  • Before Prince, Michael Jackson, and Rick James (Bitch) Sly was the ultimate interracial band. Everyone in the audience seemed to get along.

  • A dance mix played live. As it always should be.

  • God damnit I love this

  • I want the woman in pink to wake me up every morning.

  • so he was before Prince...and Little Richard was before Sly...and Louis Armstrong was before Little Richard...and Jellyroll Morton was before Louis Armstrong...so what's your point exactly?

  • 03:58 camera cuts to a young Michael Jackson in the audience......taking notes.

  • 7:24 rhythm fail

  • @rainificationstation godamned white folk!

  • Comment removed

  • Sweet...too bad Sly Stone is now living out of his van in South Central L.A.-and he can't even live off his music publishing rights since he sold to Michael Jackson for a "measley 1 million"

    Man...this band is getting down!

  • cool

  • Remember watchin this as a kid...WOW, much better than I remember!

  • Can you reach? Mi head that it isn't very nice to make people talk with their mouth full... :*}

  • Sly & The Family Stone are one of the few groups that can appeal to everybody. If you cant get into them, you should not be listening to music.

  • Oh man, this is damn good. I thought it was just 1 song. Pleasant surprise.

  • One of the 1st albums i owned in the 70s.

  • Holy....these guys cook live, and 5 out of 7 sing too.

  • One of the greatest live bands ever. They could make time stand still.

  • Regardless of the comments made by the "nay-say nit-pickers"...this is some rare and incredible footage!!!

What energy this group offered to anyone with an ear to hear and a soul to enjoy!!!

Many thanks to you for posting this gem!

  • Music, love, peace and harmony. :)

  • This wonderful shit was going down the year I was born.

    It's in my blood.

  • This is music

  • 03:05 -Cousin Smitty is gettin it!!! Gon' head then.

  • @bigtoine45 : Ha ha...I love your comment!!! I talk the EXACT same way when someone's "gettin it" but sometimes it's hard to convey on the computer!

  • the video and audio is slightly out of sync. Great video though!!!

  • the video and sound seem to be slightly out of sync. Great video though!!!

  • They sent Chuck Berry into space; which is totally cool. But, they should have sent this on another flight. Maybe out there, somewhere, someone would think we still have a chance here on earth.

    PEACE

  • Whos offbeat

  • We all played in inter-racial bands in the 60s because its was all about the music

  • Where's the rhythm though, everybody is offbeat

  • "THE MUSIC SCENE" was a 45 minute weekly series that aired on ABC's Monday night schedule [7:30-8:15pm(et)] from September 1969 through January 1970, paired with another short-lived 45 minute show, "THE NEW PEOPLE" (sort of the "LOST" of its day, minus the sci-fi and fantasy elements), at 8:15. Unfortunately, more viewers were watching CBS' "GUNSMOKE" and NBC's "ROWAN & MARTIN'S LAUGH-IN", and that's why they both went off the air so fast.

  • Thanks for this! This is what YouTube is all about. Definitely a nominee for best video on YouTube.

  • Sly's music was head and shoulders over almost anything that's out today. I keep hoping for Sly to come back with some awesome new material, but after seeing the videos from Coachella last year and other recent disasters like the Grammys, it doesn't look promising right now. Sly looks damn near incoherent, with nothing left in the tank. PLEASE SLY!!! GET IT TOGETHER AND COME BACK! THE WORLD NEEDS YOU!!!

  • Cynthia Robinson & Jerry Martini are still rockin it. Sly, God bless 'em, we always have to talk about in the past tense because of what the drugs did to him. His music brought joy around the world and defined a generation but as great as he was, so much was lost. This is the best clip I've seen in a long while. Thanks for posting.

  • as a musician, i look at sly like hes damn near jesus christ... he had a lot of great positive things to say in his songs and he had such a PERFECT blend of sound that is unsurpassed and such a soulful voice

  • Hey the sax player looks just like Mitch Hedberg...

  • Sly you always take me HIGHER!

  • great post man -

  • Thank's for uploading this- a classic ! long live the funk !!!!!!!

  • hell yeh

  • oo im glad i was born in tha 80's cause those out fits are funny as shizzzz

  • Gotta love the Funk, man! It's not constrained to any one race or gender, and you can get crazy with it! Sweet video!

  • Damn, this video blew me away, man!!!!

  • yeah the BEP* are just naive pups in comparison with these awesome musicians... they just did it naturally... ya can't FAKE that talent!!!

    * (BEP = just overhyped trendy wannabes)

  • the family will rock for all time!

  • yep...... he and the band were the best......... and heavily influenced many others... damn those drugs though.... he's very f- -k- d these days, sad.

  • god id love to live through a time like this.

everyone just rejoices and jams with one another.:)

  • You can hear all of these old school 80-2001 jamz on zmix97.com

  • laughin me ass off at the kid in the audience singin with Sly's voice haha... fuckin best video I've ever seen on youtube

  • woooow the crowd dancing and grooving with them on stage!!! Something you"ll never find again today....

  • Inter-racial, inter-gender...WAY before Prince...and an audience of all colors GROOVING. We need Sly today.

  • 2 people got no soul

  • And that fuckin bass sounds like a dinosaur chewin up cars!! My god!!

  • I'd give me balls to have been there

  • Rose is STR8-UP kickin' ass!!!

  • yep...Sly was ahead of his time. Great, great songs and performer.

  • Nice clothes, psychedelic behaviour, crazy times.

  • @Delomenalicom Indeed pal!!!

  • Just reading Ben Fong-Torres from 1969 in Rolling Stone. The instrumental track for this show was recorded beforehand by Sly and the band so the TV producers wouldn't have to mix it and perhaps screw it up. Also this was the second take of the performance as Sly was not happy with the lack of audience dancing during the first take so he got his "people" to encourage them.

  • @tracks888 I'll have to read it for myself, but this definitely sounds totally live in real time. I'll buy it on some parts, but not the whole thing. It's also hard to believe that a TV show that features live acts wouldn't have professional sound people around to produce live music.

    PEACE

  • @tracks888: So I guess that 'The Music Scene' wasn't as cracked up as it was supposed to be, then.

  • Tony Clomax & Ohene Cornelius Have a fabulous video shoot tomorrow!

  • love Larry Graham's hat! They sound good live.

  • Probably my favorite thing about this band, besides the innovation, and music - is the way the almost.....demanded respect. Gotta love a band that went for what was what.

  • Where's Bootsie?????????????

  • Whats wrong with his face?

  • you have to love the "man" in the blue sweater, any swishier and he could fly!!

The Sax player seems to have the most fun

  • you have to love the "man" in the blue sweater, any swishier and he could fly!!

  • I saw this show in 69. I thought they were way cool. Their Woodstock set was phenomenal. I saw them the net summer in Milwaukee WI at Summerfest...Thank U 4 lettin me Be Mice Elf Again.

  • A racially mixed band in the 60s was very rare and it works so well. The white saxophone seems to really get into the music!! None of the crap being sung today comes close.

  • Thank you thank you for this video! Funky soul at its very best... thank you dear Sly for this timeless music.

  • no auto tune here at all.

and they sound just as good as they recorded.

  • Can anyone help? What did Cynthia do after this? I've tried to find recordings of her since S&FS - doesn't seem to be much. What a band!

  • @grf01000 Cynthia is still playing as well as

Jerry Martini the saxophonist, they are now the Sly and the Family Stone Review. Still sounding good. Had a chance to speak with her and Jerry during during a concert last summer.

  • lol the dude in blue at 3:03 even if he can't dance he 's still tryin'

  • the girl at 3:56 liked that larry graham!

  • 7:48 sly's greatest time...

  • I think the girl liked what she heard at 3:56

  • Go Cynthia!

  • How many times have you ever seen actual crowd actually get up on the stage with the performers grill and the performers embrace the crowd like this

  • the more I see of Sly, and I've been crazy about him for 30 years now, the more I'm convinced he is the greatest of all the figures in music in the 60s-70s

  • loooooovee it!! love this part 1:30

  • Just soooooooooo good.

  • as beautiful now as it was then...

  • ironicly color cordinated in 69..

    .

  • Being a teenager during this time has really spoiled me: between Music Scene, the Midnight Special, and (yes), Ed Sullivan I was exposed to great music actually being PERFORMED rather than lip synched (American Bandstand, Soul Train). These are absolute gems and I am so glad to relive them!

  • take us higher above all this garbage

  • On abc

  • Nigger dont call me whitey, whitey dont call me nigger

  • awesome.

  • brilliance! Music this good is gone!

  • Who can touch it people? Scorching

  • My parents saw them in Philadelphia when they were at their peak, my father still talks about it being an experience rather than a concert. This is a true band, relying on prue talent not studio tricks.

  • At their prime as a "band". killin it!

  • a real band for sure!

  • BANDS OF THIS TIME PERIOD

    SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE

    THE BARKAYS

MADE ALL THOSE LATER BANDS POSSIBLE AND I MEAN ALL OF THEM

  • the black eyed peas couldn't pump the gas for this band...

  • This is some TIMELESS shit!

  • bielsouza, I remember watching this particular show. Thanks for the walk down memory lane...and thanks for a great video.

  • that's the legendary bass player Larry Graham in black

  • AND they were a racially mixed band!!

  • @PiggusVomitus And this diversity fueled their greatest .... a lesson for today as well!

  • in my opinion sly stone is as much the legacy of the church of god in christ as andre crouch. i hear all the chord progrssions, rifs and runs the mood and feel that were so popular in that church during that era. as a matter of fact the song "i wanna take you higher" was a popular chant among the young people in the cogic during that time. the break in this song is nothing more than an old gospel song "this little light of mine im gonna let it shine" let it shine let it shine let it shine!

  • 3:00 lawls at the tall guy on the right side with the big smile and awkward hand clapping.

Although im a modern day music listener (Which i know will never be as good as this but i admit is very catchy) i know that without music like this and all the music that revolutionized our society we'd be in a far worse state then our world is in right now. Stop the Hate and Lets Live Together <3

  • Unbelievable .... does any current group come close to this ..... the diversity, the meaning and the beat!

  • @thedoggiesdaddy I totally agree. What a concept this band was. Songs with intelligence and incredible groove.

  • The keyboard girl in yellow got mad swagga, shes cool

  • @wcc128

That's Rose Stone, Sly's sistah. Love her.

  • Witness a true genius at the height of his powers. You have not rocked until you've rocked a house like Sly and the Family Stone.

  • THEIR INFLUENCE IS SO IMPORTANT

  • THIS IS THE BEST MUSIC

  • U Da Godfather to Larry Grahm. From Ya Girl Misz Angie B

    Keyword:Text getMiszAngieB 2 88704

  • LUV IT *

  • I wonder how much Sly influenced Prince...

  • wow, i heard their music before but i had no idea. Definetely Genious work, i love what happened in his last show. Hehhee, it all a part of genious. We can't expect the same stuff and want new at the same time.

  • I've watched this video countless times and nothing tops the funkyfresh dance moves of the girl at 6:42.

    That chick can GROOVE!

  • Great stuff. All this is available on DVD now. BTW, Anybody knows the cause of guest host, Christopher Ross' death?

  • This was scary to the establishment !

  • @markbra: How so?

  • This is no play-back !

  • Sly & the Family Stone were the greatest!!! I'm just sorry we couldn't have had more years with him and his great funky music. He truly is an icon. "Hot Fun", "Dance to the Music" and "Stand" are a few of my fav's that bring back great memories of the time back then - I still have my albums:). As Aliquippawill said below - They were a Kick-Ass band!!

  • greg goes into overdrive at 2:31 thats how you groove man

  • I like Sly's glasses

  • at 3:54

  • Young Michaell Jackson at School.

  • Hot Fun in the Summertime. My absolute favorite Sly and the Family Stone song. It's great too, that they didn't lip-sync it.

  • i don't see why people are comparing sly and the family stone to black eyed pea's. not even the same kind of music, not even the same era. Why, because there's black dudes and women? comparing the two is like comparing 50 cent to elvis. get real.

  • @DiCkRiChArDz: Look, just ignore them when they say things like that, and they'll go away.

  • black eyed WHAT ???????---there would be no black eyed peas,,,,,,,,oh man---just give Sly his due---- there are so many ignorant young people out there who have NO CLUE as to what talent is--- I saw the black eyed peas on some idiotic awards show-- grammys or something in past 30 days-- they were a joke--- give me Sly toned out of his gourd any day--more talent in one stoned pinky than any peas,,

  • @jrmrinaz: As I said to somebody else, just ignore them if they say that. There's no sense in getting high blood pressure over this. They love their music...you love yours.

  • WOW, there's just no denying....Sly & the family stone could flat-out kick the funk!! Great video clip. I LOVE that back line of Fender amps.

  • Amen!!

  • I'd wear any of that shit except for Slys shirt lol

  • The black eyed peas aint got nothing on Sly and the Family Stone.

  • @TNA52383 you got that right bro...

  • @TNA52383 Black eyed peas are a marketing trend. None of them can even play instruments. So, saying that the Peas got nothing on Sly is actually a dis.

  • @TNA52383 the black eyes shits are soooooooooo bad, I saw in SNL and are really bad, sly is a true artist: music, composition, cloth, performance, style, junkie hahaha etc... true genious

  • @TNA52383 you're on the money with this comment

  • @TNA52383 And that statement even needed to be said because? WE KNOW THIS MAN!! The kids don't tho. Play it for em' young and they will build up an appreciation. My 8 y/o sings "Everyday people" with me, how sweet is that?! I love all the music my parents and grandparents played for me as a kid and if we do that for our kids instead of putting them in front of a t.v or internet (God forbid) we will have a musical future. If not...well....sadness.

  • @Econoliveme: Want to create a 'musical future'? Encourage you kid to participate in THE LOCAL MUSIC SCENE instead of telling them that nothing's great these days.

  • Ya think?

  • @TNA52383: Okay, maybe they don't, but have you ever heard of K'nan? Corrine Bailey Rae? Joss Stone?

  • Comment removed

  • lol can you imagin all of us dressed like that now..lol

  • i'd be very happy

  • Sly & the Family Stone were so creatively ahead of their time, they would be an absolute force on todays music scene......WITH THE SAME MUSIC! Sly was such a brilliantly innovative songwriter, with (unfortunately), all the eccentricities that sometimes accompany being an artistic "genius". The man was "out there", to say the least......but DAMN! What an entertainer! With a Kick-Ass band who were definately unique trendsetters. There was no one like them.....and there still isn't!

  • @aliquippawill, IMO S & TFS was the most entertaining act at woodstock. As a young man, I saw most of the major acts in the late 60's, 70's & 80's. My biggest regret was never seeing S & TFS live. However, I did have tickets for a concert in Louisville, KY that Sly failed to show for.

  • @aliquippawill

I am watching this video in the room I first heard Sly when I was a baby girl- by chance.

He still cannot be topped. I have been all over the map musically and Sly is still on top.

  • @aliquippawill

They could still be a force in music, If Sly would actually show up!

  • The band was wonderful and tight but the drummer was kinda lost...

  • WTF

  • The Funkmaster himself, Sly Stone. There's never been nothing like him, and the band was tight. They were the first group to crossover to a universal audience. Even Motown changed the style of The Temptations music in the late 60's and early 70's because they were so influenced by Sly and the Family Stone. And that says it all!

  • I was in high then and Sly was the hottest thing out. Larry Graham was still with the group. Nobody played bass like Larry Graham. 55 year old school lova

  • Wow very nice medley special, during that time i was conceived and now i know why i am that groovy : )

  • that just made my day :)

  • Sly Stone - A GREAT TALENT!!!

  • Pimpin' hat at 1:46 !

  • Wow - a band inviting the audience to come up and grove with them while they play - awesome !!!!

  • Sly and The Family Stone was the only group I knew who could sing a different version of their hit songs and still make it even FUNKIER !!!

  • What's the song around 5:00?

  • It looks like this song from Phil Collins I forgot the title.

  • Its one their songs called "Dont call me N***** Whitey!"

  • this REAL

  • You young people need to watch these bands and find out what real music is

  • 8:03 Dope BEat.

  • The young boy at 3:55 says it all....Ohhh yeah!

  • I thought that was a girl? but AGREED!

  • @eclctcmnd that was a young lady 3:55

  • Man oh man these cats MF rock!

  • Incredible performance! Just saw their live spot on the Ed Sullivan Show, which was recorded a year or two before this one, & they still kicked ass for days! We don't EVER see bands these days, on live, network, tv, show out anywhere near this intensity!

  • @StevenCharlesJazz: hey, they're still around-it's called 'live performance' and 'getting your ass up off of the chair and going out to see what's cookin' in the local music scene!'

  • @Neville6000 : If you look, I was talking about on "live TV", yes I see bands playing live, as I've been doing that myself for decades. I've even played with Sly's sax player a number of times...

  • Defenetly one of the BEST live playing groups ever!!!

  • This is LIVE! Unfreaking UNREAL! I can't believe my ears! The sound is just perfect in everyway!

  • Best band eva

  • Now that's real music. It gets now better than that.

  • What a kickass band, one of the best performance ever, thanks for posting.
