Fred Astaire was once asked on a TV talk show who his favorite dance partner was. He replied that he loved them all but if he had to pick one it would be Cyd Charisse. One look at this and you can see why. They're both about 75% leg!

C'est génial. La corégraphie, l'élégance des danseurs, leur sensualité, la simplicité de la mise en scène (pas d'effets spéciaux, juste une caméra au service des danseurs pour montrer leurs talents). Et puis surtout les arrangements musicaux sont sublimes. Les cordes et les cuivres se répondent en permanence pour finir en symbiose dans la montée finale. C'est sublimisisme. C'est une des plus belles scènes du cinéma d'Hollywood. J'adore.

Indeed. If you wanted to explain the concept of "sublimation" to someone you could do worse than play this video. I still remember the shock of recognition when I first watched it at an age that allowed me to realize what was happening on screen, in plain sight. It was like suddenly receiving a message that had previously passed me by unnoticed. And then of course the very peculiar wistfulness in which my elders had always held Astaire and Charisse quite suddenly made perfect sense!

Watching The Bandwagon with Liza Minnelli and Michael Feinstein's commentary on really enriched the viewing experience, you pick up a lot about the history of all involved and about Broadway. BTW Bandwagon is both Liza and Michael's favorite musical, ever. Pretty awesome.
