I don't know if this is awful, all over the place, sung with bad french etc., I would gladly pay two or three or four times to hear Caballe doing that than what people pay now for full recitals of todays leading singers.
Aw, shucks, y'all--cut the great lady some slack. By this point, she's in the 4th decade of a career plagued by ill health. And while it is an autumnal assumption of a difficult role, it's not that bad. Besides, the clip's sound quality isn't good. Check out her later recording of this air--it's better.
Wow, dissapointing performance from the lady of vocal control. She was a little all over the place with terrible French. The only part I found in the aria which utilised the extensive emotion required was the final phrase where she used a full chest voice, powerful, and a risk worth taking.
Of course, this aria is not for her voice (and not for Renata Scotto too)
But for the first time with this terrible aria, she succeeds in giving emotion and movement and she sings well most of the low notes: she really did her best.
So not marvellous at all but quite good, i think...
You will find many others performances of this aria by Caballé which are really uninteresting.
It's awkward...
