when you write a song, there poems in the beginning. Then you catch the rhythm, and recite them lyrically, and Peter is so talented at that. Fluentcie at its best.

my problem with this, is that pete's voice sounded great over libertines music, cos it fitted the rough and ready, fragile yeat sparky quality. In this context he just sounds weak and out of tune. here's hoping the libertines reform

You're crazy. Pete's voice is so strong on this album. It is deeper and stronger than I've heard it before. I've never understood the knocks that Pete gets for his voice. He consistently bettered Carl when they sang take care- his crooning is better on Death on the Stairs and he blasts Carl on the Likely Lads.

Sure bring back the Libertines but they've gotta meet the new standard set by the solo album and DPT's RASN

he was a better singer than carl agreed, but that's mainly because of the passion in his voice, and the heartache. carl was always more in tune, if less interesting. i'm sorry but it's true. i just think that to sing songs like these you need to really be able to hold a melody, which is why i think carl barat, if he goes acoustic, will be a better solo artis, but will lack the lyrical invention and intensity of pete. therefore we need the libertines back. they make an incredible duo

No, I think Peter's voice is generally stronger than Carl's. It's much louder at least. I also think Pete relies on more than passion when he sings. He manipulates his voice. Just check out The Sweet By and By and try to sing like that. I hope Carl does a solo album but you shouldn't put down Carl's songwriting ability or his passion. RASN was a masterpiece and Carl displayed a whole new side. I'm totally with you about a new Libs album but I just hope it maintains high standards.

Just one more thing. Listened to Up the Bracket lot recently and Carl's vocals seem to rely more on passion than Pete's. Pete's singing is more studied. Both are great at guitar and vocals but Pete has the edge singing and Carl at guitar playing.

You're betraying your ignorance of rock and roll by comparing Peter to Noel. Peter is a million miles better (better singer, better songwriter and more original guitarist). Noel deserves a lot of credit, however, for keeping the light of British rock and roll alight during the twenty year gap between the Smiths and the Libertines.

I think Pete's lyrics are clear, simple and personal. Noel has to write anthems to compensate for his limited style (although he has written about 5 great songs). Pete's music is too emotionally direct to be anthemic. Great pop stars like the Smiths, Beatles, Prince and Libs don't generally write anthems.
