Cyd Charisse, la mejor, como profesional y artista, hermosa mujer, todos sus trabajos fueron excelentes, este por su aparente simpleza, el mejor, el más bello.-
One of the greatest dancing numbers in history! The music is very important here. There's something so sad in it. It sounds almost as a "good by" to an era -- a great era that will never come back (I'm not sentimental, I'm realistic).
I love the parody that Steve Martin and Gilda Radner did of this. I first saw it when Martin hosted Saturday Night Live and Miss Gilda had died several days before and they showed it as a remembrance to her.
COMO JOIAS,COLOQUEI NO ORKUT,AO ALCANCE DE MINHAS MÃOS,UM MOMENTO,QUE SÓ DOIS,UM CASAL,COM EMPATIA,JOGO DE CINTURA,INTEGRADOS,NA MENTE E ALMA,PRODUZIRIAM,HA TEMPOS,QUE MESMO ASSIM,NÃO IMPORTA,POIS NÃO EXISTE IDADE,PARA O BELO,PARA O CONJUNTO,QUE BAILA,NO SILENCIO DO PARK,DEIXANDO PARA NÓS,POBRES MORTAIS,UM INSTANTE DE GLÓRIA,QUE NEM TODOS O SABEREMOS JAMAIS,POIS ,OLHOS,MUITOS NÃO TEM E,MESMO SE TIVESSEM,NÃO VERIAM COM OS OLHOS DA ALMA.LINDO!!!
Fred Astaire was once asked on a TV talk show who his favorite dance partner was. He replied that he loved them all but if he had to pick one it would be Cyd Charisse. One look at this and you can see why. They're both about 75% leg!
You know, even in the part in the beginning where they're just walking is graceful. I could watch those two just take a stroll... but then that lovely moment when Cyd sets off the dance, and Fred follows... wow.
J'adore.
A perfect courtship dance. The end with them dancing up the stairs is all kinds of wicked. Even in ballet flats, Cyd had the longest, most exquisite legs on film.
youyong28 mentioned that Gene Kelly said that this was the best dance ever filmed. I think Gene was right. This is so superb on a number of different levels as many other posters have thoughtfully brought out. Two masters at the top of their craft. It doesn't get any better than this.
This is one of those moments when all the years of training and honing the craft of each person involved in this production coalesces to produce this masterpiece. It is for the ages.
The most erotic (as opposed to pornographic) dance number ever filmed, to the music of one of the most philosphical/religious tunes ever written. (Read the lyrics, if you don't believe me.)
Dance as foreplay, dance as the ACT itself...
...and notice, as they get into the carriage, how...
Indeed. If you wanted to explain the concept of "sublimation" to someone you could do worse than play this video. I still remember the shock of recognition when I first watched it at an age that allowed me to realize what was happening on screen, in plain sight. It was like suddenly receiving a message that had previously passed me by unnoticed. And then of course the very peculiar wistfulness in which my elders had always held Astaire and Charisse quite suddenly made perfect sense!
Fred Astaire said "when you dance with Cyd Charisse, you stay danced with"!
She was a tremendous dancer in her own right. But every Astaire partner always looks like a great dancer with him. He knew it wasn't just about him but the beauty of the dance and the grace and beauty of his partner.
Actually, this might be the most famous of either dancer's repertoire. It was the only dance featuring Cyd in "That's Entertainment", and Gene Kelly said that it was the best dance ever filmed.
When was the last time something as beautiful and romantic was done. It's hard to remember. These days romance consists of two women kissing each other in the bathtub.
Not the most famous of either dancer's repertoire or partners - but this is my favorite dance sequence of all time. We'll never see this particular blend of class and talent again. Thanks for posting it.
Watching The Bandwagon with Liza Minnelli and Michael Feinstein's commentary on really enriched the viewing experience, you pick up a lot about the history of all involved and about Broadway. BTW Bandwagon is both Liza and Michael's favorite musical, ever. Pretty awesome.
