  • great review my friend

  • BTW, thanks for ur vids. Before I got mine, I seriously lusted over the e39 m5. I've watched every single owner video on YouTube, and i watched yours over and over to dream about what it would be like to own one. I freakin love the car.....all the hype is justified, its insane.....apart from my stupid dsc. I don't know, ill ask around to see if anybody could tune it down....maybe Evolve.

  • @spacedreamer12 Thanks so much for watching! Have you found my channel dedicated to this car? @E39Source

  • Yeah, I just found out through m5board that the secret dsc mode is a myth. I don't mind it most of the time. But just yesterday, the dsc kicked in when I downshifted from 6th to 3rd at around 4500 rpm. The roads were dry, maybe I just have a faulty system.

  • I just got an m5 myself. Dont you think the dsc system is way too intrusive though? Even a moderate highway acceleration can trigger the system and make my car feel as if I had just stomped the brakes. I need some way to dial it down without actually turning it off. I'm not a good enough driver ti trust driving an m5 without traction control.......but it sucks....

  • @spacedreamer12 I've only had the DSC come on on the highway when the roads are super slick with snow/ice. ...Or maybe if you're in 3rd gear at 75MPH. There is, supposedly, another mode for the DSC button though. One that only comes on if you start to slide, not spin tires in a straight line. I think you press and hold the button for ten seconds... maybe Google around for that information?

Otherwise, I think the system is very powerful, and generally doesn't stand in the way.

  • Ryan, do u drive with the dsc on or off mist of the time?

  • @spacedreamer12 On 99% of the time.

  • @RyanKnowsTech hey Ryan I'm looking to buy a 2002 M5 which has been used only 60000 km. i really want to buy it but to be honest im really scared that its gonna cause problems. Ive loved this car since i was 10. its a beautiful beast and id kill to have one but im just afraid that it might have a lot of problems and maintenance that will kill me. can you give me some advice and tips please. really appreciated

  • @12absinthe12 You might enjoy the channel I started all about my car. @E39Source. I have tons of information about it on there. With only 60000km, you should be good for a long wile. Maintenance is expensive, but you're buying a premium car. If it's been taken care of, and you continue to take care of it, I'd say that's a good buy.

  • why would you use a Honda key holder for the bmw´s key? :s

  • @chrstnd Where do I have a Honda key holder??

  • I've currently got a 1995 Bmw 540i M sport 6 speed and a 2001 Bmw 740i sport, I'm looking at trading the 740i in for an M5. Whats the maintenance like(I'm not new to bmw's by any means) but I'm am curious as to what I'd be getting into. Thanks and beautiful car!

  • @m19921992 Hey- great car! Please check out my channel about these cars @E39Source. I have many videos about my M5 on there. I have a maintenance video, but that needs and update badly, which is coming in a few days. Maintenance on an ///M car is more than anything else, all the components are ever so slightly different. Getting one with no Service Engine Soon light on is the key!!

  • @RyanKnowsTech can i have your car :]

  • awesome car man, take good care of it! i,m thinking of buying 1

  • @MrShuturmouth94 Oh man, I've put 15k in this car since this video. Check out my channel @E39Source where I have, and am still, making videos about this car!

  • @RyanKnowsTech ok man ;)

  • bmw never fwd

  • @dvaifilmsdotcom Some will be in the future!

  • @RyanKnowsTech possibly but highly doubt it, they never had a front wheel drive and i dont think they would invest to develope a fwd system. i can bet money they will only have Xdrive and Sdrive .....

anyway nice car pal, i have the e39 540 i love it, been a bimmer enthusiest since 2000

  • @dvaifilmsdotcom No I've heard that they are, but I hope they don't. Great car, there are a few 540is around here, but mostly 528is.

  • @RyanKnowsTech i take pride in my 540 i dreamed about it since 98 (around when they came out with e39) i never dreamed of the M5 because i figured i couldnt afford to get one, the 540 was do-able for me and 6 months ago i bought one, happy.

in which cars did you hear they will make fwd? must be the 320's or 125's

as for a 5 series or 7 cant be, no way, even if you told me you read it in a magazine i wouldnt believe anyone until i saw for myself hah

  • @dvaifilmsdotcom I've heard that the new 1 series will be fwd, but I hope that it's not. That wouldn't be the BMW way.

  • Thanks God its not automatic gear shift!...looks like there is normal americans xD and the car is perfection...

  • @BoySrbinCCCC I HATE automatica transmissions! It's so hard to get manuals over here in the States anymore.

  • @RyanKnowsTech Well i hate them too, specialy if you have a car like BMW and it have 400hp! than u must have manual gearbox, u must feel that power while u shift the gears...

  • @RyanKnowsTech And one more thing...do u have any driving vid of this car maybe?

  • @BoySrbinCCCC On the channel about this car, yes. @E39Source. I drove it a bit in the manual transmission video.

  • @BoySrbinCCCC no e39 m5 auto

  • That thing is a gas guzzler, but other than that, it's a nice car.

  • @Uxhenik I get a solid 20 city, 30 highway. Definitely not a gas guzzler.

  • @RyanKnowsTech You sure? Because before commenting, I checked the statistics, and it said it got about 12 city, 19 highway. This was from an official government site, by the way. Maybe your car is just lucky.

  • @Uxhenik My window sticker says 13 city 21 highway, but you'd have to constantly drive it pretty hard to get that. The computer calculates 20 city and 30 highway, and my calculations at the pump on my car match that.

  • @RyanKnowsTech wow . u really mean it? wtf thats as good as my 1.6 european 100 horse power ford focus :) from 2007

  • @Lostspirit221 Yeah, if driven normally (not as fast as possible everywhere you go, but you can enjoy the car's power and still get good mileage)

  • How much did u pay for it?

  • @flyguyviky $12,900. Put $18,000 in it since!

  • @RyanKnowsTech Thats cheap, Here in canada u need to pay over 18 to 20 000$

  • Beautiful ride inside and out. Any major problems since you've owned it?

  • @SkylinesTheLimit Thanks! I have not really had any big problems, check out my dedicated channel to this car. I made a video about it's reliability and maintenance info. Please subscribe if it interests you! @E39Source

  • my practical dream car

  • why cant people just watch the video for what it is and stop picking faults with the guy...wankers.

  • ... "we're not going out for a drive today because it's not the best wheather and I'm still feeling out the stick shift" ... and you're an American PUSSY who must first learn to drive and then buy a 400 hp M5. Here in Europe we don't wait for the weather to be great and we're not afraid from that technological marvel you americans call stick shift. If you can not drive a car with manual gearbox just don't bother to ruin a beautiful car like the E39 M5

  • @borkata92 I am blessed enough to have this as a first car. I have learned a lot with this, and how to drive stick. Please excuse me for being the only person I know to actually love a manual transmission, and only drive them. Understand that everybody has to start and learn somewhere, I'm luck enough to start out with this. I'll drive it in any weather now without any trouble, this was over a year ago.

  • @borkata92 you mad bro? i would be too if i lived in Europe LOL

  • My favorite M5 then, and STILL is! Absolutely beautiful drivers car.

  • Going to look at at 2000 M5 tomorrow morning. I'll interpret hearing Steel Pulse when you turned on the stereo as a sign that I need to buy the car.

  • @Fender1018 BUY THE CAR! You'll LOVE it.

  • that's not a diffusor on the trunk, it's a spoiler. E39 M5 doesn't really have a diffusor

  • @animeonperseest I noted that in the annotations, but thanks for the clarification.

  • 30 miles per gallon thats hard to believe to offense

  • @MegaZombieland1234 I know it is, but it's real.

  • I think all bmw's are rear wheel drive??? really dude

  • @Gaud14 Some new models will be fwd, and more and more are awd now.

  • @RyanKnowsTech what are you talking about, BMW will never be FWD, all their M cars are RWD, Other BMWS are RWD unless its a xi version where its AWD. X3, x5, x6 are all AWD

  • @BMWF33N Sure they will, in some cases. I think it's the 1 series in Europe that is only FWD... I think the M cars will always be RWD though. The X1 is AWD too.

  • the Best M5 ever built period ! M5 E39 represent the M5's in perfection ! btw whats the name of that track reaggea I think nice of u I would really like to have it in my M5 :D

  • @Plisii I agree, but the F10 is a lot of car to beat, and I don't think the E39 has what it takes. The luxury and technology is just better, as well as styling. I will agree that the E60 is pretty ugly and overly-complicated though.

The reggae song was 'Body Guard' from Steel Pulse.

  • @RyanKnowsTech yes ofc the luxury and technology is better but still not because I own one but if u really look deep in it the M5 E39 is such a perfection I mean u dont have to play with buttons all day long like the E60 M5, sport mode super sport mode and all that kind of stuff I think they will have all these options in F10 to and I cant agree about the styling I dont think it looks that good even though ím a '' BMW enthusiast''. BMW got to go with the future but not to far from it.

  • @RyanKnowsTech sry about my english im not american or from england :P thanks for the track buddy !

  • @RyanKnowsTech BTW u still got the M5 E39 ?

  • @Plisii Yes, 155000 miles to date!

  • they just dont make em like they used to.. these were the real bmws

  • could you switch the tools out for guns, to get a like a supernatural/pulp fiction kinda wibe?

  • btw if you press the lock unlock button on the key it will open/close the windows... has been a bmw thing ever since the early 90s i reckon the same with the e32 as youd turn and hold the key on the door instead since there wasnt any remotes back then.

    cheers

  • @validfor1hour Yeah I found that out a while back, you have to hold it for a few seconds. Mine will only go down though. No matter what I hold they won't go up.

  • @RyanKnowsTech That's because its US spec, only the Euro spec BMW's can go UP. There are a ton of tutorials online, and all you need is a specific cable, and you can actually change the electronics to Euro spec, which will give you Euro blinkers, The ability to put the windows up with the key, and a few other nice things. Its literally just changing a value on the ECU from false to true.

  • @mcperson2k Is it easy to do? How much will it cost me. Thanks for the info. And how are Euro blinkers different? Are they illegal here in the US?

  • @RyanKnowsTech They are legal, and the difference is instead of 1 blink, you will get 2 quick blinks. And its easy to do, all you need is the cable, not sure how much is costs... Or you could probably pay a bmw place to do it for 40 bucks.

  • you are a lucky man, good vid, and love the review and congrats on the M5

  • @validfor1hour Thank you!

  • How's the power on this car? Does high mileage effect it at all? and how long do these cars typically last if well taken care of? Thanks

  • @lawlbiker Hey! I saw your comment on my @E39Source channel, both channels are operated by me. Anyhow, the power's great. It's still a firm blast after 154,950 miles. If well taken care of, you may be able to pull near 300k miles out of one! I've seen them on Ebay with over 200k, and they still look like new. Mileage will always effect power (some compression is lost every time the engine runs) but not very much!

  • Whats the song you play? :) Like it

  • never say who needs cupholders.....

  • @socktan101 I've never used them...

  • @bvca156 I went thru the same dillema a few weeks ago. I test drove both and I will be in the market for an M5. Although on paper the numbers look similar, 0-100, etc, the M5 feels way more powerful especially in higher gears. The M3 is lighter but has less torque, and it's being felt. The 6cyl is a screamer, sounds great, but you need to work it to get to speed.Brakes better for the M5. Both corner better than you'll ever need on a street. Sedan or coupe, gas mileage, SMG, looks, that's up to u

  • Hey there Ryan, how many miles have you put on it so far since you got it? & what kind of problems have you ran into? I'm looking to pick one of these up, never owned a German V8 before lol.

  • @xX1AzNYoungstaXx I got it with 147,000 miles. It now has 154,200 miles. Aside from a lot of upgrading, nothing big has gone wrong with the car. These engines are strong, and go a long time. I have started a channel dedicated to the car, please check it out! @E39Source

  • Hey guys, thanks for watching! I have created a channel dedicated to the E39, @E39Source. Please subscribe if you're interested! I have many videos to come. I hope to make it like a video-based online forum about and for E39 (and similar) BMW models and their service, parts, upgrades, and maintenance. Thanks!

  • the 1998-2003 BMW M5 was assembled in

    Dingolfing, Germany

  • @Annihilator1111 It's final point of assembly was Dingolfing, Germany, yes.

  • @RyanKnowsTech its a very nice car best BMW they made and the 80s to early 00s best era for BMW

  • @Annihilator1111 You really think so? I'm no fan of the E60, but the F10 and F12 (new 5 and 6 series are incredible, I just wish they made more in manuals. Do you like the current models?

BTW, I have started a channel dedicated to this car. It's @E39Source here on YouTube, please subscribe if you're interested!

  • @RyanKnowsTech well im more keen on the old BMW and in England there are loads of manual old BMW model not Automatic which gearbox do you have in the M5

  • @RyanKnowsTech well im more keen on the old BMW but there are quite a lot of Manual gearbox models of the BMWs here then Automatic old ones and which gearbox do you have

  • @RyanKnowsTech well im more keen on the old BMW but there are quite a lot of Manual gearbox models of the BMWs here then Automatic old ones and which gearbox do you have

  • i want an e39 m5 but's too expensive in egypt..............it costs 42000$ here

  • A well spoken articulate BMW enthusiast! This guy is one the few that give Americans a good name.

  • @Shields686 Thank you very much!

  • @Shields686 This guy doesn't know a damn thing... sport button stiffening suspension? excuse me? If you don't understand the insult you shouldn't call the narrator a BMW enthusiast either.

  • @Shields686 oh, shut the fuck up with that already. sick of people CONSTANTLY bashing Americans.

  • omg i love this car

    dream car*

  • black trim ftw!

  • nice cap dude.

  • Great review, thanks

  • black trims are there to get knock why would you want body couler ones

  • Hi, when you say you have an issue with second gear, I get that issue with jerking sometimes too. Just let the clutch out a little slower with a bit more gas and it tends to go away :D the higher the gear, the less jerk too!

  • @richardsimpogames Ahh, yes. I was very new to a stick shift. I've mastered it now. 152,000 miles today!

  • @RyanKnowsTech Ah cool, I'm going to start saving for a BMW, I really want the new style M3 from 2008 onwards, but I think I'll have settle for the Z4. The M3's are very expensive 2nd hand :(

  • Nice video mate

  • I used to have an e46 I am def. getting an e39 in the future.

  • nice car! nice vid! very good quality cam! :) But 2:28 ->its not a diffusor! The diffusor is there between the two exhaust (2x2 exhaust). :) its a spoiler. :) sorry for the teasing!

  • @sftomee Yeah I caught that a while back, sorry! Thanks though. :)

  • very nice! what song is that btw?

  • @ahmadbila06 Steel Pulse- Body Guard.

  • all bmws are rear wheel drive

  • at 3:08 there in the right corner I can see a left side of the quad exhaust of Mercedes maybe? how many cars you have?

    tnx

    great video!

  • @olaguma This was actually filmed at my grandfather's house. That's his 2001 Cadillac Seville. Not my style, but it's a nice car.

  • hey bro how do you set up your cameras in the car?

  • @hallal55 Tripod. Two of the legs in the passenger foot wells and the other one, not fully extended, on the seat.

  • finally someone who knows how to do a proper review... i can barley find reviews for older 5 series and esp 3

  • @hallal55 Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!

  • That is One of the Best Car Review's Ever. Well done...

My Personal Opinion - E39 Is the most successful 5 series BMW ever had. The video is also special, acorrding to the fact that this E39 is an ///M5.

I have no idea why he said '' it's not the best weather '' but anyway.

    Nice color...

  • @SONAR016 Thank you! It was actually misting and it was supposed to storm later that day... so I wanted to get it done before it really rained.

  • Wana buy old stuff, buy American. It's cheap to fix and easy to customize... Stay current with your European models, they are MUCH funner with a warranty!!

  • How much did u pay for the car? are they hard to maintain, because i herd people say it is. But let me know im planning of buying one.

  • @nolo121 $12,900. Maintenance is a bit of pain, just expensive at a BMW Center. Good news is there is TONS of data online about repairs and what to do with some common problems. There are no HUGE problems that I know of. So far, I've little go wrong with mine. The parking brake is weak, and that's a bigger deal than you'd think to have fixed. The rear wheels have to come off, and things need to be adjusted. The cup holder also broke... $68!! I have a squeaky window as well-

  • @nolo121 (cont) BMW has to take the door apart to tighten things up, and it'll be about $110. Other than that, these are good cars. I recommend buying one with less than 125,000 that has been taken care, you'll be okay, and you will LOVE this car!

  • thats nice now push the m button and give it some !!!

  • Beautiful car Ryan, looks absolutely immaculate!

My own E39 535i (euro car) has the boot top diffuser aswell, but might have been an option for the larger engined models maybe? Luckily my own car came already fitted with a set of genuine E39 M5s by the previous owner, they really make the car!

    Thanks for the upload :-)

  • @charlieflint Thanks, glad you like yours! I've never seen or heard of the 535i... is it a 3.5 liter V6 or what?

  • @RyanKnowsTech

I've not had it for all that long but it's a beautiful car, so nice to drive! real road presence too.

Ahh good point, I don't think the 535i was available in the USA, just the European market for some reason. It's a 3.5 version of the M62 V8, a little down on power and torque compared to the 540i but it still makes all the right noises :-)

  • @RyanKnowsTech

Hi Ryan. The 3.5 is a 235HP v8, It never made it over to the states :-)

  • It's a 3.5 ltr V8, not V6.

  • @princepersia1 it's a 5 ltr v8 btw :P

  • I was talking about the 535i which the other guy talked about, you don't need to tell me the M5 is a 5 ltr V8 when I used to own one.

  • @princepersia1 oh OK sorry! :)

  • any problems with it?

  • @pitbull112005 Not a single issue. :)

  • you look so hungry ryan...

  • Hey Ryan, what is your opinion on Saabs?

  • @ysn370 Well build, safe cars, but I don't think I'd buy one. They look nice too, at least the newer ones.

  • i want one of these sooo badly

  • you're so fucking lucky

  • @4:28 dude u playing REGGAE MUSIC,thats so cool

  • e39 m5 was only 2000-2003, e39 was 1998-2003.

  • @peetiewonder There are tons of 1999 M5s around for sale here in the US...

  • @RyanKnowsTech

1999MY was Europe only. E39 M5 was not for sale in North America until 2000MY

  • @peetiewonder

    well in europe its 98-03

  • @peetiewonder e39 was !1996!-2003...

  • @peetiewonder - In Europe M5 came out in 98s too. Garbage reliability but it was still fast.

  • @peetiewonder

    e39 is from 1996

  • @henrivesi

    sorry, 1995

  • @peetiewonder no, e39 was 1995-2003 while the e39 M5 was from 1998-2003. Just a little mix up with your numbers, no big deal.

  • @peetiewonder no the e39 m5 was introduced late 1998. so e39 m5 98-03

  • @suepsetts Yeah i realized that. We didn't get the m5 on this side of the pond until 2000 though.

  • @peetiewonder Yes they're correct, you're wrong sorry, the M5 was introduced first in 1998 in europe and the E39 range was first released in 1995

  • @edkwon Got it bro, I don't see why you felt the need to corroborate that though.

  • @peetiewonder all good, just random internet 'knowitall' responses

  • ooooh I love it this series M5 man I hope I will finde one for 13 thousand good one .

  • E39 bad ass car!

  • great video and insight. i wish bmw still put the tool kits in the cars. just something i think can come in handy.

  • @kezboy1 They don't put them in anymore?

  • @kezboy1 im almost positive they don't. I know for sure they don't on current m3's. correct me if I'm wrong tho.

  • beautiful car man congrats. love the m5 spoiler on the back

  • in my opinion best M model ever.

I trully belive one day this will be colectors issue.

    great review.

  • Fuckin' beautiful.

  • Also, a sport button won't quicken you shift, seeing as how you have a manual transmission

  • @snowskateskate lol I realized that shortly after editing, hence the annotation. I'm used to speaking of sport buttons in my fathers car, the 355 F1 Spider.

  • the thing on the trunk lid is not called a diffuser; it's just a spoiler. Flush-mount spoiler or whatever. It's still a spoiler. A diffuser is the thing on the bottom of the rear bumper that channels air a certain way.

  • @snowskateskate Right, messed up on the terminology, sorry.

  • To this day I believe BMW has never made a FWD car.

    Besides MINIs

  • finally a good car review that is not professional, nice work man

  • Is the M5 also tuned down to pass US emission laws? The E36 M3 at least used to be only 240BHP in the US when the Eu model had 321BHP

  • @Spookyashell76 No, I don't think so. All US spec E39s produce 394BHP, at least when they were new.

  • @RyanKnowsTech

    Why do cars lose BHP?

  • @wiigamer136 Belts loosen and seals weaken over time.
