  • Does anyone have an opinion on how the Sony NEX-FS100 measures up against the Canon D5 Mk2 for night shooting? Are they almost equal when filming without extra lights at night? I'm an amateur film maker looking for my first camera and the D5 Mk2 seemed the way to go before our school purchased this Sony. Thanks

  • Wait a few years and these will be on ebay for $1200!!

  • @GanEdenAustralia hmm doubt it

  • I have been wondering a long time, but I doubt it; even so, I wanted to know ¿Can this camcorder be used for TV broadcasting? Cheers.

  • im still better with the Canon 5D

  • This is the way forward not DSLR's shooting in video mode.....

  • @JDMVideographing It costs over £5000 without a lens, thats hardly a viable alternative to a DSLR for a budget film maker. I somehow doubt we will be seeing a large format interchangable lens camcorder that can rival DSLRs for the same price point.

  • @StupidlyRandom That is a good point but bare in mind that for £2.000 what you get is a DSLR with the standard wide angle lens. Its not designed to be a Video camera. Its £2.000 max for the DSLR plus the accessorise, SLR Cinema mount rigs (For a good rig another 1-2 grand) A good monitor, Beachtek XLR convertor for 2 pro XLR outputs (Which baring in mind the NEX-fs100 has already got two XLR outputs) a good eye peice for the DSLR LCD monitor, A follow focus rig. The list goes on.

  • @JDMVideographing Not really a fair comparison; a GH2 only costs £750. All you really need is a Beachtek/Juicelink to add the XLR inputs for £250. This would give you phantom power as well, which you won't get with the Sony. The GH2 kit lens is optimised for video; it has useable, silent autofocus and a smooth iris. The Sony still would need to go on some sort of rig, with a follow focus and monitor just like a DSLR.

  • @StupidlyRandom Depends really on what your shooting. I don't agree with DSLR's being converted to video cameras. Fair enough it maybe cheaper in some ways but if you really are going for a professional rig why not just go for a professional video camera like this 35mm one? I would never choose a Beachtek adaptor over built in XLR inputs because 9V's do not last two seconds especially on phantom power. You have a point dont get me wrong but videocameras are designed to be videocameras.

  • @JDMVideographing Of course, ideally everyone would ideally shoot Red/F65 or whatever expensive high-end camera. But I'm talking about budget film making, or film making in extreme run-and-gun situations where it would not be practical/physically possible to carry around such a big camera. This is why DSLRs will not die. You get around 10 hours of battery life with the Beachtek, not too unreasonable. Just because its not designed to be a videocamera, it doesn't stop it functioning as one.

  • @StupidlyRandom Well yes of course. I use a Beachtek XLR adaptor for my FX1 & that only last 4 hours on a full 9V & only 45 mins on Phantom. DSLR have a fantastic qulity for the price. But im talking more about this budget film making (4-8 Grand) for freelancers. What im saying is with that kind of Budget i would buy the FS100 over a DSLR.

  • @JDMVideographing yes commonsense dictates that the FS100 is a better choice than DSLR. Canon will now make no improvements to the 5D and go produce a camcorder to compete with the FS100

  • @StupidlyRandom DSLR for vid and film making will die. A 5D with a long lens is as big as the FS100 camcorder. I own a 5D and I see I will go over to FS100 camcorder. It has super53mm plus intergrated pro audio

This has been made to return people to camcorders. Canon will follow with a camcorder similar to this thing. 5D relegated to being the still camera as was intended

  • @alanbstard4 Until affordable, large-sensor consumer camcorders exist, DSLRs will not die. As I said, the FS100 costs over £5000 without a lens, hardly a viable alternative to a DSLR for a budget film maker. The GH2, a £650 camera, can shoot 42mb/s 1080p with IQ that is 95% of the Sony; precisely why DSLRs are going to be around for a while...

  • @StupidlyRandom another $600US for Sony 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Zoom Lens for NEX Camera. $5,700 odd for the camera. If you have lenses already, you don't need buy a lens

  • @alanbstard4 Who's going to stick a non-constant aperture, varifocal $600 lens on a $5700 camera?

  • @StupidlyRandom Anyone who likes to do it.

  • @alanbstard4 Well said! :)

  • @JDMVideographing not really, a 550d + 50mm 1.8, 18-50mm f/2.8 and a 55-250mm zoom will be about £1100, and a LCD viewfinder (£45), cheap shoulder pad (£40), mounting rails (£150), and a juicelink for like £150 and your all set, thats about £1600 total!!!! so basically 3 times less thn a super 35mm... and with the leftover money you could buy a JIB, camera slider, follow focus, and a couple more lenses, and if you switch the 550d for a 35mm slr like a 5d the total still comes at about £2700,!!!

  • @JDMVideographing exactly. The 5D is a false economy. I know, I own one, plus shooting reality type shows the 5D has too much DOF. DOF great for arty films, not reality. The AgAf from Pana is better for reality and when shown on TV no one knows the difference between 35 mm & 4/3 anyway

  • @alanbstard4 Funily enough, the Panasonic AF100 has worse IQ than the GH2; it has the same sensor as the GH1, but in a bigger body with pro controls. As for too shallow DOF on the 5D, you know how to stop down, don't you?

  • @StupidlyRandom GH2 is a nice camera. Yes I can stop the 5D down, but after having spoken to the director, and the shop i bought the 5D from, I was given the impression it would be better to go 4/3 or even 2/3

I run a little production company and shoot stuff fpr pay TV, and use the 5D for incidental stuff and in reality type TV DOF artistry is not important

  • @StupidlyRandom tell that to companies who are not going to keep this going for film makers. They are after the millions of people who take photos and video for private reasons. the 5D is a still camera and to outfit it for proper film work with all that aftermarket bullshit costs more than the FS100. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a moron

You must think of what the company is thinking. Canon will bring out competition to the FS100

    FS100 cheaper for film makers

  • @alanbstard4 Camera makers may target the masses, but that does not mean that the products work well for film-makers. Panasonic made the GH2 for consumers who want a good stills/video hybrid, but it works fantastically well for film-making. Canon will not stop putting HD video in their entry level cameras to help sell them to consumers and they will not stop putting them in their pro line as it is essential for photo-journalists; that is what the company is thinking.

  • @alanbstard4 Also, I'm very interested in how you think it costs £3000+ to kit out a DSLR; it does not. The FS100 equally needs kitting out with a decent monitor, rig, follow focus and microphone if you take it seriously. The only difference with the DSLR is the need for an audio recorder/XLR adapter.

  • not really a review

  • VERY COOL. VERY NICE REVIEW!

  • Man, saving up my money for this one!

  • All I can say is WOW, makes my camera look like a gopro
