" Morrow) were:

    Paul Simon - Kodachrome (1973)

Judy Collins - Both Sides Now (1969)

    and

The Bee Gees - Nights on Broadway (1975)

  • This might've been from either the 1977-78 or 1978-79 seasons.

  • Cool showcase. :3

Showcases are never this long anymore, at most they're only about 45 seconds to one minute and never have any sort of sketch to go with them =/

  • lol @ 4:12 "Oh... I WISH they HADN'T sang THAT again..."

  • @fanofangela89returns 0:57 Spongebob: Cheer up. Here's that Nycon Camera you asked for.

Johnny: 1:01 Did you hear that? Yeah Paul Simon was indeed talking and singing about A GENUINE NYCON CAMERA.

  • Great clip! I wanna know who won the showcase.

  • Just watched this again, and Johnny's awesome in a Showcase that screams "Wolpert".

This seems to be the Studio Master (the quality is very fluid). Considering this, and the fact that this upload appears to coincide with the release of "Johnny Olson: A Voice In Time"...

The donator of this clip is, possibly, one Randy West. That's just a theory, but regardless of whether I'm right I don't suggest sending him a bunch of pointless emails.

Besides, his announcing is very good and Olson-esque.

  • It's not Randy, either. (Although you were correct in guessing why I chose to upload it when I did; I figured any game show geek who bought the book would want to look for Johnny on YouTube.)

  • Wow! That was amazing!!! I would love to see this sort of thing again!! It's great!!

One other note-The minute hands on the clocks are not in sync with each other!

Other than that one little "issue", this was still a GREAT video!!! Thanks for sharing!!

  • I wish they could bring this showcase theme back (with a few changes to modernize it due to technology). I could definitely see Rich having fun doing this!

  • And also, because the showcase featured a Cadillac and two trips as well as no commercial break between the bids and reveal, this is from the syndicated nighttime version which was still around but now hosted by Barker.

  • Not necessarily - there were a few years in the late '70s daytime show where there was no break between bids and reveals... and a showcase pushing $20K is not unprecedented either.

There was one to do with "competing with your neighbors" (late 70s) that was an 8-prize showcase with 2 cars - a Chevette and a Cadillac. Just over $19K.

  • Besides, if this was a Nighttime Price is Right, the first bid would have been a lot higher!

  • johnny olson 0:18 0:23 0:28 0:37 0:50?

  • Also.. 0:23 through 0:26 of this vid was featured in an Olson clip montage on TPIR's 25th anniversary special.

  • Johnny Olson looked like he was REALLY enjoying himself here!

  • He always did. These were the best showcases they did. I loved the skits. This clip looks like it was shot yesterday it is so clear and crisp. It must be from the dvd set but I can not say for sure as I do not own it.

  • Not from the DVD set.

  • That's a hot-looking Cadillac!

  • I remember seeing a picture on Tony Harrison's hopelessly-outdated website that had "DJ Johnny" in front of a weird background (Tony Harrison donated this clip?). Thanks for satisfying my curiosity as to this.

And yeah, I can see why this wasn't done too often. Do you know if the donor has an airdate, tapedate, or show number?

(Considering that Holly is present, the Turntable has its solid red-orange side showing, and there's no commercial break...no earlier than about mid-1977.)

  • Wasn't Tony.

  • Ah. Sorry about that. ^_^;

  • I think the anonymous donor's name rhymes with dodger. But I'm probably wrong.

  • Actually, yes, you are wrong. :-) Anonymous donor in this case doesn't mean "somebody we all know," it simply means somebody who doesn't want to deal with a bunch of e-mails from TPIR fans wanting stuff.

  • You're killing me! Who won? What was the ARP of that '78 Caddy showcase?

  • The answer to the first question is, "I don't know." The answer to the second question is, "I don't know."

  • That Fleetwood Broughham started at $17K (FOB Detroit) The whole showcase was probably at $20K for 1977-78

  • Right, because the winnings limit for CBS game shows at the time was $25,000 (later $50,000 in the '80s before they abolished it).

  • Awesome! I love this one! Thanks for posting.

Here are the titles of the songs:

    1. "Kodachrome" (Paul Simon)

    2. "Both Sides Now" (Joni Mitchell)

    3. "Nights on Broadway" (The Bee Gees)

    4. "Beep, Beep" (The Playmates)

  • Actually, it was Judy Collins who sang "Both Sides Now".

  • Ah yes, you are right. I remember Joni Mitchell wrote the song, but it was indeed Judy Collins who sang it.

  • Ooh! 0:39 - 1:30 Kodachrome by Paul Simon! I love that song! I hear it sometimes on 105.7 WROR

  • this is really great do you think you could get more cilps?

  • Which year was this?

  • 1977
