@superbatian thank you uso what many dont know is that many of the Tui Tonga's were half Samoan half Tongan starting with the first Tui Tonga who's father was said to have been a powerful Samoan Chief of Manu'a and mother TOngan woman of great noble birth.
@LEIonce .. its not a tongan title .. but a title derived from that historical event everyones talkin about ... yeaaah tui toga (tongan king) left when he was defeated and said - MALIE TOA ua MALO TAU (won the battle) peaaaaaaace :)
Fa'afetai lava. I fa'amanuiaina lava a outou galuega.
Note that not all funeral si'is are this elaborate but because of Malietoa's status being paramount (his title and Head of State position) you can see that the manaias are outfitted in their tuigas (headress), the aumagas (non-matai) sporting weapons (axes & shot gun)...it's all out of reverence and respect to Malietoa
To put it simply, that's the si'i toga (presentation and exchanging of gifts - fine mats, money & food) from Manu Samoa Falealili District to the grieving Malietoa family. Other districts and villages also took their si'is (Lufilufi, Solosolo)
All the districts and villages that have a genealogical connection to the SaMalietoa (the Malietoa clan) did their presentations. Given that the Malietoa is one of the most important titles in Samoa with connections to all corners of Samoa and to Tonga and Fiji, there were quite a few districts, sub-districts, and villages, and foreign delegations who presented their si'i.
@jwul004 very true even the current ruling Family in Tonga has connections to the Malietoa Family its connection deals with a Samoan Chief named Ama of Safata who left Samoa and settled in Tonga. There the Samoans established themselves in Mu'a, tatakamotonga and hihifo it is in Hihifo the Tui Kanokupolu (Flesh of Upolu) Line was born and today the Tui Kanokupolu (Flesh Of Upolu) Line currently rule TONGA.
Love the footage of Malietoa being interviewed in Manu'a and Sunia's faaaloalo e faamuamua le ava a le Tapaau Faasisina. This is the stuff of true Samoan pride and respect. Malo!!

@LEIonce Tongan title? You mean a title created by the SAMOANS from a defeated Kings speech right?
SacTownUso 1 year ago
@SacTownUso correct :)
Words spoken by the defeated King of Tonga upon fleeing the shores of Samoa:
'Malie toa' (great warrior/s)
'Malie tau' (great/well-fought battle)

Please explain the ceremony that starts at 9:13. I speak very little samoan. Understand the importance but not the substance. Faafetai lava.
