I fell asleep! I usually do when people attempt to convince others about their extremely irrationally opinions! You used irrelevant facts! You should've said "this is my extremely unbalanced & unpopular opinion b/c..." Because most people turn it off after they hear 'The BEACH BOYS are better than The Beatles!" LMAO is what 1st comes to mind because it's my OPINION you either have 'no clue' about who those Beatles really were, or your taste in music is truly terrible! Top of the head I got 5 w
The bad Beach Boys material would probably be really early 60s stuff (before Today! Pet sounds and whatever) and their late 70s stuff. Today, Pet Sounds, Smiley Smile, Wild Honey, Friends, 20/20, Sunflower and Surf's Up are all masterpieces
I'm just getting into the Beach Boys seriously so you helped w/ some of the "bio" stuff. I agree with your arguments the Beach Boys deserve more respect. The Beatles may have been the better band in some ways but there was something in Brian's melodies and the harmonizing the band did that I don't get/feel with the Beatles. Anyway great vid and I enjoed your opinions!
to me is just plain wrong because Sgt.Pepper was a great well orchestrated and somewhat more diversified album compared to Pet Sounds...so having said the way i describe the Beatles and the Beachboys is like comparing a Supermarket to a store
I think that the Beachboys were incredible geniuses specially Brian Wilson who made innovative sounds like Pet sounds and Good Vibrations and a few of (with a help from Dennis sugestion) surfin music...i think that Pet Sounds was a very decent album but in my heart with all due respect (and believe me that i've learned to respect alot the BB to a point that their surfing image could've been the reason for little lack of credibility) But to say that Pet Sounds is at the same level as Sgt.Pepper
The Beach Boys are undoubtedly a great band, one of the very few bands that can even be compared to The Beatles. I think there is a general consensus that The Beatles are the better band, but the Beach Boys still stand out as one of those great bands that survived the transition from early rock n roll to the more psychedelic late 1960's. The only others that could do this and maintain success were The Beatles and Bob Dylan, which is some pretty nice company if you ask me.
honestly you people are kind of pathetic the way you argue with such pretentiousness over which rock band was better and who had more number 1's and all of that shit. so much shit coming out of your mouths. just listen to the goddamn songs and whichever ones you like more listen to those more often. it's really not such a big fucking deal. there's a whole world going on while you argue about the beatles vs. the beach boys.
I totally agree, the Beach Boys are SO underrated. My personal favorite album of all time is Revolver, but after that is Pet Sounds... it's just so perfect. Growing up, my parents exclusively played the Beach Boys- it was literally all I knew. I also thought of them as simply fun songs to listen to. Now, I really appreciate them for what they are. Going back to how you said that you wished the Beach Boys had quit earlier, there is one thing I wish they had done post-Pet Sounds: finish "Smile".
When it came down to compositions I think Wilson had the edge compared to Lennon/McCartney basiclly because of the Beatles having Sir George Martin produce most of their songs. Overall the more talented band I would say was the Beatles because of thier vast amount of songs to choose to put on an album. I think many people like to compare the songwritersof the two bands and Wilson did not just write every song but also composed using harmonies unheard of at the time for every member.
@brian19831 how many songs did martin write? the thing with the beatles. paul of john could sing any type of song.. paul yesterday to helter skelter or lennon in my life to revolution.. the beach boys could never sing rock songs cause they didnt have that style of voice.. the same old stuff all the time.. they could NOT change with the times therefore they faded away.. the Beatles stayed ahead of the music.. and also the Beatles could make it on their own. boys could not.. Y? talent..
One thing I learned from Full Sail University is that if you ever wanna go into the Recording music today, Petsounds and Revolver are the two albums that you are required to listen too and study.
The main difference between this 2 great groups is that The Beatles had 2 genius (Lennon/McCarney) while the Beach Boys only had one (Brian Wilson). The Beach Boys are my favourite band :) but to be honest, The Beatles have a lot of more good songs than the Beach Boys (as I said, cos Beatles had 2 genius).
For me 'I get around' is the best song ever, and other songs like 'God only knows' or 'Wouldn't it be nice' are better than 'Yesterday' or 'Hey Jude'.
Beach Boys are the best for me! No doubt Beatles are great, but I'd buy a BB album over a Btl album any day. And I disagree when you say that the BB made some stinker albums. Granted, some were not as good as others, but most I appreciate after listening to at a later point in time. Anyway, please check out a video I made to a BB beauty here: vimeo . com/18417670. I couldn't download it to Youtube cleanly, as it only shows with great pixelation. Anyway, plse enjoy and pass on! Thanks!
I wonder what people would be saying here if SMiLE had come out when it was supposed to. I also wonder what would happen if people stopped for a second and realized that Sgt. Peppers is horribly overrated, that sales do not equal quality, and that Abbey Road is the best Beatles album and even Wild Honey beats it.
The Beach Boys have 4 number 1's. On the week of April 4th 1964, The Beatles held the top 5 positions of the Billboard 100. All together The Beatles have 27 number 1's. The Beach Boys being compared to The Beatles is laughable.
@AlexNTexas89 i believe the beatles were the better band, but lets face it, Brian Wilson alone was just as great a musician as Paul, John, and George Martin put together. Rubber Soul inspired Pet Sounds, but Pet Sounds just as quickly influenced Sgt. Pepper, Macca even said it was the Beatles' favorite album as they were recording Pepper. Influentially, both bands were excellent, but the Beatles were able to keep their success up longer.
@Javier23gol When people talk about the Beach Boys, Pet Sounds is the only album ever mentioned. Every Beatles album from Rubber Soul and on can stand up to Pet Sounds. Brian Wilson heard Strawberry Fields on the radio while driving in his car and had to pull over because he was so affected. He was so affected by that one song that he shelved Smile for 35 years and went into a mental breakdown. Looks like Brian took your advice and saw who was better =D
@AlexNTexas89 while I agree in part with what you say, I don´t think the amount of #1 hit any artist has says much about their quality (don´t misinterpret me). some crappy artist are very successful. To me the Beatles are the greatest band ever. I love them so much there is practically no song I dont like from them. in fact, Withing you without you is my all time favorite song, but I agree with this guy the beach boys don´t get the credit they deserve. pet sound is almost my favorite album ever.
@dekken231 Good job articulating the English Language like a total dumbass. You're a waste of sperm who wouldn't even begin to fathom the greatness of The Bealtes. Whether or not you were born stupid or it's a personal choice, your mom is probably highly disappointed in the piece of shit you turned about to be.
@AlexNTexas89 The Beach Boys also have more Top 40 hits than ANY other American band. Don't argue record sales, because the best-selling artists are ALWAYS the ones who come from across the pond. It's a popularity fest and should NEVER reflect the quality of the music made by any band.
@Beatles6919 Now hold on. At what point did I EVER say The Beach Boys were the best-SELLING American artist? Don't put words in my mouth because I will call you on it. The Beach Boys have more HITS, they are NOT the best-selling American artist.
The Beach Boys have more Top 40 hits than Chicago. My source? Billboard. I'll go with them since they're the ones that keep track of chart records.
@Mr11MUSICMAN Yep, pretty much you waste of sperm. Sounds like you have an inferiority complex and can’t handle the fact that The Beatles are superior to the Beach Boys in every musical way, including more number ones. Have a shitty life listening to your shitty music you mental midget.
@Mr11MUSICMAN Says the person who called me a fuckhead. I guess my comment about The Beatles being better and having more number 1's upset you and you had to resort to name calling because that's how unintelligent people (you) express themselves. You got upset because it's true and like I said you have a inferiority complex. You can count the number 1's The Beach Boys have and the number of Lance Armstrong's balls on one hand giving you a laughable grand total of 5.
I'm from California. My uncle, in 1962, saw the Beach Boys at his graduation party at Disneyland. California High Schools, not all of them, had a tradition of having the Grad Party at Disneyland and some still do to this day. I was raised listening to both the Beatles and Beach Boys. I don't consider the Beach Boys to be a "band" per se as it wsn't a truly collaborative effort for much of their famous material. It was mainly BW. The Beatles thrived on collaboration, sometimes more than less.
Murray Wilson= Sell-out Cocksucker, Rip-Off Artist , No-Talent Hack that lived vicariously through his son's fame. Should have had is eyes gouged out the day he sold the collection of songs out from under his own kids! Hey Brian, go take another hit buddy!
The Beach Boys are better than The beatles, Everybody said that The Beatles RockBand was the most stupid nusic game ever. Eve if you put the game in Expert was like medium. I would love to seee The Beach Boys Rockband...
@Zebadane Yep, you know what, where I live people doen't like rock but when i put the Beach Boys the give me their iPod to syncronize Beach Boys music. One day I put The Beatles music to a frien and he told to put The Beach Boys because their music was more fu ;)

i agree with you so much on the Today album..its insane...Please let me wonder kicks it off and you feel your jaw hitting the floor haha..and "she knows me too well"..those songs are my favorites on that album. beatles loved beach boys..paul later said that he cried in the car while hearing pet sounds on the way to meeting Brian Wilson( which is one of the best albums of all time..easily ) brian is just as good a songwriter as Paul mccartney and john lennon !!
@wendel88 thats ur opinion that he is.. but no one has written as many hit songs as lennon/mccartney.. nobody has written the quality and the quanity as them.. i know this is a beach boy love fest here but please.. not only the beatles stuff but their own material as solo artists.. i love brian and im a beach boy fan but..... but hey its your opinion..
I love both bands, but I think that what happened to the Beach Boys is: 1-They were pigeonholed in surf music, and when the scene changed, they became un-hip; 2-During the early era, they had to produce so many LPs, there was no way they could maintain a high standard of quality; 3-Brian Wilson left the band for long periods of time, and although the others produced some great music, they really felt his absence; 4-I agree they didn't know when to quit, (mid 70s would have been good).

Totally agree, some (I repeat 'SOME') Beatles fans think anything but The Beatles is 'terrible music'. Those people need to realise other people are allowed opinions. I appreciate The Beatles music, I don't think it's 'terrible', but I don't think its 'OUTSTANDING'. There were other AMAZING bands at that time. In my opinion The Beach Boys were better. Opinions. Accept them.
@LeviVendetta there are peoples opinions that rem, b52s are the greatest.. they are opinions.. cause u like the boys doesnt mean they are better, it means u like them more.. Beatles have outsold them, more #1 songs, more albums sold, more top 10 songs, etc etc... The Beatles had far better writers and more of them, bettter vocalists and i mean they could sing songs like revolution, come together, hard fast songs and sing love songs.. boys could not.. this is facts not opinion.. big difference
@Beatles6919 You do realise people have their own musical taste? I think The Beach Boys are better. I don't mean better as in 'more records sold', I mean I find them better because that's my taste and my opinion. You are practically saying no one is allowed to say The Beach Boys are better. You're biased because your favourite band is The Beatles. I'm allowed to think whatever I want. I appreciate The Beatles and the impact they had on music. But I prefer The Beach Boys. Opinions. Deal with it.
@LeviVendetta thats your opinion.. u deal with it.. i d ont care who u like.. ur biased because u love the beach boys.. u go by opinions i go by facts!! deal with it!!
@Beatles6919 Yes & I respect what you feel. But you're the one not respecting what other people feel and for your information I dont 'LOVE' them, but if you said "Who do you prefer?", i'd say them. To be honest you're pretty delusional if you think most things go by 'facts'. People are allowed to feel what ever they want. You telling me what to think DOES NOT EFFECT ME & MY OPINION. You're wasting your time telling people they're wrong on this video. Its not going to change what they think..
@LeviVendetta Hell yeah, man! As a fellow Boys fan, I'm sure you're used to people like this trying to tell you that your taste in music is wrong, as if such a thing were possible. It's too bad, because I like the Beatles, but when their fans start acting like this guy here it really turns me off to their music.
@DoGeeseSeeGod24 Tell me about it! I don't even hate The Beatles, I think they're an amazing band who did ALOT for music. But some of their fans think any band but The Beatles aren't worth listening too. I like a few of their songs but to me they're over-rated. People think i'm crazy saying that but that's just my taste and opinion. Thanks for understanding!
@LeviVendetta oh give me a break.. i love the beach boys too.. theres people that think b52s are the greatest too does it mean they are? no.. the beach boys are so boring the same sound, the same old sweet little dittys.. they are very boring.. good at what they did but boring.. surf, love, car songs, and animal songs.. really interesting stuff.. they couldnt move with the times so they after 66 they had no career other than singing oldies.. this is just my opinion though..lmao
The Beach Boys went back to singing oldies after 66? lol...
For someone so concerned with facts, you should really get yours straight. Go listen to Pet Sounds, Smile, Smiley Smile, Wild Honey, Friends, 20/20, Sunflower, Surf's Up, Carl And The Passions, and Holland. Those albums came out between 66 and 73. They sound very different from each other, and on those ten albums, there is one song about surfing. Even Surf's Up has nothing to do with surfing.
@LeviVendetta Yeah man, I like the Beatles, overrated though they may be. So many of their songs are great. But when I run into people who try to tell me that the Beatles were the best band ever like it's some sort of undeniable fact, it just really gets to me. This guy says that they returned to singing oldies after 66, so he obviously doesn't know about all the great music they made between 66 and 73, which had nothing to do with surfing or cars. He probably doesn't even know what Smile is.
@DoGeeseSeeGod24 let me repeat this once more abba has NOT sold more albums then the Beatles.. heres some more facts for you..
smiley smile charted 41..
wild honey charted 24..
friends charted 126...
20/20 charted 68
sunflower charted 151
surfs up charted 29
carl and the passions charted 50
holland charted 36 and only this one made it to silver.. no gold no platinum.. may i ask what it takes to make it gold or platinum? people buying it.. y wasnt they buying it? because it was garbage.. FACTS!!
@Beatles6919 Have you ever heard those albums? Do you possess the mental capacity to actually decide for yourself is music is good or not? Or do you have to run off to Wikipedia to see how it sold before you can determine if it's good or not? Music can sell poorly and still sell well. Sales and quality are not the same thing. Just because the Beatles sold better than the Boys does not make their music better. It just makes them more successful. Those are not the same thing. Get that in your head
@DoGeeseSeeGod24 album sales do matter and does reflect if its good or not.. history has spoken dude,, because u love your boys doesnt mean they r better.. i have facts to back me up and not some biased love affair for a group.. i do like the beach boys but i also have enough sense to realize who had more talent and who had a better career and which group had the talent to go out on their own and make it.. Beatles did!! Get that in your head!!
@Beatles6919 You are presenting me with facts, but those facts are meaningless in this conversation. You cannot say that any one band is better than any other as if it's an objective thing. I have not said to you once that the Boys are better, so I don't know why you think that I did. Each individual person can think any band is better than any other, but you cannot say that any band is definitively better than any other. And by the way, listen to those albums before you judge the Boys.
@DoGeeseSeeGod24 i have listened to them and that is Y im writing responding on here.. they are meaningless because they dont support your love fest for the boys.. i wont post anymore on here.. like i said i like the beach boys and i own alot of their stuff.. What the Beatles did in just a short time and the way their music has lasted and so many rock musicians respect what they have done speaks volumes.. i realize on here whoever the persons favorite band is they are the best..
@DoGeeseSeeGod24 i like the Beach boys they were sweet a little band.. very cuddly.. none of you boy lovers want to count facts, hits, #1 songs, #1 albums etc etc.. why? it doesnt support your argument.. it does matter.. people think rem is the greatest.. why? cause thats their favorite band.. being ur favorite doesnt mean they are the best but when u back it up with facts u cant deny it.. i know this is a love fest for the boys but i would rank them about 80th.. my opinion.. respect it
@Beatles6919 #1 hits don't make a band "better" than another band. It makes them more successful, but it doesn't make them better. Being better is entirely subjective - there's no way facts can make any band better than any other. Abba sold more albums than the Beatles did. That's a fact. By your logic that makes Abba better than the Beatles, and I'm guessing you wouldn't agree with that. I respect your opinion, but that's all it is. Your opinion is NOT a fact.
@DoGeeseSeeGod24 abba has not sold more albums than the Beatles.. get your facts straight.. what is a FACT is that the Beatles have sold more albums, more #1 songs, most #1 albums.. these are FACTS!! NOT OPINIONS!! NOT BIASED OPINIONS EITHER!! Could any of the beach boys make it on their own? could all of them write and play instruments and have successful careers? What made the Beatles successful was the fact they had talent not because they were some fad..
@DoGeeseSeeGod24 and i say one more time abba has not sold more albums than the Beatles.. There is Beatles and there is Elvis.. sorry dude.. get your facts straight!!! history has spoken.. The Beatles did more in just 7 years then any band has done their lifetime.. That is a Fact!!! bye for now
@Beatles6919 You really are a fucking spastic. I love The Beatles but sales have nothing to do with the quality of the music. Fucking retarded fanboy.
@maxrobotube rubber soul then pet sounds then revolver then sgt pepper, then white album, abbey road, let it be.. game over.. could the beach boys ever sing revolution or helter skelter? they had a certain style and that was it and they didnt have the talent to carry on.. u cant even compare the two groups..
the Beach Boys did a much more bigger job, there music is more difficult to sing/perform. There harmonies/voices are better than the beatles. But the Beatles are very good to. But i prefer the beach boys. The arrangement of there songs are incredible. The songs of the beatles are easier.

@sunrise4783 the Beatles stuff rubber soul and revolver was complicated.. try singing tomorrow never knows or them using backward guitars(which they were the first to do so.. ill take rubber soul, revolver, sgt pepper, white album, let it be, abbey road over anything the boys have..
@sunrise4783 did the beach boys sing anything like revolution or helter skelter? there style of singing was the same.. they could not sing fast hard songs.. if u say they could then you are dreaming.. what did the boys do after 66? what did they do in the 70s? this is not even a fair fight. groups like the Beatles, stones could adapt. boys could not.. just a fact not a opinion.. i realize this is a boy love fest on here so i would nt expect anything more..
@sunrise4783 The Beatles had better quality too.. They wrote stuff like this boy, in my life, here there everywhere, if i fell, and i love her, yesterday and then they could write harder stuff like yer blues, helter skelter, revolution, come together, ive got a feeling.. their music changed with the times, this is why the beach girls faded away. please tell me what they did after 66.. The people have spoken with album sales, #1 songs, #1 albums, top 10 songs,, these are facts..
AndyPliskin. Overall, you were pretty well on the mark. The only misinformation was the quoting of Paul on his favorite song of all time. The correct quote would to use God Only Knows in the context you intended. I believe, collectively, the Beatles were a better band, however, and not a slight one, is my belief that Brian Wilson trumped all the Beatles including George Martin in the whole picture - his creative genius would be hard to top.
Read the book 'Catch a wave'. a Brian Wilson Bio. Its great. Also read Here, there, and everywhere, the best book about the beatles around from a credible source, their long time recording engineer. Great video andrew. Your depth of historical understanding and passion for both of these bands is right on, well said man.
I can admit that the Beatles are the better band, if for no other reason than, like you said, they knew when to quit. Nothing Kokomo-esque ever came from them. However, when I'm listening to music, I find myself listening to the Beach Boys much more often. I'd say that all of their albums from 1966-1971 are on par with Beatles albums from the same time period, and Smile (surprised you didn't mention that one) is better than any Beatles album.
@DoGeeseSeeGod24 the boys had one style.. they did not have the vocal range to sing helter skelter, yer blues, revolution, come together and then turn around and sing something like here there everywhere.. Beatles had alot more overall talent.. Take their solo career.. could any of the boys have the career that the Beatles had solo wise(3 members in the hall of fame) mccartney in the guiness book of world record for being the most prolific songwriter ever.. Beatles 20 #1 songs in 7 years..
@Beatles6919 Hehe, if you think the Beach Boys only have one style, you haven't listened to them very much. Some of Dennis's songs are just as hard rocking as the Beatles' hardest stuff, and of course their ballads are easily on the level of Here, There, and Everywhere. As far as solo careers go, I'd say that other than George, their solo careers were pretty disappointing. And as for the Guinness Book and #1 hits, popularity does not indicate talent.
@DoGeeseSeeGod24 if you think dennis wilson had a good voice man r u crazy.. could any of the boys go solo? lMAO.. could any of them write imagine, band on the run, give me love, it dont come easy, maybe im amazed.. face they could not keep up with the beatles..
@DoGeeseSeeGod24 not only were they popular they HAD talent.. when u have been popular for over 45 years, well thats more then just being popular.. new kids on the block, nsync, etc etc were popular but do u really think they will be remembered like the Beatles? u see the difference? Mccartney is in the guiness book of world records for being the most prolific songwriter ever!! not opinion just the facts.. you think the boys had respect for the Beatles? Beatles blew em away.. no contest!! sorry
@Beatles6919 Do not try to pass off your opinions as facts. Do not try to tell me that my opinion is wrong. I don't get people like you. Why can't you just listen to the Beatles and enjoy them? Why do you have to try to convince me to listen to them too. It's because of people like you that so many people think Beatles fans are ignorant pricks.
And by the way, Maybe I'm Amazed is a fucking shitty song. And Dennis Wilson had a better voice than John Lennon ever did.
@DoGeeseSeeGod24 listen dumbass im not trying to convince u of anything.. i cant have my opinion? when u say maybe im amazed is a shitty song then i know your full of shit and if u think dennis wilson has a better voice then lennon i know ur full of shit.. none of them could fucking do anything but sing sweet melodies. this is y after 66 they sucked. in the 70s they were no more then a backing group to Chicago.. could dennis ever write a song like imagine? no. but he loved him some manson..
Today was actually before Summer Days/Nights both in 1965. You may have been thinking of All Summer Long which was released in 1964, the last album they released before Brian quit touring to spend more time in the studio.
I remember laughing when I saw that my older brother had a Beach Boys CD. I was surprised when he defended them. That was years ago, and only recently I found out what I've been missing. Let me just say, I've never felt this way about music before in my life.
Hi Andy...thanks for the vid....by the way..around 2:16 you mention that a lot of what the Beach Boys wrote was crap and then you reference Barbara Ann...if you are implying that they wrote it, they didnt, they merely covered it....and yep I bet they got tired of that song pretty quick.
You again, you haven't already figured out The Beach Boys are better yet? shame on you! When The Beach Boys made so complex and heavenly music as possible The Beatles were trying to get their guitars sound right!
@M3town3 The Beatles had no competition.. sweet little beach boy music couldnt go with the times.. Beatles went from i want to hold you hand to revolution in 4 years.. boys just sang the same ole sweet little tunes.. 70;s just them going around singing the oldies.. when george harrison is the 3rd best in a group its pretty awesome.. lennon with imagine, paul with maybe im amazed, harrison with give me love, ringo with it dont come easy.. what did the boys do? its not even fair
@Beatles6919 I'm not disagreeing with that the Beatles ain't no traditional band. And with their solo careers, it's kinda' intresting because i like the music of George best, but only the backround music. John and Paul was way better singers than either George or Ringo. I guess it's because Spector worked harder on Georges album more even tough it's a triple album, but of Course I like John's early albums more. As for the Beach Boys, maybe they weren't as talented as people say but Spector...
After reading some more comments, it became obvious to me that Beatles6919 doesn't have anything better to do than post insanely stupid comments on this site. Why don't you get a life, Beatle Boy. It just might improve your personality!
To Beatles 6919: Don't make stupid comments. They just glamorize your ignorance! Brian Wilson in his heyday DID have a 4 octave range, and he and ALL of the Beach Boys could out-sing any of the Beatles. Get your facts straight, ass wipe!
@409442 hey punk.. could brian ev er sing helter skelter or a rock song period? fuck no he couldnt.. could he sing revolution? fuck no he couldnt.. could he sing little sweet songs.. yes he could.. could any of beach boys make it on their own? fuck no.. y? because they had no fucking talent u dumbass.. Beatles in 7 years fucking kicked their ass.. how many hits did boys have? u fucking loser
@Beatles6919 I noticed 1st of all that you said "Fuck" seven times in your reply. ... Now, tell me truthfully,..... who's the REAL loser? Aside from that, I happen to like both the Beach Boys and the Beatles. I'm 60 now, so I lived through the good times with both bands. If you're 41, you don't even have a clue what it was really like. Go talk to your Dad!
@409442 stupid comments? Beatles 20 #1 songs. boys 4.. most albums sold, most # 1 albums, most top 10 songs, 3 members in the hall of fame as solo artists.. i could go on for fucking weeks but i wont.. go listen to your sweet little pet sounds you fucking gay boy..
the beatles and beach boys were competeing for songs thats the only way you can compare them brian wilson even knew that the beatles were better after listening to sgt peppers lonley hearts club band made brian wilson have a nervous break down and he knew he could not compete with the beatles
what do you base this on? opinion? sales? #1 songs? #1 albums? please explain.. compare beach boys to chicago.. eagles have sold more albums then ANY american band.
totally agree with what you said. Here today was the start of something great for Brian and then Pst Sounds (my fav record of all time) has the most breautiful music and the voice of Carl on God Only Knows sounds so angelic.
To mee Pet Sounds has and still is so underated. Brian wrote from the heart on this album. Great Job
ofcourse they were both good - but different - beach boys were more jazzy influenced, more innovative in terms of (vocal)arrangments, cords changes, and productionwise . It was with Sgt. Pepper that the beatles surpassed with of course the great G. Martin. Bian Wilson did not get the support (also from the other Boys) to persue his innovative work, as they were victim of their own succes : the "large" public could not handle the new work, and knows even up today,
in the sixties living in holland, kids always talked about , beatles and stones. in '66 when I heard the Beach Boys at ten, you could, (and still) carry me away.
Between the 2 bands, no use arguing about quality - it is a matter of heart.
The Beatles were the greatest and most important band ever?- because they were more populair, sold more records? Up to today? It is a commercial machine. And Yes, The work of Brian deserves more aknowlegment, and The Beach Boys were a family.
a commercial machine doesnt last 46 years.. new kids on the block were a commercial machine. big difference.. the beatles had talent.. beach boys had one style and that was it. this is why they couldnt make it in the late 60s and 70s.
Yes, the Beatles were the greatest and most important band ever. Still, the Beach Boys were unrivaled for touching your heart and soul. Plus, the Beatles had the incredible George Martin handling the arrangements and production. The Beach Boys were essentially a one man show. Also due to inner turmoil and lame record company promotion, their later excellent works were largely ignored. Martin himself had stated that he was astounded as to what everything Brian Wilson accomplished.
That is why I call Pet Sounds a solo album. As for arrangements if you mean string arrangements Paul McCartney partnered with George Martin. The Beatles did have a lot of input on the mono recordings and Paul and George were recording other people by Pepper. So no they were not novices.
The Beatles release Rubber Soul and then Brian Wilson releases Pet Sounds and unfortunately loses it when the Beatles release "Strawberry Fields Forever". The Beach Boys released only one album that would be compared to the Beatles. Nothing wrong with that becaue poor Brian Wilson did not have a Lennon, McCartney and a Harrison.
The Beach Boys revolutionized recording with Good Vibrations. Don't fucking disrespect Good Vibrations.
The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys...they're all equal and good in so many ways. You can't smash them up and contrast them. They all stand on their own.
no there not equal.. whos disrespecting good vibrations? beatles could do things that the boys could never do. sing helter skelter and also have the pipes to sing this boy, in my life, here there and everywhere. beach boys had the same sound on everything. could the beach girls make it on there own? NO
And enough of the "can the beach boys do revolution and Helter skelter. Whats the point? You would always say the original is better. And regardless why should they? The bands are totally different. Instead, lets celebrate the differences, which i think was the point of this video, and you missed it.
u know as well as i do that the beach girls could not sing helter skelter or revolution. they did not have the voices to sings it. i didnt miss anything. just look at today with the Beatles once again dominating.. nobody can match lennon mccartney. you can put any little spin you want on it.. 9-9-09 the Beatles once again.. lmao.... go buy your Beatle cds... there selling fast...lol
Im a pretty huge beatles fan, prolly a wee bit more so than brian wilson, but still it seems like your not reading into any of the previous comments. Here,I can do the same thing as you.u know as well as i do that the beatgirls could not sing warmth of the sun or caroline, no.they did not have the voices to sings it.Sure, there were some aspects in Lennon/McCartney that were unbeatable, but I'd say the same thing for Brian Wilson. I wonder if you ever listened to their other songs, not just the hits
listen to mccartney sing here there everywhere and i love her and then he sings helter skelter. beach boys had one style and thats it. lennon sings in my life and then sing something like revolution. could mike love do this or anyone on the boys? NO. could any of the boys go solo and make have a career? NO
if i want variety i will listen to rubber soul, revolver, sgt peppers, white album, abbey road and let it be.. Beatles cannot be touched.. this past week the Beatles sold 636,000 albums. to this day there still relevant.
In all honesty the most important song that came out at that time if you look back is "Tomorrow Never Knows" which is proto so many things. I heard the track had an impact on Brian Wilson when he heard it.
I like the beatles and the beachboys , my favorite band is the beatles, objectively speaking the beatles blow away the beachboys in terms of importance, However honestly, Brian could outsing both John and Paul anyday of the week, HE had 4 octaves to his voice, Im not sure if Paul even had 3 .
no he did not have a 4 octave. how silly. he did not have the range or lennon or mccartney. do you honestly think wilson could sing revolution or helter skelter? no he couldnt. paul could sing here there and everywhere and then sing helter skelter. lennon could sing in my life and something like yer blues. wilson had the same vocals throughout.
Wilson had 4 octaves he was able to sing those high ass notes without going into falsetto, and lennon was not a good singer at all , he was nasal singer like Diana Ross, dude I love the beatles more than the beachboys by a mile , but Brian could outsing both Macca and Lennon
please show me where brian had a 4 octave. freddy mercury didnt even have that.. could brian sing helter skelter and revolution? fuck no he couldnt.. why? because he did not have the range of mccartney or lennon. brian had a certain range he could sing very well. lennon was not a good singer..lol.. to this day can wilson sing with mac? no!! i would love to hear brian try to sing helter skelter.. lmao!! listen to yer blues on here and tell me lennon is a bad singer.. dumbass!!
It's good that someone of youth can look at this topic with some objectivity. I am a child of the 60s, growing up with both groups. I asked the questions in the 60s that you ask today. I still do. I have said all along the Beatles were the right band, for the right place and right time. America was ready to rebel. Their "long" hair, cool music struck a whole generation at a unique time...hence Beatle Mania...which is what it was..."mania". Better than the BBs? No way.
brian wilson could not keep up with lennon/mccartney. the Beatles did more in 7 years then the boys have done there whole career. i wont even count there solo work. thats not fair..
having a #20 album in the uk means having a career? lol everybody has had a career then.. ringo starr had a better solo career then any beach boy. what does that tell you? ringos first 7 songs he released were top 10 songs with two of them being #1 songs. george harrison 3 #1 songs and countless top 10 htis, lennon 3 #1 songs plus he co wrote fame with bowie which was a #1 song, mccartney 9 #1 songs and is in the guiness book of world records for being the most prolific. this is having a career.
who did? the eagles, zeppelin, chicago, lyrnyrd skyrnyd, pink floyd. etc etc etc.. yes i have heard dennis wilson sing you are so beautiful and it sucked. the went around in the 70s singing with chicago.. wow.. how many hit songs did the boys have after 66? how many #1 songs? 1 kokomo.. like i said the beatles did more in 7 years then the boys did in there whole career. band on the run, all things must pass and imagine cant be touched by anything the boys did on t here own.

Mr11MUSICMAN 1 month ago
both are great bands, but I really like the beach boys.

Anyway great vid and I enjoed your opinions!

to me is just plain wrong because Sgt.Pepper was a great well orchestrated and somewhat more diversified album compared to Pet Sounds...so having said the way i describe the Beatles and the Beachboys is like comparing a Supermarket to a store
xtremerockomaniac 5 months ago
I think that the Beachboys were incredible geniuses specially Brian Wilson who made innovative sounds like Pet sounds and Good Vibrations and a few of (with a help from Dennis sugestion) surfin music...i think that Pet Sounds was a very decent album but in my heart with all due respect (and believe me that i've learned to respect alot the BB to a point that their surfing image could've been the reason for little lack of credibility) But to say that Pet Sounds is at the same level as Sgt.Pepper
xtremerockomaniac 5 months ago
The Beach Boys are undoubtedly a great band, one of the very few bands that can even be compared to The Beatles. I think there is a general consensus that The Beatles are the better band, but the Beach Boys still stand out as one of those great bands that survived the transition from early rock n roll to the more psychedelic late 1960's. The only others that could do this and maintain success were The Beatles and Bob Dylan, which is some pretty nice company if you ask me.
MarcoNard19 5 months ago
honestly you people are kind of pathetic the way you argue with such pretentiousness over which rock band was better and who had more number 1's and all of that shit. so much shit coming out of your mouths. just listen to the goddamn songs and whichever ones you like more listen to those more often. it's really not such a big fucking deal. there's a whole world going on while you argue about the beatles vs. the beach boys.

As an American guitar player, The Beach Boys were more influential to me. I guess you can say they were our version of The Beatles!

When it came down to compositions I think Wilson had the edge compared to Lennon/McCartney basiclly because of the Beatles having Sir George Martin produce most of their songs. Overall the more talented band I would say was the Beatles because of thier vast amount of songs to choose to put on an album. I think many people like to compare the songwritersof the two bands and Wilson did not just write every song but also composed using harmonies unheard of at the time for every member.
brian19831 9 months ago
@brian19831 how many songs did martin write? the thing with the beatles. paul of john could sing any type of song.. paul yesterday to helter skelter or lennon in my life to revolution.. the beach boys could never sing rock songs cause they didnt have that style of voice.. the same old stuff all the time.. they could NOT change with the times therefore they faded away.. the Beatles stayed ahead of the music.. and also the Beatles could make it on their own. boys could not.. Y? talent..

Good argument, although one thing I'd like to point out:
"Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!)" actually came out AFTER "Today!", but they both came out in 1965.

One thing I learned from Full Sail University is that if you ever wanna go into the Recording music today, Petsounds and Revolver are the two albums that you are required to listen too and study.
DunstinChecksIn 9 months ago
The main difference between this 2 great groups is that The Beatles had 2 genius (Lennon/McCarney) while the Beach Boys only had one (Brian Wilson). The Beach Boys are my favourite band :) but to be honest, The Beatles have a lot of more good songs than the Beach Boys (as I said, cos Beatles had 2 genius).
For me 'I get around' is the best song ever, and other songs like 'God only knows' or 'Wouldn't it be nice' are better than 'Yesterday' or 'Hey Jude'.
jesusmarrone 11 months ago

AlexNTexas89 1 year ago
@AlexNTexas89 i believe the beatles were the better band, but lets face it, Brian Wilson alone was just as great a musician as Paul, John, and George Martin put together. Rubber Soul inspired Pet Sounds, but Pet Sounds just as quickly influenced Sgt. Pepper, Macca even said it was the Beatles' favorite album as they were recording Pepper. Influentially, both bands were excellent, but the Beatles were able to keep their success up longer.

@AlexNTexas89 Who cares about the charts, The Beach Boys music has a lot of soul in it. Hear and analize Pet Sounds and you will see who's better ;)
Javier23gol 10 months ago

@AlexNTexas89 The Beach Boys also have more Top 40 hits than ANY other American band. Don't argue record sales, because the best-selling artists are ALWAYS the ones who come from across the pond. It's a popularity fest and should NEVER reflect the quality of the music made by any band.
RazrHack 6 months ago
@RazrHack actually chicago has more top 40 hits .. eagles have sold more albums then any american band.. sorry

The Beach Boys have more Top 40 hits than Chicago. My source? Billboard. I'll go with them since they're the ones that keep track of chart records.

The Beatles had far better writers and more of them, bettter vocalists and i mean they could sing songs like revolution, come together, hard fast songs and sing love songs.. boys could not.. this is facts not opinion.. big difference
Beatles6919 1 year ago
@Beatles6919 You do realise people have their own musical taste? I think The Beach Boys are better. I don't mean better as in 'more records sold', I mean I find them better because that's my taste and my opinion. You are practically saying no one is allowed to say The Beach Boys are better. You're biased because your favourite band is The Beatles. I'm allowed to think whatever I want. I appreciate The Beatles and the impact they had on music. But I prefer The Beach Boys. Opinions. Deal with it.

Beatles6919 1 year ago
The Beach Boys went back to singing oldies after 66? lol...
For someone so concerned with facts, you should really get yours straight. Go listen to Pet Sounds, Smile, Smiley Smile, Wild Honey, Friends, 20/20, Sunflower, Surf's Up, Carl And The Passions, and Holland. Those albums came out between 66 and 73. They sound very different from each other, and on those ten albums, there is one song about surfing. Even Surf's Up has nothing to do with surfing.
DoGeeseSeeGod24 1 year ago
@LeviVendetta Yeah man, I like the Beatles, overrated though they may be. So many of their songs are great. But when I run into people who try to tell me that the Beatles were the best band ever like it's some sort of undeniable fact, it just really gets to me. This guy says that they returned to singing oldies after 66, so he obviously doesn't know about all the great music they made between 66 and 73, which had nothing to do with surfing or cars. He probably doesn't even know what Smile is.

DoGeeseSeeGod24 1 year ago
@DoGeeseSeeGod24 album sales do matter and does reflect if its good or not.. history has spoken dude,, because u love your boys doesnt mean they r better.. i have facts to back me up and not some biased love affair for a group.. i do like the beach boys but i also have enough sense to realize who had more talent and who had a better career and which group had the talent to go out on their own and make it.. Beatles did!! Get that in your head!!
Beatles6919 1 year ago
@Beatles6919 You are presenting me with facts, but those facts are meaningless in this conversation. You cannot say that any one band is better than any other as if it's an objective thing. I have not said to you once that the Boys are better, so I don't know why you think that I did. Each individual person can think any band is better than any other, but you cannot say that any band is definitively better than any other. And by the way, listen to those albums before you judge the Boys.
DoGeeseSeeGod24 1 year ago
@DoGeeseSeeGod24 i have listened to them and that is Y im writing responding on here.. they are meaningless because they dont support your love fest for the boys.. i wont post anymore on here.. like i said i like the beach boys and i own alot of their stuff.. What the Beatles did in just a short time and the way their music has lasted and so many rock musicians respect what they have done speaks volumes.. i realize on here whoever the persons favorite band is they are the best..
Beatles6919 1 year ago
@DoGeeseSeeGod24 i like the Beach boys they were sweet a little band.. very cuddly.. none of you boy lovers want to count facts, hits, #1 songs, #1 albums etc etc.. why? it doesnt support your argument.. it does matter.. people think rem is the greatest.. why? cause thats their favorite band.. being ur favorite doesnt mean they are the best but when u back it up with facts u cant deny it.. i know this is a love fest for the boys but i would rank them about 80th.. my opinion.. respect it
Beatles6919 1 year ago
@Beatles6919 #1 hits don't make a band "better" than another band. It makes them more successful, but it doesn't make them better. Being better is entirely subjective - there's no way facts can make any band better than any other. Abba sold more albums than the Beatles did. That's a fact. By your logic that makes Abba better than the Beatles, and I'm guessing you wouldn't agree with that. I respect your opinion, but that's all it is. Your opinion is NOT a fact.
DoGeeseSeeGod24 1 year ago
@DoGeeseSeeGod24 abba has not sold more albums than the Beatles.. get your facts straight.. what is a FACT is that the Beatles have sold more albums, more #1 songs, most #1 albums.. these are FACTS!! NOT OPINIONS!! NOT BIASED OPINIONS EITHER!! Could any of the beach boys make it on their own? could all of them write and play instruments and have successful careers? What made the Beatles successful was the fact they had talent not because they were some fad..

the Beach Boys did a much more bigger job, there music is more difficult to sing/perform. There harmonies/voices are better than the beatles. But the Beatles are very good to. But i prefer the beach boys. The arrangement of there songs are incredible. The songs of the beatles are easier.

@sunrise4783 the Beatles stuff rubber soul and revolver was complicated.. try singing tomorrow never knows or them using backward guitars(which they were the first to do so.. ill take rubber soul, revolver, sgt pepper, white album, let it be, abbey road over anything the boys have..

that's not true! you said the beatles sold more albums etc, that's right. but say this anthing about the quality of the music???? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's also false that they had only one style. You are not neutral!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sunrise4783 1 year ago
@sunrise4783 did the beach boys sing anything like revolution or helter skelter? there style of singing was the same.. they could not sing fast hard songs.. if u say they could then you are dreaming.. what did the boys do after 66? what did they do in the 70s? this is not even a fair fight. groups like the Beatles, stones could adapt. boys could not.. just a fact not a opinion.. i realize this is a boy love fest on here so i would nt expect anything more..
Beatles6919 1 year ago
@sunrise4783 The Beatles had better quality too.. They wrote stuff like this boy, in my life, here there everywhere, if i fell, and i love her, yesterday and then they could write harder stuff like yer blues, helter skelter, revolution, come together, ive got a feeling.. their music changed with the times, this is why the beach girls faded away. please tell me what they did after 66.. The people have spoken with album sales, #1 songs, #1 albums, top 10 songs,, these are facts..

TheWallOfSound1990 1 year ago
AndyPliskin. Overall, you were pretty well on the mark. The only misinformation was the quoting of Paul on his favorite song of all time. The correct quote would to use God Only Knows in the context you intended. I believe, collectively, the Beatles were a better band, however, and not a slight one, is my belief that Brian Wilson trumped all the Beatles including George Martin in the whole picture - his creative genius would be hard to top.
pmoyer50 1 year ago
Read the book 'Catch a wave'. a Brian Wilson Bio. Its great. Also read Here, there, and everywhere, the best book about the beatles around from a credible source, their long time recording engineer. Great video andrew. Your depth of historical understanding and passion for both of these bands is right on, well said man.
mifflinfinity 1 year ago
I can admit that the Beatles are the better band, if for no other reason than, like you said, they knew when to quit. Nothing Kokomo-esque ever came from them. However, when I'm listening to music, I find myself listening to the Beach Boys much more often. I'd say that all of their albums from 1966-1971 are on par with Beatles albums from the same time period, and Smile (surprised you didn't mention that one) is better than any Beatles album.
DoGeeseSeeGod24 1 year ago
@DoGeeseSeeGod24 the boys had one style.. they did not have the vocal range to sing helter skelter, yer blues, revolution, come together and then turn around and sing something like here there everywhere.. Beatles had alot more overall talent.. Take their solo career.. could any of the boys have the career that the Beatles had solo wise(3 members in the hall of fame) mccartney in the guiness book of world record for being the most prolific songwriter ever.. Beatles 20 #1 songs in 7 years..
Beatles6919 1 year ago
@Beatles6919 Hehe, if you think the Beach Boys only have one style, you haven't listened to them very much. Some of Dennis's songs are just as hard rocking as the Beatles' hardest stuff, and of course their ballads are easily on the level of Here, There, and Everywhere. As far as solo careers go, I'd say that other than George, their solo careers were pretty disappointing. And as for the Guinness Book and #1 hits, popularity does not indicate talent.

Beatles6919 1 year ago
@Beatles6919 I'm not disagreeing with that the Beatles ain't no traditional band. And with their solo careers, it's kinda' intresting because i like the music of George best, but only the backround music. John and Paul was way better singers than either George or Ringo. I guess it's because Spector worked harder on Georges album more even tough it's a triple album, but of Course I like John's early albums more. As for the Beach Boys, maybe they weren't as talented as people say but Spector...

To Beatles 6919: Don't make stupid comments. They just glamorize your ignorance! Brian Wilson in his heyday DID have a 4 octave range, and he and ALL of the Beach Boys could out-sing any of the Beatles. Get your facts straight, ass wipe!

totally agree with what you said.

Martin. Bian Wilson did not get the support (also from the other Boys) to persue his innovative work, as they were victim of their own succes : the "large" public could not handle the new work, and knows even up today,
only the wellknown "hits" ....

in the sixties living in holland, kids always talked about , beatles and stones. in '66 when I heard the Beach Boys at ten, you could, (and still) carry me away.

Martin himself had stated that he was astounded as to what everything Brian Wilson accomplished.
westentrance 2 years ago
That is why I call Pet Sounds a solo album. As for arrangements if you mean string arrangements Paul McCartney partnered with George Martin. The Beatles did have a lot of input on the mono recordings and Paul and George were recording other people by Pepper. So no they were not novices.
Matildamothers 2 years ago
The Beatles release Rubber Soul and then Brian Wilson releases Pet Sounds and unfortunately loses it when the Beatles release "Strawberry Fields Forever". The Beach Boys released only one album that would be compared to the Beatles. Nothing wrong with that becaue poor Brian Wilson did not have a Lennon, McCartney and a Harrison.
Matildamothers 2 years ago
I refuse to argue with you. You can't even use proper grammar and spelling.

The Beach Boys revolutionized recording with Good Vibrations. Don't fucking disrespect Good Vibrations.
The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys...they're all equal and good in so many ways. You can't smash them up and contrast them. They all stand on their own.
And I really like Barbra Ann. I guess I'm weird.
gidget144 2 years ago
no there not equal.. whos disrespecting good vibrations? beatles could do things that the boys could never do. sing helter skelter and also have the pipes to sing this boy, in my life, here there and everywhere. beach boys had the same sound on everything. could the beach girls make it on there own? NO
Beatles6919 2 years ago
And enough of the "can the beach boys do revolution and Helter skelter. Whats the point? You would always say the original is better. And regardless why should they? The bands are totally different. Instead, lets celebrate the differences, which i think was the point of this video, and you missed it.
Qmanklozmo 2 years ago
u know as well as i do that the beach girls could not sing helter skelter or revolution. they did not have the voices to sings it. i didnt miss anything. just look at today with the Beatles once again dominating.. nobody can match lennon mccartney. you can put any little spin you want on it..

Qmanklozmo 2 years ago
listen to mccartney sing here there everywhere and i love her and then he sings helter skelter. beach boys had one style and thats it. lennon sings in my life and then sing something like revolution. could mike love do this or anyone on the boys? NO. could any of the boys go solo and make have a career? NO

In all honesty the most important song that came out at that time if you look back is "Tomorrow Never Knows" which is proto so many things. I heard the track had an impact on Brian Wilson when he heard it.

Brian Wilson could. John and Paul needed each other but Brian did EV'RYTHIN ON HIS OWN BASTARDNESS KILL! I SAID KILL!

I like the beatles and the beachboys , my favorite band is the beatles, objectively speaking the beatles blow away the beachboys in terms of importance, However honestly, Brian could outsing both John and Paul anyday of the week, HE had 4 octaves to his voice, Im not sure if Paul even had 3 .
samtotheg 2 years ago
no he did not have a 4 octave. how silly. he did not have the range or lennon or mccartney. do you honestly think wilson could sing revolution or helter skelter? no he couldnt. paul could sing here there and everywhere and then sing helter skelter. lennon could sing in my life and something like yer blues. wilson had the same vocals throughout.
Beatles6919 2 years ago
Wilson had 4 octaves he was able to sing those high ass notes without going into falsetto, and lennon was not a good singer at all , he was nasal singer like Diana Ross, dude I love the beatles more than the beachboys by a mile , but Brian could outsing both Macca and Lennon
samtotheg 2 years ago
please show me where brian had a 4 octave. freddy mercury didnt even have that.. could brian sing helter skelter and revolution? fuck no he couldnt.. why? because he did not have the range of mccartney or lennon. brian had a certain range he could sing very well. lennon was not a good singer..lol.. to this day can wilson sing with mac? no!! i would love to hear brian try to sing helter skelter.. lmao!! listen to yer blues on here and tell me lennon is a bad singer.. dumbass!!
Beatles6919 2 years ago
It's good that someone of youth can look at this topic with some objectivity. I am a child of the 60s, growing up with both groups. I asked the questions in the 60s that you ask today. I still do. I have said all along the Beatles were the right band, for the right place and right time. America was ready to rebel. Their "long" hair, cool music struck a whole generation at a unique time...hence Beatle Mania...which is what it was..."mania". Better than the BBs? No way.
