I doubt that the attack is really programmed to create a sweet spot - it's something you rationalize after the event, because a randomized distribution with a small sample size is inevitably going to be uneven, while humans love to look for patterns.
By the way, another long, slow but safe method you can use for the rocks is to let them stack up and tunnel under the top layer. I remember as a wee child, waiting for them to fill the whole tunnel so I could change the background to the "ruined" sprite instead of the "pristine" one. And yes, I know you knew about it- maybe some other people didn't.

I'm curious, since you're such a fan of extreme pain, if you play that OTHER masochist genre: bullet-hell shooters (Touhou Project?).
