"Ugliness is a virtue in a city bicycle" - If you wanted to go one better, a step-through/women's frame makes the bicycle a whole pile less desirable. Thieves tend to go for flashy-looking Men's MTB's
You can get cycling caps, which have a soft brim, specifically made to be worn under a bicycle helmet. Mine actually improves the fit of my helmet by providing that little bit extra padding. It also helps reduce helmet hair.
Im from Ontario, California, and I commute to and from work 33 miles on a daily basis almost. I have alot of nice stuff on my bike, but I dont need the huge rack with 40 lbs of bags, and I replace my tires well before they show signs of long term wear or holes which can lead to flats more easily, plus het rid of the bell and get an airhorn cause no one is gonna hear thatiny bell of yours. But overall nice bike.
Yes, excellent. I have a newer aluminum Mtn bike I'm making more commute friendly(street tires, fenders, racks). I've been car-free for a few weeks now and healthier than ever before.

Make it work! Like you said, it's a junky looking bike, but it works for you. Ride on!

Thats because instead of fitting a brim to the helmet he's put a baseball cap on under. If he comes off he'll break his nose if he's unlucky.
As for the helmet mirrors....
