I doubt Rome will ever reach a higher state of architectural and infrastructural grandeur relative to how it was in ancient times. And this is probably because Rome is no longer the capital of the Roman Empire, but merely the capital of Italy...

Too bad Romans didn't utilize passive solar heating. According to legend, Archimedes ( 287 BC – c. 212 BC) built a parabolic solar reflector weapon. Passive solar energy would easy of heated the baths. In fact, they could have gone much much further with passive solar energy.

The Greeks also failed to heat their baths with the hypocaust ( heating ) system. The sun would hardly be enough to warm the tepidarium ( warm bath ) to a medium heat, let alone the caldarium ( hot bath ) which was supposed to be very hot. Solar heating wasn't nearly advanced enough to make that sort of system.

So no, you're wrong. They couldn't have gone much further with passive solar energy. The hypocaust was the most advanced system at the time for a reason.
